Gladys Clason
ARKANSAS CITY - Gladys M. Clason, 96, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 9, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hawks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery
at Ashton.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the Central Christian Church Building Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Clason was born Jan. 11, 1903, in Blackwell, to William Payton and Rosa May (Nyhart) Ash. She lived in Atchison and Willow Springs, Mo., before moving to Woodward, Okla., in 1914. She attended school in Wellington and Alva, Okla., where she received a teaching certificate.
On Nov. 7, 1925, she married Roy Raymond Clason in Mooreland, Okla. She taught in rural schools for several years before moving to the Ashton community in 1927. The Clasons operated the New Era Mill in Ashton for several years. Her husband died Sept. 23, 1970.
Clason moved to Arkansas City in 1981.
She was a member of Ashton Christian Church and later Central Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Messner, Arkansas City, and Carol White, Wellington; a sister, Mary Crane, Arkansas City, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Philip French
ARKANSAS CITY - Philip E. French, 59, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 6, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Arkansas City. A private inurnment service was held in Springside Cemetery. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
French was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Carthage, Mo., to Granville William and Medah (Tarvin) French. The family moved to Arkansas City in 1944 and later to Wichita where he graduated from West High School.
In 1962 he married Gwen Sailor in Arvada, Colo.
On March 27, 1982, he married Marsha Blevens in Winfield. He had worked in the grocery business for 20 years. While living in Tahlequah, Okla., he worked at Reasor's Grocery. In 1995 they moved to Arkansas City where he worked at Dillons. For the last year, he had worked at the Comfort Inn in Winfield.
French served as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses for 42 years and had been an elder of the local congregation for many years.
He was an award-winning artist, including at the Denton Art Center's "Barn Again!" competition. He was also the author of "Phil's World Phantom Cartoonist" for the Summit Up weekly newspaper in Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife, Marsha French, Arkansas City; a daughter, Justine Brewer, Colorado Springs; a stepson, Tyrone Spielman, Emporia, two stepdaughters, Sonyia Mantz, Wichita, and Denise Miller, Winfield; two brothers, Robert G. French and James J. French, both of Oxford; three sisters, Jesselyn Rice Goosetree, Palm Desert, Calif., Katheryn Simonson, Tulsa, and Alice McCormick, Tahlequah, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.
Elva Brokaw
ARKANSAS CITY - Elva P. Brokaw, 82, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 10, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
Chapel with Pastor Mark McDonald officiating.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
Brokaw was born April 24, 1917, at Clinton, Okla., to John Lester and Erma Leola (McKnight) King. She moved to Arkansas City as a child, attended schools there and lived there the rest of her life.
On July 1, 1973, she married Gail Beniah Brokaw in Arkansas City.
Brokaw was a longtime member of the Church of God-Holiness and Old-Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers.
Survivors include her husband, Gail Brokaw, Arkansas City; two sisters, Ruby Lillian Heskett, Wichita, and Dorothy Ruth Gregg, Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandsons.
A daughter, Mary Jo Voorhees Tewell, preceded her in death.
Clarice Englis
ARKANSAS CITY - Clarice I. Englis, 89, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 11, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Central Christian Church with the Rev. Steve Chambers officiating. A private inurnment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Englis was born April 17, 1910, in Beaver County, Okla., in a sod house. When she was a child the family moved to Arkansas City where she graduated from high school.
In July 1933 she married Frank L. Englis in Missouri. They moved to California in 1940 and returned to Arkansas City in 1946.
Englis had been a secretary for the director of nursing at the Arkansas City hospital.
She also had been a member of Central Christian Church.
Her husband died July 22, 1979.
Survivors include a son, Don Wayne Englis, Tulsa; a daughter, Janice Elaine Jordan, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Waldo Gray
HOWARD - Waldo Ernest Gray, 79, longtime Howard resident, died Jan. 10, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Howard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kibum Kim officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Gray was born June 18, 1920, north of Howard to Asmar and Beyrl Jannett (Earnst) Gray. He attended Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1941.
Gray served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
On Oct. 18, 1944, he married Neva Jean Bennett at Emporia, and they resided in Howard.
Gray owned and operated Waldo's Barber Shop in Howard for more than 50 years.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1186, Independence; Kansas Barber Association; American Legion Carter-Rader Post 149, Howard; Howard Chamber of Commerce and Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Gray, Howard; a son, John Gray, Towanda; a daughter, Trudy Dilli, Wichita; a brother, Jack Gray, Howard; a sister, Reba Ashley, Fredonia; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Marjorie Olinger
ARKANSAS CITY - Marjorie Z. Olinger, 82, of Arkansas City, died at her home prior to Jan. 9, 2000.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday.
Olinger was born July 31, 1917, in Arkansas City to Robert Guy and Christina Idell (Reynolds) Criss. She attended Arkansas City schools and lived in that city all her life.
On July 21, 1937, she married Charles Ellis Olinger in Arkansas City.
Survivors include her husband, Ellis Olinger, Arkansas City, and a sister, Vera Aleshire, Oklahoma City.
A son, Randall Lynn Olinger, preceded her in death.
Bernice Talady
SHENANDOAH, Iowa - Bernice E. Talady, 78, of Shenandoah, formerly of Winfield, died Dec 31, 1999, at Garden View Care Center.
Services were held Jan. 4, 2000, at Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home. The Rev. Marcia Gilbert officiated. Burial was Jan. 10 in Pleasant Hill Memorial Gardens, Calhoun County, W.Va.
Talady was born June 21, 1921, in Glenville, W.Va., to Elmer Ellsworth and Malinda Elizabeth (Yoke) Stewart.
In 1940 she married Earl Everett Gordon in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Winfield.
She later married Harry Talady and moved to Iowa.
Survivors include three sons, Earl Edward Gordon, Winfield, Jim Gordon, Belton, Mo., and Virgil Gordon, Pratt; and four daughters, Sharon Cluster, Belle Plaine, Karen O'Dell, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Betty Stiverson, Clarinda, Iowa, and Judy Talady, Glenwood, Iowa.
Dora Brown
BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Dora Settle Brown, 100, of Bentonville, died Dec. 29, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare in Rogers, Ark.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 4, 2000, in the Bentonville Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Bokker officiated. Memorials have been established with St. Mary's Hospice, 1200 W. Walnut, Rogers, AR 72756.
Brown was born May 26, 1899, in Cedar Vale, to Rush J. and Anna Martha (Thompson) Steward. She graduated from Emporia State Normal Teachers College.
Between 1934 and 1940 she lived in Centerton, Ark., before moving to Bentonville where she was co-owner and office manager of Settle's Hatchery in Bentonville and Centerton where they sold baby chicks and feed.
She was active in the Bentonville First United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, T. Bryant Settle, in 1950, and her second husband, Leigh F. Brown, in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Donald Settle, Dallas; a stepson, Harvey Brown, Tulsa; two granddaughters, a stepgranddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
Carla Endorf
Carla R. Endorf, 41, of Winfield, died Jan. 10, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 12, 2000, at Memorial Lawn Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangments.
Endorf was born April 3, 1958, in Arkansas City to William and Ruth Endorf. She lived at the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center from 1982 until moving to her home in Winfield in 1997.
Endorf is survived by her mother, Ruth Endorf, Arkansas City; and two sisters, Donna Londeen, Wichita, and Diane Johnson, Woodlands, Texas.
