Lee Johnson
Lee Wesley Johnson, 85, of Winfield, died Aug. 27, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Moore Prairie Cemetery
north of Elgin.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with Hackney Community Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Johnson was born Dec. 21, 1913, in the Moore Prairie community near Sedan, to Alva Adrian and Ruhemma Jane (Tisdale) Johnson. He was raised in the Moore Prairie community.
On Feb. 10, 1935, he married Helen Riggs at the Johnson farm.
Johnson farmed near Sedan before working for Cities Service. In 1958 he operated a frit furnace for Pomona Tile at Strother Field, and he worked for the Hackney Co-op elevator for 11 years. In 1972 he drove a truck for New Era Mill. He officially retired from New Era Mill in 1980 but operated two grain elevators during wheat harvest for New Era through 1991.
He was an active member of Hackney Baptist Church, where he was a trustee for many years, and a member of the Kansas-Oklahoma Steam & Gas Engine Association.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Johnson, Winfield; two sons, Lee Wayne Johnson, Dexter, and Leo Johnson, Oklahoma City; three daughters, Glenda Martin, Arkansas City, Frieda Hauger, Chickasha, Okla., and Bessie Sterbenz, Tulsa; 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Ruhemma Jane Johnson, preceded him in death.
Helen Brinkmeyer
EL DORADO - Helen J. Brinkmeyer, 75, of El Dorado, died Aug. 27, 1999, at Wichita Specialty Hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Brinkmeyer was born June 3, 1924, near Hugoton, to Theodore and Olive Durinda (Bauer) Walkemeyer. She attended Hugoton schools and the University of Kansas.
On March 10, 1946, she married L. Jay Brinkmeyer in Wichita. They lived in Hawaii, Germany, France and a number of places in the United States because of her husband's Army career. In 1964 they moved to El Dorado.
Brinkmeyer had been a homemaker, writer and librarian.
Her memberships included the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado and the church circle, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Jay Brinkmeyer, and a son, Karl Phil Brinkmeyer, both of El Dorado; and two sisters, Velda McCormick, Maquon, Ill., and Ruth McCormick, Galesburg, Ill.
A daughter, Anna Louise Brinkmeyer, preceded her in death.
Ralph Hawkins
CEDAR VALE - Ralph C. Hawkins, 86, of Cedar Vale, died Aug. 26, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
No service was held. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.
Hawkins was born June 1, 1913, in Cedar Vale, to Gregory Robert and Mary Jane (Leffler) Hawkins. He was a self-employed farmer.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Metcalf, Grenola, and nieces and nephews.
Leonard Jacks
Leonard C. Jacks, 73, of Route 1, Winfield, died Aug. 29, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Floral Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Jacks was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Latham, to James T. and Opal (Cooper) Jacks. He attended local schools.
Jacks was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. From 1954 to 1977 he worked at McConnell Air Force Base as a boiler superintendent. He also worked for St. John's College and later for Binney & Smith before retiring in 1987.
On Jan. 30, 1946, he married Venita Cook.
Jacks was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, the Ancient Order of Free and Accepted Masons, Post 3544 Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 10 and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Venita Jacks, Winfield; a son, Cecil Jacks, Wichita; two daughters, Jo Russell, Winfield, and Lucille Feist, Wichita; a brother, James T. Jacks Jr., Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Louise White, Dodge City, and Opal Lippincott, Winfield; and six grandchildren.
Arthenia Wells
ARKANSAS CITY - Arthenia L. Wells, 66, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 29, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
chapel. Loren Grimes will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Wells was born Oct. 23, 1932, in Dilworth, Okla., to Byron Vernon and Mary Abigill (Young) McMains. She moved to Arkansas City in 1944.
On Sept. 4, 1948, she married Marion "Pete" Wells in Arkansas City where they lived during most of their marriage.
Survivors include her husband, Pete Wells, Arkansas City; a son, Wesley Wells, Dodge City; a daughter, Dorma Brooks, and a brother, Floyd McMains, both of Arkansas City; two sisters, Eugenia Whitford, Arkansas City, and June Sedgwick, Lena, Ill.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Charles E. Wells, preceded her in death.
Harold Thompson
Harold H. Thompson, 88, of 614 1/2 E. Sixth, Winfield, died Aug. 29, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Green Lawn Cemetery
in Grenola.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Thompson was born Oct. 29, 1910, in the Cloverdale area, to Charles D. and Bertha Naomi Thompson. He graduated from Grenola High School in 1929 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College through 1933.
In 1935 he married Margaret Holroyd. They divorced in 1955.
In 1975 he married Shirley Hagin.
Thompson spent his early years teaching in a rural Cloverdale school, in the Belew school north of Cedar Vale and in the Star school east of Grenola. In later years he was employed in the wholesale-retail meat business in Borger, Texas, and later in Winfield. He retired in the late 1970s.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Thompson, Winfield; three sons, Wallace L. Thompson, Winfield, Mark A. Thompson, Cedar Vale, and Kenneth D. Thompson, Belleville, Ontario, Canada; three daughters, Judy C. Owens, Cedar Vale, Martha N. Timblin, St. Louis, and Misty Ellen Thompson, Winfield; a sister, Naomi Farabi, Pittsburg; a brother, Charles D. Thompson, Ukiah, Calif.; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A son, Jerry M. Thompson, preceded him in death.
Lee Johnson
Services for Lee Wesley Johnson, 85, who died Aug. 27, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 30 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Ted Brown, John Stone and Ron Keith officiated.
Special music selections included "He Touched Me," sung by Frieda Hauger and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "Amazing Grace," sung by Frieda Hauger, Bessie Sterbenz and Gary Lowden.
Burial was at 3 p.m. in Moore Prairie Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Wilbur Salinger, Marvin Hostetter, Ira Underwood, Neil Hunt, Homer LaBrue and Carroll and Donnie Underwood.
Casket bearers were Jim, Marty, Duane and William Johnson, Kenneth and Gary Lowden and Kenneth, Michael and Joseph Sterbenz.
William Mayo
Services for William "Roy" Mayo, 73, who died Aug. 25, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated.
American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military honors.
Vocal music was "Go Rest High on That Mountain."
Honorary casket bearers were David Bear and Bill, John, Randy, Richard and Rob Mayo.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Kathryn Thompson
ARKANSAS CITY - Mary "Kathryn" Thompson, 81, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 31, 1999, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Revs. Warren Smith and H. Dean LaVelle will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Thompson was born May 20, 1918, in Enid, Okla., to Harry M. and Alpha M. (Sims) Baker. She was raised and educated in Arkansas City and Grandfield, Okla. After graduating from high school in Grandfield in 1936, she attended beauty college in Arkansas City.
On July 31, 1937, she married Leonard J. Thompson in Kingman. They made their home in Arkansas City until 1948 when they moved to a farm at Cedar Vale. They returned to Arkansas City in 1992, and her husband died in 1997.
A homemaker, Thompson was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Gordon W. Thompson, Ponca City, Dwight R. Thompson, Geuda Springs, and Norman L. Thompson, Arkansas City; two daughters, Gayla S. Eaglin, Wichita, and Lila Jean Hudgins, Ponca City; a sister, Hazel Kelly, Arkansas City; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A son, Gary D. Thompson, preceded her in death.
