Donna Strickland
BELLE PLAINE - Donna Strickland, 69, of Belle Plaine, died March 9, 2001, in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Rev. Andy Torres will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Strickland was born Nov. 4, 1931, in Ness City, to Lillie Mae (Hawk) and Elza Abijah Gandy.
She was self-employed as a seamstress and day care provider and had been a Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include four sons, Dean Bryant, Wellington, Jeff Bryant, Udall, Randy Strickland, Wellington, and Tim Strickland, Cunningham; four daughters, Brenda Nice, Pratt, Cheryl Strickland, Mexico, Martha Wedd, Winfield, and Tammy Moore, Benton; two brothers, Kenny Gandy, Wellington, and Tom Gandy, Wichita; three sisters, Nyta Wilkinson, Wellington, Eileen Herman, Wichita, and Lillian Williams, Clearwater; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Amanda Young
ALTAMONT, Tenn. - Amanda M. Young, 16, of Altamont, died March 10, 2001, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Services were to be at 2 p.m. today at Layne Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial was in Walker Cemetery.
Amanda was born April 27, 1984, to Brenda (Venn) and William Lee Young. She was a student at Grundy County High School, a member of 4-H and studying cosmetology.
Survivors include her father, William Lee Young, Altamont; her mother and stepfather, Brenda and Ray Blankenship, Sylacauga, Ala.; a brother, Adam Lee Young, a half-brother, Austin Blankenship, and a half-sister, Autumn Blankenship, all of Sylacauga, Ala.; her grandparents, Glenna and Harvey Venn, rural Cambridge, Beth Venn, Sylacauga, Ala., Dwight and Faye Walker, Altamont, and Calvin Young, Shady Grove, Ala; and her great-grandfather, Leonard Dobson, Alexander City, Ala.
Lois Dimit
Lois Olive Dimit, 93, longtime resident of Winfield, died March 11, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday.
Dimit was born Aug. 12, 1907, in Jerry City, Ohio, to Deborah (Tyson) and Thomas Alva Kelly. The family moved from Ohio to El Dorado in 1917. After she graduated from high school in 1925, she earned her teaching certificate and taught all grades in a country school.
On Nov. 27, 1926, she married Paul L. Dimit. in Ponca City. They moved to Winfield in 1942. They were married 63 years before he died July 16, 1990.
A homemaker, Dimit worked outside the home at King's, Kerr's and Anthony's dress shops. She also worked at Pierce's and Graves Drug Store.
She had been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1942 and was formerly in the Army mothers group and a church circle.
Survivors include a son, Tom Dimit, Winfield; two daughters, Peggy A. Bean, Aurora, Colo., and Kay Russell, Winfield; a sister, Kathryn "Babe" Garrison, El Dorado; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Eunice Haines
ALTUS, Okla. - Eunice M. Haines, 78, longtime resident of Altus, died Feb. 23, 2001, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Services were held Feb. 28 in Kincannon Chapel. Burial was in Altus City Cemetery.
Haines was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Winfield, to Martha Frances (Tuggle) and Walter McCreary. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1940.
After working for Boeing Aircraft for about four years, she married Harold M. Haines on July 14, 1944, in Winfield. They moved to Manhattan, then to Altus where her husband established a veterinary hospital in 1946. A homemaker, Haines helped her husband run the hospital for more than 50 years.
Haines earned the name of "Ice Cream Lady" by delivering ice cream to Altus nursing home residents, sometimes twice weekly, for more than 20 years.
She was a member of a geological society.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Harold Haines, Altus; two daughters, Terry Adams, Altus, and Kerry Charlton, Portland, Ore.; a son, Ki Haines, Houston; a sister, Jeanne Shaffer, Livingston, Texas; two brothers, James McCreary and John McCreary, both of Portland, Ore.; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Donald Long
Services for Donald R. Long were held at 10 a.m. March 10, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Lloyd Clarkson and other friends of the Long family spoke. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Chris Condon, Butch LeVelle, Don M. Long, Gerald Miller, Steve Trainor and Keith Wilson.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Miles Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Louise Womacks
Louise H. Womacks, 93, a resident of Atlanta for over 70 years, died March 10, 2001, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Order of Eastern Star committal ceremonies will be conducted in Atlanta Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with Cookson Hills Christian Home for Children. Contributions may be made through the Atlanta Christian Church or the funeral home.
Womacks was born Aug. 19, 1907, on a farm near Braman, Okla., to Anna (Janke) and Henry Kampschroeder. She received her early education in the Braman area before moving to Winfield in 1920.
She received her high school education at St. John's Academy in Winfield, graduating in 1926. She later received her teaching certification at Pittsburg State University and taught at Atlanta.
On July 5, 1927, she married E.L. "Eugene" Womacks in Miami, Okla., and they lived and worked on their farm near Atlanta throughout nearly 71 years of marriage.
During the 1960s Womacks taught remedial reading in the Atlanta school district.
Her husband died June 7, 1998. Womacks had resided at Cumbernauld Village since November 1999.
A longtime member of the Atlanta Christian Church, she served many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was also affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star in Burden; a member of the Progress Club, the Atlanta Garden Club and an Extension Homemakers Unit, and a 4-H leader.
Survivors include a son, Larry Womacks, Atlanta; two daughters, Carmen Shannon, Hominy, Okla., and Jeanine Thompson, Independence; a brother, Henry Kampschroeder, Winfield; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
George Goff
Services for George O. Goff were held at 10 a.m. March 10, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. James M. McIntosh Jr. officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
June Vasey was the organist. Music included "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden."
Honorary casket bearers were Bill Crittenden, George Parsons, Virgil Dennett, Don Potter, M.K. Gordon III and Bob Kearns.
Casket bearers were Hal Ankrom, Johnny Mays, Steve Otto, Daryl Parsons, Otis Lynes and Kenny Porter.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Patricia Rood
Patricia Ruth "Pat" Rood, 69, of 321 E. 12th, Winfield, died March 11, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and Legacy, a regional foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Rood was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Winfield, to Ruth (Winters) and Lester W. Coad. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1949 and from Kansas State University in 1953.
On May 30, 1954, she married Lawrence H. Rood in Winfield. They owned and operated Coad Candy Co. from 1966 to 1996.
Rood was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eve Club and Hypatia.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Rood, Winfield; two sons, Kevin Lawrence Rood, Wichita, and Daniel George Rood, Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Roger Coad, Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Marjorie McCormick, Portland, Ore.; and six grandchildren.
Judy McAlister
A vigil and Rosary service for Judith A. McAlister were held at 7 p.m. March 9, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m March 10 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated, and Dorothy Groene was the organist. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Dick and Bob Holverson, Kevin Donohue, Tim Seltmann, Alan Alberding and Danny Winslow.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Holy Name Catholic Church.
Raymond Essex
DOUGLASS - Raymond Essex, 83, of Douglass, a retired rural mail carrier and barber, died March 13, 2001, at the Veterans Administration hospital in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Douglass Cemetery. The Rev. Reit Stonger will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army, Fort Riley. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Essex was born July 25, 1917, in Douglass, to Bessie (Morrison) and Walter Essex.
On June 20, 1938, he married Maxine Davis in El Dorado. After retiring, they moved to Afton, Okla. She died in 1980.
In 1981 he married Colleen Lowe and moved to Grove, Okla., and later to Seneca, Mo.
Essex was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Lodge and the Wichita Consistory. He was an Eagle Scout and a scoutmaster for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Essex, Douglass; a daughter, Rayma Lee Essex, Goddard; a brother, Robert Essex, Loveland, Colo.; and a sister, Marjorie Jacobs, Jetmore.
