Joyce Fortner
ARKANSAS CITY - Joyce Marie Fortner, 67, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 13, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Fortner was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Arkansas City, to Edna Lavina (Abernathy) and Joseph Madison Sparks. She was raised and educated in Arkansas City and Texas.
On April 9, 1955, she married Royal Vern Fortner in Winfield, and they made their home in Arkansas City. A homemaker, she was also a craftsperson.
Survivors include her husband, Vern Fortner, Arkansas City; four daughters, Arlene Cooskey and Darlene King, both of Tustin, Calif., Wilma Jones, Silverdale, and Belinda Pearman, Arkansas City; two sons, Roger Fox, Wichita, and Ron Fortner, Arkansas City; four sisters, Virginia Hughes, Arkansas City, Bonnie Jenkins, Newkirk, Patty Sivits, Burns, and Susie Sparks, Hutchinson; three brothers, Leon Sparks, Ashton, Dean Sparks, Newkirk, and Joseph "Junior" Sparks, Valley Center; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Cathy Fox, preceded her in death.
Lois Martin
ATLANTA - Eloise Lois Martin, 66, of Atlanta, died Nov. 13, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Wichita. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Martin was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Marvell, Ark., to Ruth Elizabeth (Graham) and Ervin Jefferson Nalley.
On Nov. 19, 1954, she married Lawrence R. "Larry" Martin in Wichita.
Martin was employed in the small-tool repair department at Beech Aircraft in Wichita before her retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Martin, Atlanta; two daughters, Rhonda McNeill, Derby, and Michelle Schniepp, Goddard; a brother, William "Buddy" Nalley, Kimberling City, Mo.; a sister, Peggy Loftis, Gainesville, Mo.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Vida McConn
Vida M. McConn, 79, of 321 W. 10th, Winfield, died Nov. 12, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Deacon Tom Herlocker will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the Cancer Center of Kansas at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
McConn was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Winfield, to Thurmyl (Kowing) and Elmer "Spud" Deckard. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1939.
On May 30, 1942, she married Richard McConn in Winfield. A homemaker until her sons were out of school, she then worked as a salesperson for Marsh's Shoes and later Dean's Menswear.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Richard McConn, Winfield; two sons, Rick McConn, Dallas, and Patric McConn, Broken Arrow, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
Terry Newton
ARKANSAS CITY - Terry Lee Newton, 62, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 13, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Newton was born March 19, 1938, in Atlanta, to Lillian Mae (Curry) and Roy James Newton. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1956 and later attended Cowley County Community College and Area Vocational and Technical School.
For four years during the late 1950s, he served in the United States Navy.
On Nov. 2, 1962, he married Beverly Bush in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Arkansas City.
Newton had worked as a technician and tool coordinator for Raytheon Aircraft Co. in Wichita for 36 years until retiring in September due to his health.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Newton, Arkansas City; two sons, Gregory Newton, Augusta, and Jason Newton, Parkeville, Mo.; two brothers, Jim Newton, Grove, Okla., and Rondal Joe "John" Newton, Sedan; a sister, Shirley Lomon, Mesa, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
John Story
Services for John Boyd Story were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 9, 2000, at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Bob Layne and Deacons Suzanne Layne and Tom Herlocker officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included "The Strife Is O'er," "The Navy Hymn," "Amazing Grace," the "Sanctus," "My God Thy Table Now Is Spread," "A Mighty Fortress," "Now My Tongue" and "Jesus Christ Is Risen." Jackie Hauer was the organist.
Ministers of the chalice were Loyette Olson, Joe Langley and Jim Buterbaugh. Lector was George Lancaster. Acolyte was Grace Hall. Ushers were Lucien Barbour and Karen Moser. Altar guild representatives were Diane Norris and Gretchen Herlocker.
Honorary casket bearers were Scott Reiter, Lloyd Clarkson, Paul Doolittle, Fred Satterthwaite, Bradley Light, Errol Lambert, Lucien Barbour and Dean Kennedy.
Casket bearers were Larry Hoover, Kent Miller, Emil Wittenborn, Gregg Mettling, Bill Taylor III, J.R. Jimeson, Steve Gordon and O. Dean Stevens.
Memorials have been established with the Grace Episcopal Church Endowment Fund and the Udall Historical Museum.

Ada Dunbar
Services for Ada Elizabeth Dunbar were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 15, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Shawn Sturm and Orvan Gilstrap officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.
Martha Brandenburg was the organist. Vocal music included "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden," presented by the Rev. Gilstrap.
Casket bearers were Charles Cromley, Bill Davis, Jim Day, Mark Prouty, Tony Tapia and Keith Wood.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church.
Kenneth Harrod
HOWARD - Kenneth Olen Harrod, 79, of Howard, died Nov. 14, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Severy Baptist Church. Pastor Tony Pameticky will officiate. Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 will conduct military services in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Severy Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Harrod was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Howard, to Ada (Stone) and William Harrod. He graduated from Piedmont High School and was employed by ranchers in the Piedmont community before serving in the United States Navy during World War II.
On Nov. 22, 1946, he married Florence Ann Boqua in Springfield, Ore. They lived in California for two years before moving to Kansas in 1948.
Harrod was a farmer and rancher in Elk County for many years. In 1973 he and his wife bought a farm southeast of Severy on Indian Creek. They lived there until moving to Howard in 1995. His wife died Dec. 5, 1995.
Harrod was a member of Carter-Rader American Legion Post in Howard and Severy Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Tim Harrod, Marathon, Wis., and Carl Harrod, Tacoma, Wash.; a brother, Chet Harrod, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Naomi Hinkle, Valley Center; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Elva Schechter
Elva F. Schechter, 80, of Winfield Rest Haven, formerly of Sterling, died Nov. 15, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Sterling Community Cemetery. The Rev. Glen Holman will officiate.
Friends may call at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
A memorial has been established with Sterling United Presbyterian Church.
Schechter was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Zenith, to Zella (Gordon) and James Henry.
On June 2, 1942, she married Bruce D. Schechter in Sterling. He died Sept. 3, 1990.
A longtime resident of Sterling, she was a retired school teacher. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Rhodes, Winfield, and Patty Kelso, Sterling; a son, David Schechter, Lyons; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Lloyd Dowler
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Lloyd A. Dowler were held Nov. 8, 2000, in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Warren Smith officiated.
Casket bearers were Bob Sherrard, Phil Wedd, Dale Dowler, Wayne Dowler, Jim Dowler and Richard Dowler.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
