Greg Goodier
TOPEKA - Greg Goodier, 52, of Topeka, died March 27, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Oxford Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Goodier was born Sept. 16, 1947, in Wichita, to LaVeta Jean (Kelly) and Walter Gene "Hank" Goodier. In 1953 the family moved to Oxford where he graduated from high school. He later attended Emporia State College.
During the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Army.
On Dec. 31, 1969, he married Katherine Marie Crosbie in Everett, Wash. They had lived in Topeka for the past 23 years.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Goodier, two sons, Chris Goodier and Paul Goodier, and a daughter, Cindy Goodier, all of Topeka; two brothers, Kerry Goodier, Overland Park, and Walter Goodier, Seattle; and two grandchildren.
Audine Gray
Audine Gray, 93, of 1316 Menor, Winfield, died March 28, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until noon Friday.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Gray was born Aug. 5, 1906, at Latham, to Belephina (Mizner) and James A. Brown. She moved to Vinton in 1909 and at the age of 13 to Winfield. She lived in Niotaze for two years, then returned to Winfield where she attended Winfield High School.
On March 28, 1928, she married Dean L. Gray in Chetopa. They lived in Howard from 1943 to 1983, then returned to Winfield where Gray was a homemaker. Her husband died Jan. 25, 1987.
Survivors include five daughters, Ruby Cook, Cleveland, Okla., Betty Jo Callahan and Rosemary Floyd, both of Liberal, Barbara Bialecki Burrell, Wichita, and Patricia Proctor, Hominy, Okla.; four sons, Roy Dean Gray, Hominy, Okla., Willis Gray, Wichita, Eddie Gray, Osage, Okla., and Benny Paul Gray, Winfield; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pauline Herbers
Pauline Maxine Herbers, 78, of Winfield, died March 28, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
A Rosary service will be held tonight at 7:30 at Miles Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church's building fund. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Herbers was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Wann, Okla., to Gertrude (Moon) and Anthony Frischenmeyer. After living in Coffeyville, the family moved to Winfield in 1927. She attended Frog Hollow, Maple Grove and Olive grade schools. Then the family moved to Mulvane, and she graduated from Independent School and from St. Mary's Cathedral High School in Wichita in 1939.
On Oct. 8, 1940, she married Sylvester Beda Herbers in Wichita where they made their home. In 1951 they moved to a farm 10 miles southeast of Winfield. Her husband died Dec. 10, 1985.
Herbers was employed by Snyder Clinic, Dr. William Barr and Winfield State Hospital and Training Center before retiring in 1989.
She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Holy Name Altar Society.
Survivors include four sons, Larry Herbers, Topeka, Don Herbers, Leoti, Tom Herbers, Scott City, and Chuck Herbers, Winfield; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A son, Robert Michael Herbers, died Jan. 4, 1950.
Nina Shaver
Services for Nina Helena Shaver were held at 1:30 p.m. March 29, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.
Barbara Shively was the organist. Music included "Life's Railway to Heaven" and "In the Garden."
Casket bearers were Art Ankrom, Ron Cooley, Don Hartpence, Gary Miller, George Parsons, Ralph Russell, Don Stephens and Larry Stephens.
A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church.
Leona Stiner
Leona Marie Stiner, 93, of Winfield, died March 28, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday.
A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Stiner was born June 14, 1906, at Dexter, to Minnie (Graham) and Benjamin Stiner. She was raised in the Cambridge and Winfield areas.
Stiner lived in Hutchinson in the 1940s and then in California for three years. In the 1950s she returned to Winfield where she was a housekeeper for many families. She also took care of some rental property.
Stiner was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Opal Robinson, and a sister-in-law, Irene Stiner, both of Winfield.
Edythe Benson
OVERLAND PARK - Edythe Caroline Ovedia Benson, 89, of Overland Park, formerly of Winfield, died March 29, 2000, at St. Joseph Health Care Center in Kansas City, Mo.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield.
Friends may visit from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Miles Funeral Service.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church.
Benson was born Aug. 14, 1910, in St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, Wis., to Clara and Henry Bosland.
A homemaker and volunteer, She was a Girl Scout leader in Council Grove, taught Sunday school and directed the children's choir at Trinity Lutheran Church in Abilene.
She and her husband, John Milton Benson, moved to Winfield in 1955. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as a deacon, was active in the Presbyterian Women's Organization and served on the evangelism committee. She was a member of P.E.O., Entre Nous and the Worthwhile Club.
Her husband preceded her in death. The Bensons were married 52 years.
Survivors include two sons, Noel Benson, St. Peters Mo., and Bob Benson, Overland Park; a sister, Zona Pease, Burbank, Calif.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Judy Johnson
Judy Johnson, 59, of 1922 E. 14th, Winfield, died at her home March 30, 2000.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight.
Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church, the Winfield Municipal Band and the Southwestern College Music Department.
Johnson was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Wichita, to Rosa (Hart) and Harry Sippel. She was raised and educated in Kiowa and graduated from high school there. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education from Wichita State University.
On July 9, 1961, she married Frank Johnson in Kiowa.
Johnson taught music and gave private lessons in Belle Plaine from 1961 to 1978. In 1978 they moved to Winfield where she gave private piano lessons until her illness.
Johnson was a member of the Walnut Valley Piano Teachers Association, Belle Plaine chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Mu Phi music sorority and the Winfield Municipal Band. She was a former member of the Kansas chapter of the National Education Association.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Johnson, Winfield; a son, Brian Johnson, Denver; a daughter, Kimberly Johnson, Wichita; and two grandsons.
Richard Jacobs
SEVERY - Richard Paul Jacobs, 85, of Severy, died March 29, 2000, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Severy United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Gary Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery
in Severy.
Memorials have been established with the Severy United Methodist Church and the Severy Senior Center. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Jacobs was born April 18, 1914, on a farm northeast of Eureka, to Lucy (Bromagen) and Antone Henry Jacobs. He attended rural Greenwood County schools and graduated from Severy High School.
On Aug. 29, 1937, he married Kathleen Lucille Stonebraker in Howard. They made their home on a farm west of Severy.
He began employment at Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita in 1948. In 1951 he began working for Morton Equipment Co. in Severy and remained there until starting Jacobs' Repair in Severy in 1958. He worked several years for Cessna Aircraft Co. in Wichita and retired from Cessna in 1979. During most of his life, he was also a farmer and rancher.
Mrs. Jacobs died April 26, 1991, from injuries resulting from tornado damage to their farm home.
On Aug. 30, 1992, he married Ruby Elizabeth (Herndon) Rexroat in Severy where they made their home.
He was a member of the Severy United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Jacobs, Severy; three sons, Paul Jacobs, Milan, Henry Jacobs, Wichita, and Cecil Jacobs, Augusta; two daughters, Joyce Doane, Severy, and Ruth Gordon, Winfield; a stepson, Raymond Rexroat, Newton; three stepdaughters, Ruth Warren, Attica, Pat Townsend, Orlando, Fla., and Wanda Knight, McPherson; 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild; six stepgrandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
