John Phillips

MAPLE CITY - Services for John E. Phillips were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 9, 2000, in Maple City Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Brewer officiated.

"Amazing Grace" was sung by Jim Phillips, Lynn Merritt and Lisa Delgado, with Phillips accompanying on guitar.

American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, both of Winfield, performed military ceremonies.

A memorial has been established with the Church of God Holiness.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lincoln Robinson

CEDAR VALE - Services for Lincoln Fay Robinson were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 9, 2000, in Ozro Falls Cemetery. The Rev. George Gardner officiated.

A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Elva Allen

DOUGLASS - Services for Elva Emma Cristina Allen were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 11, 2000, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Cliff Muci officiated. Burial was in Douglass Cemetery.

Sharon Anderson sang "I Found the Answer" and "Amazing Grace." Vivian Seal was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were Harold Williams, John Green, Joe Spencer and Jim Pykiet.

Casket bearers were Rick Stewart, Richard Davis, Bill Taylor, Hope Taylor, Larry Jones and Bob Clark.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Douglass.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Smith

BURDEN - Jennie Mabel Smith, 91, of Burden, died Dec. 11, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the Burden Fire Department and the Hope Foundation of Cumbernauld Village.

Smith was born Sept. 4, 1908, in Atlanta, to Para (Jamison) and Clarence Moss. She was raised and educated in eastern Cowley County.

On Jan. 30, 1929, she married Ray H. Smith in Burden. They farmed in the Burden area for many years, and she was a homemaker. Her husband died May 25, 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Louise Osborn, and a son, Lowell Smith, both of Burden; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Randy Conner

Services for Randy A. Conner were held at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 12, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ken Beckner officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music selections included "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce, "All in All" by Ashley Conner, "My Buddy" by Jerry Jeff Walker, "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton and "Freebird" by Lynard Skynard.

Honorary casket bearers were Chris, David and Jason Conner and Ed Elrod.

Casket bearers were Ricky Conner, John Halverstadt, Terry Johnson, Dewy Kerr, Brian Vossen and Danny Wade.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Tres Kill

A Mass of Christian Burial for Theresa "Tres" Kill was celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 12, 2000, at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated, and the Rev. Francis Cox gave the eulogy.

Dorothy Groene was the organist. Bill Chamberland sang "Ave Maria." Other music included "Take My Hands" and "How Great Thou Art."

Burial was at 1:30 p.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Moline.

Honorary casket bearers were Jim Byrnes, Paul Bocquin, Carl Horton and Bill Kristek.

Casket bearers were Jim Sellars, Joe and Kevin Byrnes and Bob and Mike Kill.

A Rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel.

Memorials have established with Holy Name Catholic Church and the American Cancer Society.

Helen Stanton

TOPEKA - The Rev. Helen Lenore Stanton, 99, former resident of Elk and Greenwood counties, died Dec. 10, 2000, at the United Methodist Home in Topeka.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Home. The Rev. Charles Benton will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. in Piedmont Cemetery. The Rev. Don Harper will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Good Samaritan Fund in Topeka and the Piedmont United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Stanton was born May 4, 1901, in Kansas City, Kan., to Delia Adeline (Sillin) and Daniel Fillmore O'Donnell. She graduated from high school in Paola in 1920 and taught school for a year before attending Kansas City University.

In 1926 she married Omer Watts Stanton in Kansas City, Kan. They moved to New Jersey where she taught school for two years before returning to Kansas in 1929. During World War II, she began her career as a minister by serving various Kansas churches.

In the late 1950s she and her husband moved to Greenwood County where they shared a ministry in Severy, Fall River, Climax and Piedmont. In 1962 her husband retired, and they moved from the Severy parsonage to Piedmont where she was appointed pastor. Her husband died in 1974, and in 1979 she moved to the United Methodist Home for the Aged in Topeka.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Hooper, Hutchinson, and Cora Dee Wright, Olathe; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gordy Stewart

ARKANSAS CITY - Howard G. "Gordy" Stewart, 89, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 12, 2000, at his residence.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Central Christian Church and Spring Hill Golf Course. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Stewart was born May 12, 1911, in Starksville, Miss., to Grace (Wood) and Samuel O. Stewart. When he was 12, the family moved to Arkansas City. He graduated from high school in 1932 and went on to attend junior college. During his school years, he participated in football, track, wrestling and boxing. He went undefeated in Golden Gloves boxing in Wichita.

Stewart worked at the Shell Oil refinery until it closed in 1938 and for Civil Service until 1942. He served in the U.S. Army 14th Armored Division in France and Germany from 1942 through 1945.

He then learned painting and decorating and was an independent contractor until his retirement in 1973.

On Nov. 29, 1952, he married Goldie Childs in Independence, Mo., and the couple made their home in Arkansas City.

A golf enthusiast, Stewart was a volunteer worker at Spring Hill Golf Course for many years. He was a member of Central Christian Church, Spencer-Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254, Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18 and Springhill Golf Association.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie Stewart, Arkansas City; a son, David Stewart, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Nanci House, Jacksonville, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mabel Smith

BURDEN - Services for Mabel Smith were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 14, 2000, at Wheeler Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated, and burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Vocalist was Jeleanne Osborn. Organist was Evelyn Upchurch.

Honorary casket bearers were Brandon Smith, Tate Osborn, Chris King, Chris Benest and Robert Smith Jr.

Casket bearers were Jimmy Osborn, Jimmy Hiatt, Mike Smith, Bobby Smith, Tyler Osborn and Tyson Osborn.

Memorials have been established with the Burden Fire Department and Hope Foundation at Cumbernauld Village.

Bula Mae Archer-Lemert

SEDAN - Bula Mae Archer-Lemert, 90, of Sedan, died Dec. 15, 2000, at Pleasant Valley Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wauneta United Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Bowyer officiating. Burial will be in Ozro Falls Cemetery near Hewins. Graves Funeral Home, Caney, is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

A memorial has been established with Wauneta United Methodist Church.

Born May 16, 1910, in Chautauqua County, she was a daughter of Tom and Angie (Parcell) Archer. She attended country schools, graduated from Grenola High School in 1926 and attended Wichita State University.

On Sept. 8, 1928, she married Merl L. Lemert.

Archer-Lemert held numerous offices in the Kansas Federation of Republican Women, including state president. For 11 years she was district administrator for Congressman Joe Sckubitz, maintaining an office in Winfield.

She was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church, Chapter DC of P.E.O. and the Republican Women of Montgomery County. She was a former member of the Kansas Newspaper Women.

Survivors include a daughter, Joy Fadely, Sedan, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Diane Bradbury of Winfield is a niece.

Two sons, Larry C. Lemert in 1955 and Archer Locke Lemert in 1987, preceded her in death.
