Daisy Nichols
OXFORD - Daisy Priscilla Nichols, 92, of Oxford, retired co-owner of Nichols Conoco and the Hideout Resort of Oxford, died Feb. 29, 2000, at the Andover Health Care Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. Pastors Curtis Fike and David Lemke will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at Day Funeral Home, 1030 Mission Road, Wellington, from 5 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church, 113 E. Myrtle, Oxford, KS 67119.
Nichols was born Oct. 7, 1907, in Robinson, to Emma Savilla (Botterger) and Melvile Swaim.
On Sept. 1, 1928, she married John Paul Nichols in Oxford. He died Dec. 18, 1983.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Rose Marie Hankins, Topeka; a brother, Francis Swaim, Geuda Springs; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A son, Melvin Silas Nichols, preceded her in death.
Alice Hammer
Services for Alice M. Hammer were held at 11 a.m. March 2, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.
June Vasey was the organist, and Keith Anglemyer sang "O Rest in the Lord," "Amazing Grace" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Honorary casket bearers were Jim Booth, Bobby Brenner, Linus Brungardt, Steve Johnson, Susan Topper, Marilyn Watt, Neil Watt, Randall Watt and Paul Wesley.
Casket bearers were Linda Watt Booth, Kathy Watt Johnson, Timothy G.E. Hammer, Katherine Hammer Walker, Alissa Hammer, Leah Hammer, Evelyn Hammer, Brian Booth and Erik Johnson.
Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and Cumbernauld Village.
Edward Shisler
WICHITA - Edward P. Shishler, 85, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died March 1, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Roger Beason will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
A memorial has been established with Gideons International.
Shisler was born June 8, 1914, in Lamar, Mo.
He was employed by Boeing before his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Shisler, and a son, Edward W. Shisler, both of Wichita; a daughter, Margaret Slonaker, Vassar; a sister, Hazel Noonan, Wichita; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Oliver Darby
EUREKA - Oliver Edward Darby, 101, formerly of Moline, died March 3, 2000, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Pastor Ted Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery
at Grenola.
A memorial has been established with the Moline Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Darby was born April 7, 1898, in Gentry County, Mo., to Jessie (Best) and James Oliver Darby. He attended school in Missouri.
Darby married Gladys Sane and later Mildred Kilore. After that marriage ended, he married Rilla (Stockdale) Dinger. She died May 9, 1984. On March 11, 1985, he married Bessie Henry. She died July 28, 1990.
For more than 40 years, he worked as a cowboy for the Ferguson Ranch near Woodward, Okla., and was later employed at their ranch west of Grenola. He broke horses and worked cattle as long as his health permitted.
Darby had been a resident of Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline until moving to Medicalodge of Eureka.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Cowan, Woodward, Okla.; and a brother, Hugh Darby, Yuma, Ariz.
His daughter, Evelyn, and two sons, George Darby and Howard Darby, preceded him in death.
Laura Gomez
HOWARD - Laura R. Gomez, 22, of rural Howard, died March 1, 2000, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
A Rosary service was held at 7 p.m. March 5 at Zimmerman Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. March 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. The Rev. Edward J. Steinberger officiated. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery
in Moline.
The Laura Gomez Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of her son. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Gomez was born Sept. 13, 1977, in San Angelo, Texas, to Jacovita (Rodriguez) and Fabian P. Gomez. When she was a child she moved with her family to Elk County and graduated from West Elk High School in Howard.
She was an employee of Wal-Mart and attending cosmetology college in Wichita.
Survivors include a son, Armando Jose Gomez, and her parents, Fabian and Jacovita Gomez, all of Howard; her sisters, Erica Seimears, Howard, and Vicky Gomez, Manhattan; her brothers, Martin Deanda Jr., Waco, Texas, and Antonio Gomez, Independence; and her grandparents, Jacoba Garcia, Center, Texas, and Rosalio Rodriguez, San Angelo, Texas.
Jinnie Ritter
DOUGLASS - Jinnie V. Ritter, 82, of Douglass, died March 3, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
A family service will be held in the Brashears, Ark., cemetery. Petersen Funeral Home of Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
Ritter was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Sunset, Ark., to Adeline (Malone) and Andrew Orman.
On July 10, 1937, she married Frank Oxier in Springdale, Ark. After they divorced, she married Clarence Ritter in Arkansas. He died in July 1982.
She attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Derby.
Survivors include two daughters, Violet M. Williamson, Douglass, and Bess Myers, Wichita; and two sisters, Lizzie Watkins and Edna Blair, both of Prairie Grove, Ark.
Louise Stanley-Smith
ATLANTA - H. Louise Stanley-Smith, 81, of Atlanta, retired homemaker, died March 3, 2000, at her home.
Services and burial were held at 2 p.m. March 6 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
Stanley-Smith was born July 15, 1918, at Goddard, to Margaret (Jones) and Samuel Elmer Pipkin.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jean "Teddy" Gahr, Lawton, Okla.; a sister, Eva Kisner, Wichita; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Garold Dean Stanley, preceded her in death.
Patricia Harper
SEVERY - Patricia Inez "Patty" Harper, 66, of rural Severy, died March 5, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery
north of Howard.
A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Harper was born April 13, 1933, in Laverne, Okla., to Inez Corrine (White) and Joseph Hiram Smith. She attended school in Harper County, Okla.
On March 19, 1949, she married James Fleming Harper III in Perryton, Texas. They lived in Texas and Oklahoma but made their home in Kansas most of their lives. Her husband died Dec. 7, 1999.
A homemaker, she was briefly employed at various jobs outside the home. A longtime member of the Severy Baptist Church, she played piano there for many years.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Peters, Pryor, Okla., Karen Werner, Grove, Okla., and Tricia Seimears, Howard; a son, James F. Harper IV, Lawrence; three sisters, Nellie Morgan, Moore, Okla., Juanita Griswold, Augusta, and Karen Huckabay, Hydro, Okla.; five brothers, Harold Smith, Okeene, Okla., Wayne Smith, Laverne, Okla., John Smith, Colorado Springs, Terry Smith, Guyman, Okla., and Jim Smith, Shawnee, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
