William Ballinger
ARKANSAS CITY - William Ballinger, 75, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 9, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Ballinger was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Derby, to Roy and Farie (Schamp) Ballinger. He was raised and educated in the Derby area.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the European and Pacific theaters.
On Dec. 24, 1949, he married Wanda C. Umbarger in Wellington. They lived in Colorado and later moved to Oklahoma. In 1963 they moved to Arkansas City.
Ballinger was a farmer and during the 1960s worked for Boeing Co. in Wichita. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Ballinger, and a son, William Craig Ballinger, both of Arkansas City; two daughters, Janet Berg, Arkansas City, and Rebecca Cale, Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada; three brothers, Wesley Ballinger, Wichita, Alford Ballinger, Colwich, and Loren Ballinger, Swansea, S.C.; two sisters, Bessie Lou Burris, Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Lefors, Wichita; and eight grandchildren.
Maxine Demaree
Services for Maxine Demaree, 80, who died Nov. 7, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Thomas Mitchell officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Special music included "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Russell Harris, Justin Pettit, Dow Spengler, Rick Spengler, Jim True and Chris Walker.
A memorial has been established with Praise Cathedral Church of God.
Tillie Hege
NEWTON - Tillie Margaret Hege, 98, of Newton, died Nov. 8, 1999, at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian Manor or Bethel College.
Hege was born July 13, 1901, in Arlington, to Edgar and Amalia (Miller) Ewy.
On Dec. 25, 1930, she married Edgar Jacob Hege in Halstead. He died in 1964.
A teacher and a homemaker, Hege had been a member of the Oxford Christian Church and an extension homemaker unit. She moved to Newton in 1988.
Survivors include a son, E. Keith Hege, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Martha Berger, North Newton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A son, Norman Hege, preceded her in death.
Alice Elliott
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - Alice Leone Elliott, 86, of Port Orchard, formerly of Dexter, died Nov. 6, 1999, in Port Orchard after a long illness.
Burial was at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Fremont, Calif.
Elliott was born May 10, 1913, in Hoosier, to William and Myrtle (Davidson) Ghram. She was raised in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1929.
On Aug. 11, 1930, she married William Elliott in Newkirk.
Elliott was involved in the Order of Eastern Star and the Elks Lodge. In Sunnyvale, Calif., she spent many years with the Sparklers Majorette Corps and the Drum Sparks Drum Corps youth group. She was known to the young people as "Nana" Elliott.
She is survived by two daughters, Rita L. Hawn and Judith Arnett, both of Port Orchard; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Imogene Silvera.
Mary Findley
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary A. Findley, 94, who died Nov. 4, 1999, was celebrated at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Maybrier officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
The Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel.
Music selections were "Amazing Grace," "Ave Maria" and "On This Day, Beautiful Mother." Dorothy Groene was the organist, and Bill Chamberland was the song leader.
Casket bearers were Raymond Groene, Gerald Aistrup, Ernie Zanardi, Greg Kent, Ed Schauf and Ralph Weninger.
Theodore Davis
ELK FALLS - Theodore Junior "Dude" Davis, 74, died Nov. 12, 1999, at his home in Elk Falls.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard. Larry Gray will officiate, and burial will be Elk Falls Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Davis was born Aug. 19, 1925, at Sardis, Okla., to James Harold and Mary (Orand) Davis. He was a farmer and cowboy in Oklahoma until moving to California at the age of 18.
Davis helped his parents take care of their family by working in California during World War II. In 1947 he returned to Oklahoma where he was employed as a truck driver and horse trainer.
On Nov. 6, 1948, he married Sylvia Vialine Goforth in Paris, Texas. In 1950 they moved to Oklahoma City where Davis was employed in construction and worked for Wilson Packing Co. In 1953 they moved to Wichita where he worked for Cudahy Packing Co. until retiring in 1975 due to ill health.
After moving to Elk Falls in 1975, he worked with horses and also raised small animals and honey bees.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Davis, Elk Falls; a son, Michael Davis, Dodge City; two daughters, Winnie Aikens, Augusta, and Norma Beougher, Elk Falls; a brother, Roy Davis, Greenwood, Ark.; a sister, Alla Mae Brown, Sardis; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Charlie Coe
CEDAR VALE - Services for Charlie Coe, 91, who died Nov. 7, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. The Revs. Dois Nix and Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Shirley Brown was the organist. The County Line Singers, Lowell Hark, Don Cox, Dale Steward and Barry Harp, performed.
Honorary casket bearers were John Wall, Earl Kelly, Larmon Holroyd and Joe Walker.
Casket bearers were Paul Fulsom, Wilmer Stephenson, Jim Looman, Chet Hobart, Zeb Hart and Junior Pape.
A memorial was established with the American Cancer Society.
Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.
Clara Massey
DEXTER - Clara Massey, 79, of Dexter, died Nov. 9, 1999, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.
Rosary services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arkansas City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart with burial at 4 p.m. in Seltzer Cemetery
in Wichita.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with Grouse Valley Manor.
Massey was born July 14, 1920, in May Dale to John and Martha Trear. She was educated in May Dale schools. She then worked at Beech Aircraft Co. as a riveter.
On May 20, 1947, she married Lyle W. Massey in Wichita. The couple lived in Wichita, where she helped run Kansas Linen Service for 6 1/2 years. They moved to Topeka in 1968 and to the Dexter and Cedar Vale communities in 1976. She worked on the family's farm until moving to Grouse Valley Manor.
Massey was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Lyle W. Massey Sr., Dexter; two sons, Lyle W. Massey Jr., Dexter, and David L. Massey, Norcross, Ga.; a daughter, Deloris A. Massey, Wichita; two brothers, John Trear, Olpe, and Louis Trear, Madison; a sister, Bernadine Schultz, Emporia; 19 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
