John Harris
DALLAS - John Lavere Harris, 91, formerly of Burden, died Sept. 20, 2000, in Dallas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Grove Hill Chapel in Dallas.
Harris was born Oct. 6, 1908, in Dallas.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Irene Harris; a daughter, Leora Easley; two sons, Jack Harris and Bill Harris; a brother, Carrol Harris; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Russel Brown
BURDEN - Russel W. Brown, 62, formerly of Burden, died Sept. 21, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Braman, Okla., cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Brown was born Oct. 24, 1937, in Braman, Okla., to Ruth (Bridges) and William Henry Brown. When he was two, the family moved to Burden. He graduated from Burden High School in 1955.
After high school he worked for Wakefield Oil Co. in Winfield. He was married for a short time and later divorced. Then he went to work for Sandy's Automotive in Wichita.
In 1960 Brown became disabled. He moved to Dexter to work on a farm and later returned to Burden to help his mother on the family ranch.
Brown moved to Medicalodge in Douglass in 1995 and later to Lakepoint Rehabilitation Center in Rose Hill.
He was a member of the Dexter Baptist Church and the Burden First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Smith, Amarillo, Texas; three sisters, Darlene Cockrell, Prince George, Va., Dorothy Vickery, Arkansas City, and Faye Sumner, Burden; two grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
Helen Black
Services for Helen Black were held at 11 a.m. Sept. 21, 2000, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
June Vasey was the organist, and Martin Rude sang "The Lord's Prayer."
Casket bearers were Darrell Morrow, Ron Mozingo, Louis Black, Robert Saar, Jim Bowman and Newton Richardson.
Memorials have been established with Alzheimer's and Related Diseases and the First United Methodist Church.
Elizabeth Purdy
Services for Elizabeth L. Purdy were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 21, 2000, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Jean Wooddell was the organist, and Dr. James Schuppener was the vocalist. Music included "How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages," "O God Our Help in Ages Past," "Amazing Grace," "Steal Away to Jesus" and "Going Home."
Honorary casket bearers were Richard Peters, Newton Richardson, Kurt Klein, Jonathan Sackheim, Jerry Klein and Wayne Wilson.
Casket bearers were Lloyd Klein, George Lowe, Gene Peters, Charles Reece, Robert Peters and Don Peters.
Russel Brown
Services for Russel William Brown were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 23, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in the Braman, Okla., cemetery.
Wanda Mackey was the organist. Music included "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," performed by Mike Bailey, and "Go Rest High on That Mountain," performed by Vince Gill.
Casket bearers were Russel Jon Moore, Charles Moore, C.R. Sumner, Ed Smith, John Courtney, Bill Underwood and Walter Underwood.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Edd Carlson
Edd R. Carlson, 80, of Winfield, died Sept. 23, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Prairie Home Cemetery
at Holdrege, Neb.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Carlson was born July 1, 1920, in Udall, to Anna Otilda (Carlson) and Pete Carlson. He was raised in Udall and graduated from Udall High School in 1940.
On Dec. 19, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served with Headquarters Co., First Battalion, 32nd Infantry, during World War II in the Philippines, South Pacific and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in February 1945.
On Aug. 27, 1946, he married Evangeline R. "Van" Johnson in Holdrege, Neb. The couple made their home in Winfield. Carlson worked for Albertson's and later Wheeler's IGA in Winfield for more than 40 years until retiring in 1985.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church for more than 45 years and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 10.
Survivors include his wife, Van Carlson, Winfield; a daughter, Renae McCrory, Wichita; a son, Bruce Carlson, Mulvane; a sister, Ruth Newman, Yates Center; and four grandchildren.
Pat Jenkins
ARKANSAS CITY - Pat Jenkins, 87, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 23, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Southern Baptist Church. The Revs. Mike Cosgrove and Don Scott will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home tonight between 6 and 8.

Jenkins was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Flippin, Ark., to Cora Jane (Pierce) and William David Jenkins. He was raised and educated in Flippin.
On Oct. 10, 1938, he married Marie Jackson in Holdenville, Okla. They moved to Arkansas City in 1951. His wife preceded him in death.
Jenkins was president of Jenkins & Sons Production Inc. and had been production superintendent for Herdon Drilling Co. from 1940 to 1983 when he retired.
He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Don Jenkins and Ronnie Jenkins, both of Arkansas City; six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Misako Krug
Misako Krug, 64, of Winfield, died Sept. 23, 2000, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Atlanta Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.

Krug was born May 5, 1936, in Hiroshima, Japan, to Tsuruko Takechi and Koichi Tanaka. She was raised in Kure, Japan, and attended seamstress school. As a young person, she worked in clothing sales.
On July 9, 1959, she married James R. Krug in Yokohama, Japan. Following her husband's Air Force career, the couple made their home in many places, including Japan, California, Colorado, England and Florida, before moving to Winfield.
A homemaker, Krug became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1967. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, J.R. Krug, and four sons, Joseph C. Krug, Jon D. Krug, Jamie P. Krug and Justin R. Krug, all of Winfield; a brother, Teruwo Tanaka, Japan; and a sister, Keiko Umeda, Kure, Japan.
Ralph Nelson
BLANCHARD, Okla. - Ralph Wayne Nelson, 46, died of cancer Sept. 22, 2000, at his home near Blanchard.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Springside Cemetery
at Arkansas City.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
Nelson was born Oct. 13, 1953, in Arkansas City, to Betty (Emmons) and Donald W. Nelson. He attended schools in Arkansas City and Newkirk.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army.
A self-employed trucker, Nelson attended the Christian Church. He had recently moved to the Blanchard area from Mustang, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Nelson, Blanchard; a son, Jason Wayne Nelson, Arkansas City; a daughter, Dallas Christine Costello, Ponca City; two stepsons, Shon Bridwell, Oklahoma City, and J.D. Crofford, Blanchard; a stepdaughter, Wendi Bridwell, Blanchard; his parents, Don and Betty Nelson, Arkansas City; four brothers, Bob Nelson, Andover, and Rick Nelson, Donny Nelson and Mike Nelson, all of Arkansas City; and five grandchildren.
