Fern Brewer
LATHAM - Fern E. Brewer, 89, of Latham, died March 15, 2000, at an El Dorado nursing home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m Saturday at the Latham United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Latham Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Beaumont Water Tower project and the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through Kirby-Morris Funeral Home of El Dorado.
Brewer was born Dec. 15, 1910, near Wellington, to Vesta (Shay) and John A. Spohr. She lived in the Latham and Beaumont area all her life.
On Dec. 20, 1927, she married Fred E. Brewer in Beaumont. He died July 9, 1968.
A homemaker, she drove a school bus for Latham schools and owned and operated Latham General Store for 15 years.
Brewer was a member of the United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star which she served as secretary and worthy matron.
Survivors include three sons: James Brewer and Jack Brewer, both of Latham, and John Brewer, Beaumont; two sisters, Ruth Woodward, Arkansas City, and Ethel Mae Manning, Friech, Texas; seven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Earl Olmstead
Services for Earl Lee Olmstead were held at 2 p.m. March 17, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Ninnescah Cemetery.
Victor Olmstead played his guitar and sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Honorary casket bearers were Lila Guyot, Dorothy and George Hatfield, Lois Mitchell, Edith Nixon, Phyllis Wakefield and Quintin and Naida Waples.
Casket bearers were Bill Dunnell, Keith Grant, Kent and Victor Olmstead, Warren Sickles and Marvin Wells.
A memorial has been established with the Winfield Senior Center.
Hazel Reed
CEDAR VALE - Services for Hazel Ellen Mattocks Reed were held at 2 p.m. March 16, 2000, in Round Mound Cemetery
at Cedar Vale. Charles S. Evans officiated.
Vocal music included "One Day at a Time" and "Amazing Grace." Casket bearers were her grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Cannon-Armstrong
Ruth Ada Cannon-Armstrong, 99, of Winfield, died March 18, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Art Hays will officiate. Burial will be in Janesville Cemetery
at Hamilton.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Cannon-Armstrong was born June 7, 1900, in the Rueda District of Greenwood County, to Ella (Spain) and Frank Wiggins. She attended the Rueda school.
On March 3, 1920, she married James Alvin Cannon in Eureka. They made their home in Greenwood County. He died Feb. 18, 1969.
On May 14, 1974, she married Virgil Armstrong in Emporia where they made their home until his death Sept. 11, 1986.
In 1986 she moved to Rock to live with her daughter, and in 1997 she moved to Winfield.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Hamilton Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Thompson, Rock; a son John Cannon, Pawhuska, Okla.; a sister, Nellie Rose, Waco, Texas; a brother, Albert Wiggins, Eureka; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
John Hawkins
John F. Hawkins, 75, of Winfield, died March 18, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
A military memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. His body was donated to the University of Kansas School of Medicine for research.
Memorials have been established with the World War II Veterans Memorial, the Army Emergency Relief Fund and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Hawkins was born July 6, 1924, in Sunburst, N.C., to Amelia (Sparks) and John Hawkins. He graduated from high school in Sykesville, Md., in 1941.
A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served with the U.S. Army as a first sergeant for 23 years, based out of Fort Sill, Okla. He received many awards, including the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.
Hawkins then moved to Perkins, Okla., and was employed at Delmar's as a butcher. He later attended Draughon's School of Business in Oklahoma City.
In 1960 he married Kay Brake in Stillwater, Okla. They later divorced.
In 1977 he married Katherine Henderson in Westminster, Md. The couple lived in Westminster, where he worked for Carroll County Hospital as an engineer. His wife died in 1986.
Hawkins then returned to Stillwater. He moved to Winfield last year.
He was a member of American Legion Post 31 in Westminster, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 of Winfield, the American Red Cross and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane Gatewood, Winfield; five sons, Roy Hawkins, Gordonville, Texas, Ray Hawkins, Weatherford, Okla., John Hawkins, Oklahoma City, Bruce Hawkins, Gainesville, Fla., and Tony Hawkins, Weleetka, Okla.; two brothers, Hartzel Hawkins, Sykesville, and Clarence Hawkins, Westminster; a sister, Margaret Ridgley, Sykesville; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Allen Nelson
Allen N. Nelson, 83, longtime Winfield farmer, died March 19, 2000, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Clearwater Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Nelson was born Feb. 16, 1917, on a farm near Clearwater, to Lola (Bowman) and William C. Nelson. He was educated in Clearwater.
On Aug. 9, 1941, he married Earlene Long at Bella Vista, Ark. They lived in Clearwater until Oct. 28, 1947, when they moved to a farm north of Winfield. His wife died Oct. 20, 1969.
Nelson retired from Boeing on March 1, 1982.
On June 24, 1989, he married Winnie Howard.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Winnie Nelson, Winfield; a son, Randy Nelson, Atlanta; three daughters, Judy Nelson, Janice Wells and Lori Fleenor, all of Winfield; a brother, Roy Nelson, Alamosa, Colo.; a sister, Aileen McQuillen, Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mildred Detter
Iva Mildred Detter, 95, of Winfield, died March 17, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Forrest Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Cumbernauld Village Van Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Detter was born Nov. 26, 1904, in Grenola, to Effie (Fletcher) and Joseph J. Marshall. She graduated from Grenola High School at 16 years of age and began her teaching career at 17 in the Grenola area. She attended Southwestern College in 1927.
On July 31, 1930, she married Harry E. Detter in Winfield. He died Oct. 9, 1965.
She continued to teach in the Udall, Oxford and Winfield area during her marriage. Shortly after her husband's death, she returned to Southwestern and graduated. She retired in 1969.
Detter was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and Chapter CU of P.E.O. and a past member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, all of Winfield.
Survivors include a son, Marshall Detter, Winfield; two daughters, Carol Falen, Lawrence, and Janis Flick, Winfield; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Dale Arbuckle
GRENOLA - Alfred Dale Arbuckle, 81, of rural Grenola, died March 19, 2000, at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Grenola United Methodist Church. Jim Sweet and the Rev. Don Foster will officiate. Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 will conduct military services. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the Greenfield Township Board. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Arbuckle was born Dec. 7, 1918, on a farm near Grenola, to Martha Marie (Liebau) and John Mason Arbuckle.
He graduated from Grenola High School in 1937 and attended Emporia State College for a short time. In 1938 he moved to Fresno, Calif., where he attended Fresno City College. He was a member of the National Guard before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. He was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco and later at Fort Sheridan in Illinois.
On Dec. 4, 1943, he married Kathryn Eileen Whelehon in Highland Park, Ill. In 1944 they moved to Detroit where they lived until moving to Jackson, Tenn. They moved to Arkansas City in 1949 and to their farm northwest of Grenola in 1953. He was a self-employed farmer and rancher for most of his life.
Arbuckle was a member of the advisory board of the Valley Hope Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 of Moline and the Grenola United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Arbuckle, and a son, Jon Mark Arbuckle, both of Grenola; a daughter, Deborah Stonehocker, Hendersonville, Tenn.; a stepsister, Helen Murphy, Fresno, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
