Donna Spicer

HOWARD - Donna Marie Spicer, 58, homemaker, of Howard, died Sept. 4, 1999, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Howard.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Howard Independent Baptist Church. The Rev. J. Ray Sumner will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Howard Independent Baptist Church and the Brother Andrews "Open Doors Ministry." Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Spicer was born Sept. 16, 1940, in Brownstown, Ill., to Arthur and Reba (Chatham) Salmons.

On Aug. 20, 1958, she married Darrell Spicer in Shelbyville, Ill. To this union seven children were born. The family lived in locations in Illinois and Kansas before moving to Howard in 1995.

A son, Lyle Spicer, preceded his mother in death.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell Spicer, Howard; five sons, Leslie Spicer, Neodesha, Vincent Spicer and Evan Spicer, both of Valley Center, Clayton Spicer, Greenfield, Ill., and Andrew Spicer, Howard; a daughter, Tammy Meissner, Grand Forks, N.D.; two brothers, Warren Salmons and Jim Salmons, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Lois Kerns, Mount Zion, Ill., Doris Dial, Decatur, Ill., and Janelle Polling, Millmine, Ill.; and 15 grandchildren.

John White

CEDAR VALE - John Lindberg White, 72, of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 6, 1999, at Jane Phillips Memorial Hospital in Bartlesville, Okla.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Wauneta United Methodist Church. The Revs. Larry Bowyer and Delbert Shields will officiate. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery near Wauneta. Graves-Baird Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the Wauneta United Methodist Church.

White was born May 24, 1927, in Cedar Vale, to John and Charlotte (Allen) White. A veteran of World War II, he was a welder.

On March 7, 1959, he married Marian Joann King.

Survivors include his wife, Marian White, Cedar Vale; three sons, John White, Overland Park, Phillip White, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Jim White, Seymour, Ind.; a daughter, Johnna White, Clinton, N.J.; a brother, Frank White, and a sister, Ferne, both of Cedar Vale; and two grandchildren.

Mary Wilvers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mary Elizabeth Wilvers, 96, former longtime resident of Winfield, died Sept. 5, 1999, at Kingswood Manor in Kansas City.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 in Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wilvers was born Jan. 21, 1903, in Saline County, to Henry and Nettie Muir.

In 1922 she married Raymond Wilvers. The family moved from a farm near Mentor to El Dorado in 1930 and to Winfield in 1937. Her husband died in 1971. Wilvers moved to Kansas City in 1985 and to Kingswood Manor in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessie Fink, Kansas City, Mo.; three granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

Walter Bynum

DWIGHT - Walter L. Bynum, 98, of Dwight, former longtime Winfield and Cowley County resident, died Sept. 5, 1999, at Golden Acres Nursing Center in Onaga.

Service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Dwight United Methodist Church and at 2 p.m. at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Dwight United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Bynum was born Jan. 28, 1901, on a farm in Sumner County, to Peter Lester and Fannie (Webb) Bynum. He was raised in Cowley County and received his early education at Victor Point rural school. He graduated from Winfield High School and attended Southwestern College before receiving a bachelor's degree from Bethel College in Newton.

Bynum began his career in the Methodist ministry, pastoring churches in Zion, Elcon in Butler County, Hesston, Wichita, Whitewater, Dalton and Mount Carmel in Sumner County, and Grandview United Methodist Church north of Winfield.

In 1927 he married Mary Alice Moore at Tisdale. They lived in Cowley County and at Elcon throughout their marriage. She died in 1976.

The Rev. Bynum retired from the ministry in 1941 because of health concerns and later served 14 years as superintendent of public schools for Cowley County until 1969.

On Jan. 16, 1977, he married Wilma J. Madison at Tisdale. They owned and operated Bynum's Paint, Wallpaper and Hobbies Co. in Winfield until his retirement in 1979.

The Bynums resided in Council Grove for a number of years before moving to Dwight in August 1998.

He was a member of the Dwight United Methodist Church and had been affiliated with the Winfield Kiwanis Club and the Kansas State Teachers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Bynum, and a daughter, Norma Lee West, both of Dwight; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Gerald Godsey

Gerald Dean "Jerry" Godsey, 71, of 434 Stevens, Winfield, died Sept. 6, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Ron Keith will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church Organ Fund and Hospice Inc. and may be sent to the funeral home.

Godsey was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Lafontaine to Harvey and Julia Alma (Hawk) Godsey. He was raised and educated in Elk City and graduated from Elk City High School in 1945.

He served as a Navy Seabee following World War II.

In December 1945 he married Twila Barnes in Independence. She died in 1966.

On July 7, 1967, he married Doloris Fulk in Winfield.

A resident of Winfield since 1964, Godsey worked as a meat department manager for Safeway Foods until he retired in 1987.

Godsey was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men and Masonic Lodge 172.

Survivors include his wife, Doloris Godsey, and a son, Ronald Godsey, both of Winfield; three daughters, Linda K. Jones, Winfield, Sharon Ramey, Wichita, and Janet Gordon, Zenda; four stepdaughters, Linda J. Jones, Newport News, Va., Marilyn Fulk, Winfield, Vaits Fulk, Newkirk, and Brenda Fisk, Albany, Ga.; his stepmother, Minnie Godsey, Springdale, Ark.; a brother, Harvey Godsey, Independence; two sisters, Betty Jean Wiley, Independence, and Faye Whitson, Nickerson; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

B>Amos Mead

EUCHA, Okla. - Amos A. Mead, 61, of Eucha, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 4, 1999, at St. John's Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield and at 1 p.m. Saturday in Maysville Cemetery near Gravette, Ark.

Mead was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Texas, to Amos Raymond and Jessie (Bryson) Mead. He moved to the Jay, Okla., area as a child, and he was raised and educated in Eucha.

Mead worked with his father in Amos & Son, a house-moving business, and later worked for many years in Kansas and Oklahoma oil fields. A Winfield resident for over 15 years, he was employed locally by Butler Drilling and B&S Well Service.

He retired during the late 1970s because of a physical disability. He lived in Winfield and Broken Arrow, Okla., before moving back to Eucha in 1990.

Mead was affiliated with the Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Chad Mead, Winfield, Ronnie Hamilton, Towanda, and Roger Mead, Grove, Okla.; six daughters, Christina Kester, Wichita, Amy Mead and Andrea Mead, both of Ponca City, Sara Yingling, Winfield, Sheri Wilson, Potwin, and Carla Farris, Arkansas City; three brothers, three sisters and 21 grandchildren.

Ruby Conley

CEDAR VALE - Ruby Martha Conley, 87, of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 6, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Cedar Vale Baptist Church. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch will officiate. Burial will be in North Cedar Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Conley was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Longton, to Walt and Minnie (Martin) Hoyt.

She married Homer Clark Conley in Independence. They later divorced.

Conley had worked in custodial services at Emporia State University and as a nurse's aide in hospitals in Kansas and Texas.

She was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Clark Conley, Arkansas City; two brothers, Everett Hoyt, Bolton, and Earl Hoyt, El Dorado; three sisters, Pearl North and Ruth Hall, both of Fredonia, and Goldie Stewart, Moline; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Ruby Alice Wright, preceded her in death.

Alma Rich

WICHITA - Alma Beatrice Rich, 85, of Wichita, formerly of Oxford, died Sept. 6, 1999, at Cherokee Creek Nursing Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home in Oxford from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Rich was born March 6, 1914, in Wichita, to Jake and Inez (Gilbert) Poshen. She was raised and educated in Wichita.

In 1930 she married Harvey Nordstedt in Wichita.

On April 15, 1973, she married Dewey Ervin Rich in Oxford where they lived throughout their marriage. Her husband died Oct. 23, 1991. After his death, Rich moved to Wichita to live with her daughter, Janet.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Staats and Donna Schulte, both of Wichita, and Inez Garcia, Orange Park, Calif.; three stepsons, Glen E. Rich, Wichita, Earl A. Rich, Cuba, Mo., and Paul E. Rich, Oxford; a stepdaughter, Dorothy L. Bohrer, Arkansas City, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, Harvey Norstedt, preceded her in death.
