Lovina Hilfinger

Lovina Willetta Hilfinger, 83, of Winfield, died July 27, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Oxford Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Hilfinger was born July 22, 1916, in Oxford, to John and Ivah Paton. Following graduation from Oxford High School, she attended Southwestern College and received a degree in English education in 1938.

After teaching for two years in western Kansas, she returned to Winfield where she married Wallace Hilfinger. They later moved to Wichita. In 1967, after her children were grown, she moved back to Winfield where she taught seventh- and eighth-grade English for 14 years until her retirement in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Ron Hilfinger, New Philadelphia, Ohio; her daughter, Margo Hilfinger, Deep River, Conn.; two sisters, Ila Skinner, Belle Plaine, and JoAnn Parsons, Oxford; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Donald Johnson

Services for Donald L. Johnson, 60, who died July 23, 1999, were held at 3 p.m. July 27 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Roderick Hathaway officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Guest speakers were Jim Hamlin and Bill Meridith.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang "In the Garden," "Amazing Grace," "Dear Heart" and "Precious Memories."

Honorary casket bearers were Bill Crittenden, Clarence Hamlin, Robert Hicks, Dale Lehning, Leroy Mills and Jim West.

Casket bearers were Don Chesser, Jim, Marvin and Steve Hamlin, Bill Meridith and Darrell Webber.

Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and Winfield Area Emergency Medical Services.

James Stephens

MOLINE - James Stephens, 86, of Moline, formerly of the New Salem area, died July 28, 1999, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Moline. The Rev. Ted Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

The Stephens family will receive visitors at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Senior Citizens Center. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Stephens was born Feb. 25, 1913, in the New Salem community near Winfield, to Claude DeWitt and Nancy (Coon) Stephens. He was educated at Harmony Rural School near New Salem and began farming as a youth.

On April 10, 1938, he married Nina E. Powers in Winfield. They farmed near New Salem for 12 years before moving to a farm near Moline in 1950. They lived and worked on their Elk County farm for over 40 years. His wife died Oct. 11, 1993.

Stephens attended the First Christian Church in Moline. He formerly served as community leader for Shining Star 4-H and had served on the Moline board of education. He was a longtime member and former president of the Elk County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include three sons, Harry Stephens, Emporia, Larry Stephens, Burden, and Don Stephens, Severy; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A son, Roger Stephens, died in 1955.

Glenn Cross

CEDAR VALE - Glenn C. Cross, 88, of Cedar Vale, died July 29, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the People's Place and the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cross was born Feb. 4. 1911, in Edgemont, to Arthur and Zada Pearle (Smothers) Cross. During the Depression, when the local high school was closed for a period, he went to barber college in Pueblo, Colo. After that experience, he graduated from Peru High School in 1931.

On Feb. 20, 1938, he married LaVone F. Cable in Cedar Vale. The Crosses moved to Cedar Vale in 1946 after Cross served in World War II. In Cedar Vale he owned and operated Cross Hardware Store for over 30 years.

Cross had been a member of the city council, a member and president of the chamber of commerce, a member and commander of the American Legion and a member and master of the Masons.

Survivors include his wife, LaVone Cross, Cedar Vale; a daughter, Sandra Walling, Wichita; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Roger Cross, preceded him in death.

Wendell Grove

Wendell D. Grove, 84, of Winfield, died July 29, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston will officiate. Burial of the cremains will take place in a private service in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may sign the register book at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church Organ Fund. Contributions may be sent to the funeral home.

Grove was born March 6, 1915, in Virgil, to William Thomas and Minnie (Dalton) Grove.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1934 and from Baker University with a bachelor's degree in education. He taught science in Ashland, Anthony and Dodge City schools for six years.

On Jan. 29, 1939, he married Elinor Lawrence in Hutchinson.

In 1946 the family moved to Winfield, and he worked for Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. as a salesman for 20 years. He then worked for Investment Diversified Services and Columbian Securities Co. for a few years before moving with his wife to Longmont, Colo., in the mid-1970s. In Longmont they worked in a residential retirement community as managers while he also worked for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement in 1993.

The Groves moved back to Winfield several years ago.

Grove had been active in Kiwanis, First United Methodist Church and community music activities. He was a lay leader, a certified lay speaker, a choir member and a member of the United Methodist Men. He was a past president of the Winfield Oratorio Society and was involved in some early productions of the Winfield Community Theatre.

Survivors include his wife, Elinor Grove, Winfield; three sons, the Rev. Larry Grove, Fredonia, David Grove, Valley Falls, and Dan Grove, Longmont, Colo.; a daughter, Kathy Baker, Winfield; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Erwin Harris

UDALL - A service for Erwin Lee Harris, 83, who died July 22, 1999, was held at 10 a.m. July 29 in the Udall Congregational Church. The Revs. Mike Rethmeier and Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Udall Cemetery.

Jason Greever was the organist, and Sandra Zimmerman sang "Going Home" and "Suppertime."

Casket bearers were Rick and Tracy Ross, Howard Meyer, Patrick Ray, Jason and Ben Burley, Matt and Michael Doyle, Elliott Jackson, Lionel Barley and Mike Costello.

Memorials have been established with the Udall Congregational Church and Friendship Meals.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Glenn May

ANDOVER - Glenn R. May, 90, a resident of the Atlanta community for over 60 years, died July 30, 1999, at Andover Health Care Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with the Atlanta Community Building Fund and the Atlanta Rural Volunteer Fire Department District 2. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or Citizens Bank of Atlanta.

May was born Nov. 29, 1908, in Caldwell, to Chi Chester and Bessie (Burns) May. He was raised and educated in the Caldwell area and began his agricultural career as a youth.

On May 25, 1939, he married Mabel Luvina Lambotte at her parents' home in Rossville. The Mays lived and worked on their farm north of Atlanta throughout their marriage. Mr. May is credited with introducing wheat as a crop to northern Cowley County, planting the first wheat there in 1939.

Mrs. May died Oct. 20, 1994. Mr. May continued to reside in Atlanta until moving to the Andover Health Care Center in February 1996.

A lifelong farmer and stockman, he was a member of the Nondenomin-ational Christian Faith.

Survivors include two sons, George May, Craig, Colo., and Dale May, Goodland; three daughters, Glenice Schraw, Wichita, and Mary Headrick and Wanda Headrick, both of Atlanta; a sister, Pearl Unruh, Marysville; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A brother, Kenneth May, died July 29, 1999.

Jane Rogers

Dr. Jane Rogers, 67, of 1415 Millington, Winfield, retired professor emeritus at Southwestern College, died July 31, 1999, at her home. Cremation has taken place.

All friends and former students are invited to attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. Tuesday at her residence. The Revs. Ron Keith and Fran Broadhurst will officiate. Lois Liggett will perform on the dulcimer.

Memorials have been established with Hospice and Southwestern College.

Rogers was born March 19, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Stanley John and Gertrude (Tuttle) Rogers. When she was 15, the family moved to Texas.

Rogers, could not read until she was in fifth grade, and it was her struggles with learning to read that led her to a career in education. She graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, a master's degree in biology and psychology and a doctorate in educational psychology and education. Before she began her career in education, she was also enrolled in a school of nursing.

Before coming to Winfield in 1976, she had a variety of positions, including curriculum director and principal at Beth Yeshurum School in Houston, a Jewish elementary school. While at the school, she aided in designing the school building and taught at the University of Houston for five years.

At Southwestern College, she was dean of graduate studies and dean of the education division. She inaugurated master's programs in both education and liberal arts, taught both liberal arts and education courses and conducted research. She also guided students in choosing research projects, including doctoral topics. She also taught a course on the Holocaust for many years. Her Holocaust library was donated to Southwestern.

She was very active in the Winfield Community Theatre where she made her debut in "On Golden Pond." She was also active in the Winfield Arts & Humanities Council.

After St. John's College closed in 1986, Rogers was instrumental in getting the city of Winfield to purchase the St. John's campus.

An avid antique collector, she ran an antique store in Winfield for several years.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Swain, Winfield, and Nancy Mikolajchak, Wichita; a sister, Dr. Nancy Jircik, Houston; and four grandchildren.
