Nellie Walkinshaw
CEDAR VALE - Nellie May Walkinshaw, 91, of Cedar Vale, died June 24, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 9, at Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. A luncheon provided by church members will follow. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Walkinshaw was born Jan. 7, 1908, at Hooser, to Frank Merwin and Ada M. (Owen) Hubbard. In 1910 the family moved to Cedar Vale, and she graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1925.
She attended Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan and Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg, took correspondence courses and was a member of the Omnibus College at Southwestern College in the summer of 1930.
She taught for nine years, including at rural schools, North Cedar and Lookout Valley; Cedar Vale; Anthony and a school in Chihuahua, Mexico.
It was in Chihuahua that she met her future husband, Robert Murray Walkinshaw, of Polmont, Scotland, a master machinist. They were married at her parents' home in Cedar Vale on May 19, 1936. They lived in Mexico until moving to Houston in 1938.
After her husband's death on May 11, 1951, in Houston, Walkinshaw moved with her children to Cedar Vale. She worked as an accountant for Caney Valley Electric Cooperative Association Inc. for 21 years until her retirement in 1973.
Walkinshaw was a member of the United Methodist Church, a 50-year member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the hospital auxiliary, the Welfare Club and the historical society.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Murray Walkinshaw and John Merwin Walkinshaw; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Fern Arnold
SAN DIEGO - Fern (Elam) Arnold, 74, of San Diego, formerly of Winfield, died June 26, 1999, in San Diego.
Her body was donated to the University of Southern California Medical School.
Arnold was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Thayer. She lived and attended school in Winfield.
Her husband, Percy Arnold, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Frank Harris; six brothers, Joe Elam Winfield, Wayne Elam, Arthur Elam and Herbert Elam, all of Missouri, Earl Elam, Georgia, and Harley Elam, Wichita; and a sister, Patricia Rockhold, Arkansas City.
Hazel Bannon
ARKANSAS CITY - Hazel L. Bannon, 93, homemaker, of Arkansas City, died June 30, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel in Winfield. The Rev. Mark Boxman will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.
Bannon was born Sept. 23, 1905, in Mulvane, to Edward and Maggie (York) Dye.
On Nov. 29, 1923, she married Benjamin "Perry" Bannon in Wichita.
Survivors include a son, James Bannon, Kirtland, N.M.; two daughters, Edna Houston, Arkansas City, and Hazel Simmons, Wichita; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Daniel Marten
Services for Daniel Frederick Marten, 87, who died June 29, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. July 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Sandy Yount was the organist, and Gigi Dudeck sang "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and "The Lord's Prayer." Other vocal music included "Amazing Grace," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were Marten's grandchildren, David Roush, Dennis Marten, Dr. Diane Kamen, Jennifer Lyons, Steven Marten, Katherine Roush, Michael Lyons and Daniel Kamen, and his great-grandchildren, Joseph Marten, Sarah Marten, Benjamin Marten and Shelby Marten.
Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Research Foundation.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mack Summers
Mack Summers, 63, of 3211 Bolero Court, Winfield, died July 1, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.
Summers was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Ardmore, Okla., to Mack S. and Ruth Summers. He graduated from Ardmore High School in 1953 and from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater in 1957.
On Aug. 25, 1956, he married Karen L. King in Winfield. She died May 21, 1998.
In 1994 Summers retired from First Community Federal Savings and Loan where he served as president and chairman of the board of directors.
He was active in the First United Methodist Church and the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce and he helped to coach Little League.
Survivors include a son, Craig Summers, Lenexa; a daughter, Sharon Pappas, Overland Park; a brother, Robert A. Summers, Owasso, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
Edith Kittelson
WICHITA - Edith Kittelson, 82, of Wichita, died July 1, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dennis D. Winzenried will officiate. Devorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Zeta Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Psi Cancer Project, 871 W. 49th N., Wichita, KS 67204.
Kittelson was born Sept. 24, 1916, in Winfield. She was a secretary for USD 259 in Wichita before her retirement.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Fredin, Wichita; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Hugh Royse
MOLINE - Hugh Eugene Royse, 90, longtime resident of Longton, died June 30, 1999, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery
in Howard.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation. Contributions may be left at the funeral home. Zimmerman Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Royse was born Aug. 30, 1908, on a farm near Howard, to Fred Eugene and Ethel Pearl (Small) Royse.
In 1913 the family moved to Oklahoma where he attended rural school. In January 1924 the family returned to Kansas in a covered wagon. They made their home near Elk Falls until moving to Longton in 1927.
On April 30, 1930, he married Mary Susan Lewis in Elk Falls. They made their home on a farm near Longton for many years. In 1946 he became employed at the Elk County Highway Department and worked there until he retired in 1957.
He entered Elk Manor Nursing Home on March 19 of this year.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Royse, Longton; a son, Fred Royse, Arkansas City; four daughters, Alvena Spurrier, Boise, Idaho, Mary Lynn Howell, Wichita, Joyce Kelly, Neosho, Mo., and Susan Johnson, Augusta; a brother, George Royse, Longton; a sister, Edith Sprague, Caney; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Bounmy Phoutthavong
Bounmy Phoutthavong, 78, of 605 E. Eighth, Winfield, died July 2, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and until noon Monday.
Phoutthavong was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Sam Neua, Laos, to Sene Pheng and Nang Boun. He was raised and educated in Laos.
As a young man he married Nang Sim. They farmed in Laos throughout their marriage. She died in 1981.
Phoutthavong emigrated to the United States in 1986 and had made his home in Winfield for the past 13 years.
Survivors include four sons, Thao One, Winfield, and Thao Khamphong, Thao Oth and Thao Pha, all of Laos; three daughters, Nang Toy, Winfield, and Nang Bao and Nang Pia, both of Laos; 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Thao Phommy and Thao Vanthong, preceded him in death.
Nettie Blakey
Nettie J. Blakey, 98, of Winfield, died July 3, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. The Rev. Diane Massey will officiate. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
Blakey was born April 16, 1901, in the Tisdale community, to Westley and Lena (Shannon) Patterson.
On March 31, 1924, she married Ralph Blakey in Winfield. He died in February 1962.
A member of the First Baptist Church, she was employed at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Blakey and Larry Blakey, both of Winfield; a daughter, Vivian Wheeler, Mountain Home, Ark.; and 10 grandchildren.
