Betty Shaw

ARKANSAS CITY - Betty Marie Shaw, 77, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 24, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Riverview Cemetery. Cremation has been effected. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Born May 30, 1923, at Caney, Shaw was a daughter of Jesse and Alice Marie (Cole) Kettle. She attended Caney schools and McPherson College and earned her licensed practical nursing certificate.

In May 1942 she married Jerald E. Shaw in Newkirk, Okla. They lived in rural Kansas and Oklahoma for many years before settling in Arkansas City in 1984. Her husband died in 1985.

Shaw was employed as a nurse at various places, including Medicalodge East Health Care Center, Presbyterian Manor and Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include three sons, Tom, Bob and Mike Shaw, and a daughter, Theresa Musgrove, all of Arkansas City, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mina Horn

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Mina Lucile Horn, 92, of Las Cruces, former Cowley County resident, died Nov. 22, 2000, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Horn was born April 14, 1908, in the Dexter community, to Mabel Madge (Maurer) and Ross Mathias Thompson. She was raised in the Cambridge and Dexter areas, receiving her earliest education in the Star Valley school. She was a 1926 graduate of Dexter High School.

On June 1, 1930, she married Carl Adolf Horn at Sedan. They made their first home in Wichita and later resided in Santa Rosa, N.M., before moving to the Fort Worth, Texas, area.

Horn taught in Texas public schools for many years and also served 30 years as secretary-treasurer for the family businesses: Horn Metals Inc. and C.A. Horn Mfg. Co. The couple retired in 1983.

She had resided in Las Cruces since her husband's death on Jan. 12, 1990.

A member of the Dexter Christian Church, Horn was very involved with education in Texas. She had served as president of the White Settlement (Texas) Parent-Teacher Association; treasurer of the Arlington Heights Parent-Teacher Association; first vice president of the Fort Worth Council of Parents and Teachers; and editor of the Council News. She had been chairperson of Education for Parents, District 1, Austin, and in 1954, she was awarded a life member certificate from Texas Parents and Teachers.

She worked in the political campaigns of Sen. Barry Goldwater and President Ronald Reagan.

Survivors include her daughters, Joan Cole, Las Cruces, N.M., and Dotty Leblang, Francistown, N.H.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

William Kittrell

BELLA VISTA, Ark. - William D. "Dan" Kittrell, 75, of Bella Vista, died Nov. 24, 2000, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. today at Bella Vista Community Church. The Rev. David McKay officiated. Burial was to be in Tannehill Cemetery near Winfield. Bella Vista Funeral Home & Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd., Bella Vista, AR 72714.

Kittrell was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Green Forest, Ark., to Amanda Lawrence and Henry H. Kittrell. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Kittrell and his wife, Jeanette, moved to Bella Vista in 1979 from Macksville. He was a school administrator for 26 years and a broker/owner of Coldwell Banker Arka-Vista Realty for 10 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of American Legion Post 341, Bella Vista, Sugar Creakers and Missing Links golf groups and Snooker Club.

A daughter, Karen J. Kittrell, died March 4, 1951.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Kittrell, Bella Vista; a son, Steven D. Kittrell, Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Beverly K. Hine, Las Cruces, N.M.; a sister, Ivah Pratt, San Diego; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Dean Cox

CEDAR VALE - Services for Dean Cox were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 25, 2000, at the Cedar Vale Church of Christ. Chuck Evans officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Music included "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "It Is Well With My Soul."

Casket bearers were Mike Cox, Gary Cox, Lee Cox Jr., Marland Cox, Guy Auman, Travis Cox, Clark Jalo, Burke Lenington and Cody Lenington.

A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale Historical Museum.

Wheeler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Humbert

Rosa Lorene Moore Jones Humbert, 93, longtime Winfield resident, died Nov. 25, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight and until noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Humbert was born Oct. 7, 1907, on a farm near Dexter, to Maude (Jenkins) and Marvin Moore. Raised in the Dexter area, she attended Fairview Rural School and Dexter High School.

On June 24, 1925, she married Howard Jones. They lived in many locations in the United States because of her husband's construction employment. After they returned to Winfield in 1963, she worked as a nurse's aide at William Newton Memorial Hospital until her retirement. Her husband died in February 1970.

On June 8, 1973, she married Harry I. Humbert in Winfield. They lived in Winfield and spent their winters in Texas. After her husband died Feb. 7, 1983, she resided at Walnut Towers for 13 years before moving to Good Samaritan Village in 1997.

A member of the First Assembly of God Church, Humbert served as a mentor for junior high school girls and a "grandma" for kindergarteners while in her 80s.

Survivors include a daughter, Margie Jones, Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Howard R. Jones, Salt Lake City, and Harold L. Jones, Austin, Texas; three stepdaughters, Glenda Waldorf and Corabelle Reddington, both of Winfield, and Brenda McCool, Hunter, Okla.; a stepson, Harry Humbert Jr., Winfield; two brothers, Marvin Moore and Henry Moore, both of Arkansas City; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, 10 stepgrandchildren and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Larry Clinkingbeard

ARKANSAS CITY - Lawrence Wayne "Larry" Clinkingbeard, 59, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 29, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Clinkingbeard was born June 27, 1941, in Arkansas City, to Dollie Lucille (Dockery) and Sam Clinkingbeard. He was raised in the Blackwell, Okla., area and returned to Arkansas City when he was 19 years old.

He had lived in Arkansas City since then except for a short time in Aurora, Mo. For several years he worked for Arkansas City's sanitation department.

On Oct. 10, 1987, he married Reba Lynn Moore in Arkansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Clinkingbeard, Arkansas City; a son, Jessie Wayne Clinkingbeard, Aurora, Mo.; a daughter, Jacqueline Bauler, Sumter, S.C.; two sisters, Bertha Marie Snow and Clara Mae Goermly, Blackwell; and a half-sister, Eleanor Cockings, Pueblo, Colo.

Donald Coon

Services for Donald Dean Coon were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 28, 2000, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.

Vocal music included "Daddy's Hands," by Trudy Andes, "Grandpa, Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days," performed by The Judds, "Go Rest High on that Mountain," by Garylynn Andes, and "Love Without End, Amen," performed by George Strait. Martha Brandenburg was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were John Brewer, Carl Jordan, Edmon Kidd, Melvin Martin, Leonard O'Neil and Jerry Weigle.

Casket bearers were Ron Askins, Craig Coon, Kevin Coon, Virgil Dennett, Marty Kerr and Alan Moore.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Dixon

Mabel Marie Dixon, 84, of Winfield, formerly of Vinita, Okla., died Nov. 23, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Big Cabin Cemetery, Vinita, under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home, Vinita.

Dixon was born July 15, 1916, in Conway, Mo., to Eva Alice (Montgomery) and William T. Drake.

On Feb. 4, 1939, she married Paul Dixon. He died in 1979.

Dixon worked at Southeast School in Vinita for 20 years before moving to Winfield. At Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, she worked as a foster grandparent for 13 years.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Vinita.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Dixon Jr., Rock, and Robert Birkes, Owasso; a daughter, Betty Jones, Satellite, Fla.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gregory McClurg

Gregory Wayne McClurg, 18, of 1 Berwick Court, Winfield, died Nov. 28, 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

A vigil and Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Memorials have been established with Holy Name Catholic Church Catholic Youth Organization, Winfield High School and William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Gregory was born Nov. 21, 1982, in Borger, Texas, to Cathy (Littleton) and Thomas McClurg. He was a senior at Winfield High School and worked at Ziegler True Value.

Gregory moved from Borger to Winfield in 1991. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and attended CYO.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Cathy McClurg, and a brother, Kevin McClurg, all of Winfield; his grandparents, Vera McClurg, Victoria, and Ed and Linda Littleton, El Paso, Texas; and his girlfriend, Andrea Terronez, Winfield.
