Peggy Thompson
ARKANSAS CITY - Peggy J. Thompson, 67, of Arkansas City, died June 15, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Arkansas City. Private burial services will be held in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.
Thompson was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Arkansas City, to Juanita May (Louthan) and Cecil O. Rogers. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1951.
On April 6, 1953, she married Ira Thompson in Arkansas City.
Thompson was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses and a lifelong resident of Arkansas City. She had been a clerk at the Woolworth's store and had worked in the mail room of the Arkansas City Traveler and as a carrier for the Traveler and the Wichita Eagle.
Survivors include her husband, Ira Thompson, a son, Steven Thompson, a daughter, Sandra Tull, a foster sister, Cheryl Ely, and two grandchildren, all of Arkansas City.
Harold Cadwell
Harold D. Cadwell, 80, of 613 E. 34th, Winfield, died June 16, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, west of Winfield.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Cadwell was born Dec. 27, 1919, to Kathleen (Brooks) and Earl Cadwell. He was educated at Easterly School, west of Winfield, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1938.
During World War II he served in the United States Air Force in the Aleutian Islands. Following discharge he returned to Winfield and began farming.
On March 29, 1991, he married Helen Jordan at the First Baptist Church. They made their home in Winfield.
Cadwell was a member of the First Baptist Church and past president of the Kellogg Farmers Union.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Cadwell, Winfield; a son, Christopher Cadwell, Winston, N.M.; a daughter, Connie Bradford, Winfield; a stepdaughter, Twila Jordan, New Orleans; two stepsons, Randy Jordan, Latham, and Leland Jordan, White House, Tenn.; a sister, Ruth Curtis, Brooksville, Fla.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Lillie Davis
POND CREEK, Okla. - Lillie Alice Davis, 97, of Pond Creek, died June 16, 2000, at St. Mary's Mercy Hospital in Enid, Okla.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. June 19 at the Pond Creek First Baptist Church. The Revs. Brett McKee and Bobby Smith officiated. Burial was in Pond Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church and Medford Nursing Home may be made through Wilson Funeral Home.
Davis was born Dec. 18, 1902, near Jefferson, Okla., to Mary Elizabeth (Snyder) and Otto Oscar Davis. She had polio at age 2 and learned to walk at age 4. She attended Riverdale grade school near Jefferson and Jefferson High School and graduated from Pond Creek High School in 1921. She attended Phillips University for one year.
For 26 years Davis taught in rural Grant County schools. She later moved to Ponca City where she worked at OK Wreath Co. and became part-owner. She returned to Pond Creek after retirement and moved to Medford Nursing Home in 1989.
Davis was a member of the First Baptist Church in Medford and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Pond Creek.
Survivors include two sisters, Millie Collins, Oxford, and Goldie Jenkins, Harleysville, Pa.
Ray Dellinger
HOWARD - Levi Ray Dellinger, 92, longtime resident of rural Howard, died June 16, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday in Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate, and Lloyd G. Zimmerman will sing "Amazing Grace."
Memorials have been established with the Howard United Methodist Church and Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Dellinger was born Dec. 2, 1907, in Hutchinson, to Birdie Mae (Wilcoxen) and David Hottle Dellinger. He attended school in the Hutchinson community.
On April 27, 1930, he married Esta Lizzie "Elizabeth" Kingsley in Hutchinson.
Dellinger worked at a flour mill and an ice plant in Hutchinson before moving his family to a farm northeast of Howard in 1941. He farmed there for many years.
In 1951 he began reporting Elk County weather conditions to the United States Weather Service. He continued this service until entering Howard Twilight Manor in 1997.
Dellinger was a member of the Antioch Methodist Church, which later consolidated with Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Dellinger, Howard; a son, Jerry Dellinger, Haysville; two grandsons and three stepgrandchildren.
Dennis Waldorf
ARKANSAS CITY - Dennis Keith Waldorf, 63, lifelong resident of Arkansas City, died June 16, 2000, in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Arkansas City Literacy Council, in care of Central Christian Church, 206 W. Central, Arkansas City, KS 67005.
Waldorf was born July 8, 1936, in Dexter, to Naomi E. (Day) and William I. Waldorf. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954 and attended Cowley County Community College and Kansas State University.
On April 27, 1991, he married Jeanne Endicott Elswick in Arkansas City.
Waldorf was a bail bondsman and former owner of Waldorf Manufacturing Co. At one time he ranched and raised Brangus cattle. In earlier years he had worked as an insurance claims adjuster and operated a collection business.
He was a member of the PBUS bail bondsman organization and the local steam engine club. He was a former member of the Kansas National Guard and various civic organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Waldorf, Arkansas City; two sons, Chris Waldorf, Arkansas City, and Cory Elswick, Manhattan; two daughters, LaReina Schmitt, Winfield, and Cari Griggs, Sedan; his mother, Naomi Waldorf, and a sister, JoLeta Riley, both of Arkansas City, a brother, Melvin Waldorf, Tulsa; and seven grandchildren.
Mildred Wefers
BURDEN - Services for Mildred Louise (Peninger) Wefers were held at 10:30 a.m. June 6, 2000, in Burden Cemetery. Gary Fox officiated.
Casket bearers were Darrell Black, Kevin Boline, Jon Cannon, Ron Cannon, John Mull, Dale Phillips and Tony Rohr.
A memorial has been established with Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
JoAnn White
WICHITA - JoAnn L. White, 40, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died June 15, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.
Services were at 11 a.m. June 19 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ellen Foster officiated. Cremation followed.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
White was born Dec. 8, 1959, in Winfield, to Ruth (Ritchie) and John J. Smith. She graduated from Winfield High School and attended Cowley County Community College.
White was a homemaker.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth Smith, and her father, John J. Smith, both of Winfield; her fiance, Darrell Davis, Wichita; and two brothers, John J. Smith Jr. and David G. Smith, both of Winfield.
Joseph Elam
Joseph Daniel "Joe" Elam, 64, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died June 18, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Elam was born Nov. 18, 1935, in Winfield, to Della (Bullins) and Daniel S. Elam. He was raised in Winfield, graduated from Winfield High School and attended Cowley County Community College and Hutchinson Community College.
He worked as a certified nurse's assistant at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for over 25 years. Most recently he had been a driver for Pizza Hut delivery.
Elam was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Della Marie Elam, Peabody, and Jodean Elam, Macksville; a sister, Patricia Rockhold, Arkansas City; and five brothers, Harley Elam, Wichita, Earl Elam, Hinesville, Ga., Herbert Elam, Kansas City, Mo., Arthur Elam, Lincoln, Mo., and Wayne Elam, St. Joseph, Mo.
A daughter, Claudine, preceded him in death.
