Bill Griffith
GRENOLA - Billy Wayne "Bill" Griffith, 65, of Grenola, died Dec. 5, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Grenola Christian Church. Pastor Wallace Wartick will officiate. Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 of Moline will conduct military services in Greenlawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Griffith was born April 13, 1935, in Junction City, to Janie (Douglas) and Ernest Griffith. He graduated from high school in the Junction City area before joining the United States Army and serving in the Korean Conflict.
Griffith lived in Arkansas and was a professional truck driver for many years. He moved with his family to Rock in 1975, then to Grenola in 1978.
On Dec. 27, 1978, he married Evelyn Sue Rowland and they made their home in Grenola. He retired from trucking in 1990 and had been recently employed by Kelly Manufacturing in Grenola.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Griffith, Grenola; two sons, William Simms, Charlotte, N.C., and Jason Griffith, Burden; his daughters, Denise Conklin, Charlotte, N.C., and Linda Simms, Wichita; his brothers, Dale Griffith, Independence, Mo., and Ernest "Junior" Griffith, Winfield; and three grandchildren.
Opal Thompson
STROUD, Okla. - Opal Jean Thompson, 92, of Stroud, died Dec. 5, 2000.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Ozro Falls Cemetery
near Hewins. Jim Thompson will officiate. Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Stroud is in charge of arrangements.
Thompson was born July 27, 1908, in Oktaha, Okla., to May (Moore) and Wiley Evans.
In 1934 she married Charles H. Thompson in Pawhuska, Okla. He died May 29, 1986.
She was a resident of Stroud for the past year, moving there from Hominy, Okla., where she had lived since 1947.
Thompson retired in 1988 after working in Tulsa for 30 years as a secretary and for 25 years as manager of The Office Service, a telephone answering and secretarial service.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Tulsa.
Survivors include a son, Jim Bob Thompson, Stroud, Okla.; a sister, Biffle Gordon, Cedar Vale; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Elva Allen
Elva Emma Cristina Allen, 94, formerly of Douglass, died Dec. 6, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Douglass Christian Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the Douglass Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or church.
Allen was born Dec. 3, 1906, in Lindsborg, to Emma (Johnson) and Carl Albin Carlman. As a child, she moved to Rock and then to Douglass where the family ran a hotel. After graduating from Douglass High School in 1925, she taught in country schools.
On Aug. 31, 1927, she married Willis Edwin Allen in Winfield, and they made their home in Douglass. A homemaker, she also did substitute teaching after her children were grown. She helped with the election board for over 10 years.
Allen was a member of the Douglass Christian Church and involved in many other organizations, including the Rebekahs, Ladies Encampment Auxiliary, Patriarch Militant, Coffee Drinkers Club, Quilt Guild and March of Dimes Coffees.
Survivors include a son, Willis Elbert Allen, Douglass; a brother, Bud Carlman, Georgetown, Texas; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Evelyn Joyce Spencer, died March 23, 2000.
John Phillips
ARKANSAS CITY - John E. Phillips, 85, of Arkansas City, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 6, 2000, at Medicalodge North in Arkansas City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Maple City Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Church of God Holiness in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Phillips was born May 3, 1915, on a farm south of Dearing, to Latrisha A. (Wise) and William E. Phillips. When he was an infant, the family moved to Osage County, Okla., where he was raised and educated.
A veteran of World War II, Phillips served with the U.S. Army 30th Infantry Cannon Co. in Tunisia, Germany, France and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart in 1944 for injuries received in combat in Europe.
In 1945 he married Dorothy Barger, and the couple resided in Oklahoma for many years. He was employed in ranching and lumber yards and later worked for railroads for nearly 10 years. Following his wife's death, he resided in Winfield for several years.
In 1984 he married Dorothy Taylor, and the couple resided in Oklahoma and Arkansas City throughout their marriage. Phillips had been living at Medicalodge North since April 1998.
He attended the Church of God Holiness.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Phillips, Arkansas City; a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Phillips, Sperry, Okla.; two great-grandchildren, three stepchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
A son, Johnny Phillips, preceded him in death.
Randy Conner
Randy A. Conner, 44, of Winfield, died Dec. 8, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Conner was born Oct. 1, 1956, in Arkansas City, to Carrol Ann (Collins) and Adron Abe Conner. He attended Winfield schools and received his General Equivalency Diploma.
After high school he went to work for Mike's Phillips 66 in Winfield for a few years. In 1979 he went work at B&S Well Service and had many jobs in oil fields. He also worked at Skyline in Arkansas City and Morton Buildings. His last part-time job was at Goob's Place in Winfield.
He was involved with the Walnut Valley Festival and the Sons of the American Legion.
Survivors include his family, Abe and Carrol Conner, a brother, Ricky Conner, and two sisters, Lisa Marney and Wendy Handley, all of Winfield.
Tres Kill
Theresa M. "Tres" Kill, 97, of Winfield, died Dec. 6, 2000, at William Newton Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery
in Moline.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to Rosary time Monday.
Memorials have been established with Holy Name Catholic Church and the American Cancer Society.
Kill was born Jan. 26, 1903, in Elk Falls, to Alice (Keefe) and Frank Kill. She was raised in Elk Falls and graduated from Elk Falls High School. She also attended Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita.
Kill graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita in 1927 and in 1931 was the first woman to graduate from Harvard University Medical School with a certificate in physical therapy.
The first physical therapist in Kansas, Kill worked as director of physiotherapy at St. Mary's Hospital and Snyder Clinic in Winfield from 1930 to 1941. In 1944 she served as director and head instructor of physical therapy at Camp Crowder, Mo.
In 1946 she returned to Winfield and organized the physiotherapy departments at St. Mary's Hospital and Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, where she served as director from 1952 to 1972. The state hospital program was the first physical therapy department for the mentally retarded in the United States. Kill was also on the clinical faculty of the University of Kansas Medical Center.
From 1942 to 1978 she lived in Cedar Vale.
Kill helped organize the Kansas Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association and worked for the passage of a bill to require registration of physical therapists in Kansas.
After her retirement in 1972, she cared for her sister, Gertrude, and her adopted daughter, Rosalee. She was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the altar society.
A frequent speaker for women's groups and nursing homes, she continued to demonstrate exercises that would help one get around better and live longer.
Survivors include a sister, Alice Sellers, Enid, Okla., nieces and nephews.
Marie Allred
Services for Marie L. Allred were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 7, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Richard Clower sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Amazing Grace." Irma Scholfield was the organist.
Casket bearers were Don Adams, Jim Day, Harry Evans Jr., Ben Holman, Paul Wesley and Keith Wood.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Meals On Wheels.
Ester McKaig
WICHITA - Ester McKaig, 70, retired licensed practical nurse, of Wichita, died Dec. 7, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 11 in Broadway Mortuary Chapel.
Survivors include a son, Patrick McKaig, Wichita; and three brothers, Norman E. Ellis, Ponca City, Bill Ellis, Stockton, Mo., and Guy R. Ellis, Stockton, Calif.
