Juvene Allison

Services for B. Juvene Allison were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at the Grenola United Methodist Church. The Revs. Don Foster and Sheila Ratzlaff officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Maureen Moore was the pianist. Theresa Jones sang "I Sure Miss You" and "Entertaining Angels." Dale Steward sang "No One Ever Cared for Me like Jesus."

Honorary casket bearers were John Mark Arbuckle, R.G. Jordan, Jim Sweet and Jess Wolfe.

Casket bearers were Lowell French, Carl Hawley, Dean Keplinger, Gary Kinnaman, Wendall Shelton, Dale Steward and Glen Trogdan.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Gilbert

Services for Betty I. Gilbert were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at Latham United Methodist Church. The Rev. Julie Craft officiated. Burial was in Brownlow Cemetery.

Teresa McBeth and Ed Hodges sang "In the Garden" and "It Is Well with My Soul."

Casket bearers were Chuck Doudna, Rick Estes, Kenny Helton, Larry Hodges, Joe Morris and Hank Neely.

A memorial has been established with Latham United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Hayes

Services for Margaret Barr Hayes were held at 1 a.m. Oct. 13 in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service.

The Rev. Earnest McClure officiated. Inurnment was in Highland Cemetery.

Special music included "Walk Around Heaven."

Arvenia Hughes gave the family tributes.

A memorial has been established with Building Fund 2000 of Second Baptist Church.

Chester Hobart

CEDAR VALE - Chester G. Hobart, 77, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 15, 2000, at his home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Cedar Vale First Baptist Church.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Hobart was born Jan. 24, 1923, in Independence. He was raised on the family farm between Cedar Vale and Grenola, attended rural schools and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1941.

On May 29, 1949, he married June Patterson at the Cedar Vale Baptist Church parsonage.

A farmer and rancher, he had been active in the Cedar Vale Lions Club and a board member of the Chautauqua County Livestock Association, Big Caney Watershed, Caney Valley Electrical Co-op, Cedar Vale Community Hospital and the Cedar Vale Historical Society. He was an active member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, June Hobart, Cedar Vale; a daughter, Phyllis Creed, Goddard; two sons, Dale Everett Hobart, Cedar Vale, and Robert Louis Hobart, Burden; a sister, Esther Foster, Independence; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Martin

Services for Charles M. Martin were held at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Lee Wheeler officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Steve Frazier, Bill Morgan and Floyd Thomas.

Casket bearers were Lowell Adams, Edwin Bauman, John Brazle, John Elam Jr., Byron Jones and Gene Wheeler.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Association.

Ethel Loftin

Ethel Loftin, 96, formerly of Walnut Towers, died Oct. 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at DeBusk Cemetery near Elgin.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 4 to 5.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield First United Methodist Church.

Loftin was born Aug. 19, 1904, in Hope, Ark., to Lulu (Billingsley) and Ben Lemon.

In 1923 she married James Meredith Loftin in Sedan. He died Dec. 26, 1976.

She worked as a nurse's aide at the Sedan City Hospital for 15 years. Previous to that, she cooked for the Sedan schools.

She was a former member of the Sedan First Methodist Church and the Dorcas Society. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winfield.

The second resident to move into Walnut Towers, she lived there until moving to Good Samaritan in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Lenora Nation, Winfield, and Patsy Zammiello, Garland, Texas; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

John Melton

PRINCETON, Texas - John "B.J." Melton, 58, of Princeton, Texas, died Oct. 9, 2000, in Sherman, Texas.

Burial was in Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel, McKinney, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.

Melton was born July 19, 1942, in Caney, to Jewel (Young) Melton.

On July 18, 1987, he married Bette Young in Marion, Texas.

He installed home security systems for Brinks.

Survivors include his wife, Bette Melton, Princeton, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Melton, Poth, Texas; two sons, John Melton Jr., Falls City, Texas, and Melvin Melton, Stockdale, Texas; two stepdaughters, Vickie McConnell, Bacliff, Texas, and Evelyn Mazon, Houston; a stepson, Keith McConnell, Humble, Texas; his parents, Melvin and Jewel Melton, and two brothers, Ronald Melton and Leon Melton, all of Cedar Vale; a sister, Kay Brill, Udall; and 17 grandchildren.

Lyle Peterson

ARKANSAS CITY - Lyle Eugene "Sonny" Peterson, 49, lifelong resident of Arkansas City, died Oct. 17, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Peterson was born Jan. 23, 1951, in Arkansas City, to Zelphia J. (Stands) and Lyle Robert Peterson. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1970 and later from Cowley County Community College.

He had worked in the maintenance department of the college, worked for John Potterton delivering milk and later at Cessna Aircraft at Strother Field and the Arkansas City Packing plant.

Survivors include his mother, Zelphia Peterson, Arkansas City; and three sisters, Virginia Musson, Arkansas City, Carolyn Williams, Pocatello, Idaho, and Susan Dainty, El Dorado.

Richard Brown

Richard D. Brown, 68, of 1722 E. 10th, Winfield, died Oct. 17, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services, including a Masonic service, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church. Military graveside rites will be conducted at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight and until noon Friday.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and Winfield Troop 314 Boy Scouts of America. Contributions may be made at the church or the funeral home.

Brown was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Chandler, Okla., to Josephine (Becker) and Harold A. Brown. When he was a youth, the family moved to Winfield. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1950. In 1975 he received a degree in applied science and machine tool technology from Cowley County Community College.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force.

On Jan. 12, 1958, he married Carlene Louise Hamlin at the First Christian Church. They lived in Winfield throughout their marriage.

Brown was a quality control officer for Boeing Aircraft Co. at Air Force bases throughout the U.S. He retired from Boeing following 28 years of service.

He was an active leader and supporter of Boy Scouts for 60 years. He was assistant district commissioner for the Southwinds District and a committee member of Winfield Troop 314 at the time of his death.He was awarded the Silver Beaver by the National Boy Scouts of America in 1979 and the District Award of Merit in 1971.

A member of First Christian Church, he served in various positions including deacon, elder and trustee. He was a longtime member of Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, St. John Council 23, Royal Arch Chapter 31, Winfield Commandry 15 and Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star. He was also active in the International Order of Rainbow for Girls on both the local and state levels.

Brown was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, American Legion Post 90 in Wellington, the Flatlander Buckle Club and the Kansas State Rifle Association. In April 1998 he received the First Citizen Award for his service to the community.

Survivors include his wife, Carlene Louise Brown, and a son, Eric A. Brown, both of Winfield; three brothers, Harold A. Brown, Wichita, Sam L. Brown, Aumsville, Ore., and Larry D. Brown, Wichita; two foster children, Mary Spencer and Richard Brock; and two grandchildren.
