Bob Winslow
TYLER, Texas - Robert A. "Bob" Winslow, 71, of Tyler, died July 8, 2000, in Tyler Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Tyler. Dr. C. Earl Gibbs will officiate. Another service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Loran Fawcett Funeral Home in Neodesha.
A memorial has been established with Meals on Wheels.
Winslow was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Cherryvale.
A recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, he retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Tyler and the South Tyler Rotary Club and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Trinity Mother Frances Hospital.
Winslow had lived in Tyler for eight years and in Arlington, Texas, from 1969 to 1982.
His wife, Agnes Merle Porter Winslow, and a son, Mark Steven Winslow, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Denise Hays, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Delores Johnson, Emporia; a brother, Patrick Winslow, Las Vegas; and one grandchild.
Lulabell Bradshaw
Lulabell A. Bradshaw, 89, of Winfield, died July 10, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with Heartspring (Institute of Logopedics) in Wichita.
Bradshaw was born Dec. 30, 1910, in Newkirk, Okla., to Mary (Tweedy) and Charles A. Eberhardt. When she was six, she moved to Cowley County. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1929 and from Cowley County Community College.
On Sept. 22, 1934, she married Ralph Bradshaw in Arkansas City. He died Aug. 6, 1978.
Bradshaw worked as a foster parent at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center. She and her husband ran Bradshaw's Feed & Filling Station in Winfield for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Moore, and two grandsons, Leon and Roger Moore, all of Winfield.
Albin Bura
CASSVILLE, Mo. - Albin Bura, 92, of Cassville, formerly of Fulton, Mo., died July 9, 2000, at Red Rose Inn Retirement Center in Cassville.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Debo Funeral Chapel, Fulton. The Revs. Raymond McCallister and Raymond Dunlap will officiate. Burial will follow in Callaway Memorial Gardens.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church of Fulton and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shell Knob, Mo.
Bura was born Feb. 29, 1908, in Ramona, to Julio A. (Pecinofsky) and Maximilian E.G. Bura.
He graduated from Chillicothe (Mo.) Business College in 1928.
His wife of 43 years, Thelma Lorraine Bura, died in 1977.
On Oct. 7, 1978, he married Henrietta M. Briles, formerly of Winfield, in Fulton, Mo.
Bura spent 43 years in Fulton where he was employed as a cost accountant for Danuser Machine Co. He was actively involved in community activities until his retirement in 1973. He served 14 years as a volunteer campground host at Roaring River State Park in Cassville during the summer and spent winters in Weslaco, Texas, for 21 years.
He was a member of the Lone Scout Foundation, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, American Legion Post 210, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Fulton Lodge 48, Orion Chapter 49, Calvary Commandery 28, Missouri Lodge of Research and Moolah Temple.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Bura, Cassville; two sons, David E. Bura, Fulton, and Terry A. Bura, Twin Lake, Mich.; two daughters, Carolyn J. Bura, Overland Park, and Doris D. Hackman, Belton, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Mildred Myers, Shell Knob, Mo., and Claudine Pierson, San Diego; a stepson, Keith Briles, Medicine Lodge; a brother, Max Bura, Wichita; a half-brother, Aaron Bura, Emporia; a half-sister, Miriam Riddle; Dallas; and five grandchildren.
Opal Hurt
HOWARD - Opal Marie Hurt, 80, formerly of Severy, died July 11, 2000, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate, and burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Severy Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Hurt was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Howard, to Mary (Anderson) and Harve Hubbell. She attended school in the Howard community.
On March 27, 1937, she married Joshua Wooden "Woodie" Hurt in Eureka. They farmed south of Severy for many years. In 1955 Hurt began working for Harvey's Grocery in Severy and was later employed at Peyton's Grocery. She was a cook at the Severy school for several years and also worked at Severy Locker.
In 1991 the Hurts entered Howard Twilight Manor. Her husband died July 2, 1991.
Hurt was a member of the Severy Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Max Hurt, Douglass, and Ted Hurt, Ralston, Neb.; a daughter, Betty Colwell, Moundridge; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Matthew Thielen
ARKANSAS CITY - Matthew P. Thielen, 76, of Arkansas City, died July 9, 2000, at his home.
The Rosary will be said tonight at 7 at Hawks Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
Thielen was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Alton, Ill., to Margaret Agnes (Carl) and Mathias Phillip Thielen. When he was three years old, the family moved to Salina where he graduated from high school in 1941. He later attended the University of Colorado.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman second class aboard the USS Hughes under Admiral A.D. Strubel. He was stationed in the Philippines and the South Pacific and received a letter of commendation from the admiral.
Thielen married Esther Marie Miracle on Sept. 18, 1946, in Salina. They moved to Arkansas City in 1959.
Thielen worked at Reed Chevrolet in El Dorado and was office manager of A.L. Short Motors in Arkansas City. He worked as an inspector for General Electric at Strother Field for 17 years until his retirement in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Thielen, Arkansas City; three daughters, Nancy Lois Ross and Laura Lee Stevenson, both of Arkansas City, and Carmen Louise Shrope, Spencer, Ind.; five sons, David Lynn Thielen, Hamilton Louis Thielen, Stuart Laurence Thielen and Joseph Leonard Thielen, all of Arkansas City, and Robert Leon Thielen, Winfield; a brother, Bernard C. Thielen, Salina; 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Mary Lou Thielen, preceded him in death.
Esther Heffel
RUSSELL - Esther M. Heffel, 87, lifelong resident of Russell, died July 12, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell. The Rev. Terry West will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church in Russell.
Heffel was born Aug. 5, 1912, in Russell, to Amelia (Ebel) and Floyd Fink. She graduated from Russell High School.
On Sept. 5, 1932, she married Edward R. Heffel in Lyons. He died Jan. 1, 1984.
Heffel worked as a dental assistant, as a nurse's aide at Russell City Hospital and at local movie theaters for many years. She was also the bookkeeper for her husband's business.
She was a member of the Russell Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Heffel Jr., Winfield; two brothers, Marvin Fink and Dale Fink, both of Russell; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mildred Lundy
HAYS - Mildred L. Lundy, 87, of Hays, formerly of Burden and Winfield, died July 11, 2000, at Hays Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Hays Good Samaritan Center Special Care Unit. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Lundy was born July 26, 1912, on a farm near Dexter, to Loucina Alice (Searle) and Charlie E. Radcliff. She was educated in Dexter area schools and graduated from Dexter High School in 1930.
On Aug. 10, 1930, she married Leslie G. Newlin in Burden. They later divorced.
She was employed at the Dexter post office.
On Dec. 1, 1952, she married Clayton Lundy in Winfield. He died Aug. 21, 1958.
Lundy was a dental assistant for Dr. Robert Olson in Winfield before moving to Ness City where she was a medical secretary and assistant for Dr. Weins. She then moved to LaCrosse where she began working for her son-in-law, Roger Gray, as secretary/bookkeeper for RAG Motors. She retired in 1984.
Lundy was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in LaCrosse, the Order of Eastern Star which she served as worthy matron in 1940 and the Ness County Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Gray, Hays; two stepsons, Bob Lundy and Jim Lundy, both of Burden; nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
