Virgil Kennedy
WICHITA - Virgil Oswald Kennedy, 99, formerly of Winfield, died April 6, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with Grace United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Kennedy was born March 9, 1900, in Atlanta, to David Washington and Laura Ann (Wilson) Kennedy. He was raised and educated in the Cowley County area and graduated from Winfield High School in 1919. He attended Southwestern College and Kansas State Agriculture College.
Kennedy met his future wife, Ethel Rosella Butler, while they were working as farm hands for relatives in Matheson, Colo. They married on Feb. 22, 1926, in Hugo, Colo. She died Nov. 24, 1993.
The Kennedys spent their early years in Colorado working as farmers. After selling their farm, they moved to Winfield where he worked at Jarvis-Thompson Lumber Co. until World War II when he went to work at Beech and Boeing Aircraft as a jig builder. He retired in 1965.
An avid gardener, Kennedy helped his family get through the Depression with his produce. He had the longest-standing membership at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield.
Survivors include two sons, David Kennedy, Conway, Ark., and Robert Kennedy, Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Shirley Bradford, Rose Hill, Linda Crabb, Hutchinson, and Laura Bost, Goddard; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Eldon Shaw
NEWKIRK, Okla. - Eldon E. Shaw, 79, of Newkirk, formerly of Arkansas City, died April 5, 1999, in Ponca City.
Services will be at 2 p.m Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Pastor Lynden Howard will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Hospice of Ponca City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Shaw was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Friend, Neb., to Edward and Hulda (Brandt) Shaw. He attended schools in Nebraska and later attended a trade school. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Shaw married Isabel Gillespie. On April 16, 1954, he married Beulah Fildes McGlasson in Gainesville, Texas. They made their home in Arkansas City before moving to Missouri and then to Newkirk in 1987.
Shaw worked for Skyline and also was self-employed in construction and operated Shaw Ditching Service. He later worked as a machinist for Plessey Aircraft in Wellington.
He was a life member of the Newkirk Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Shaw, Newkirk; a daughter, Lois Austin-McGlasson, Ponca City; two stepsons, Boyd McGlasson, Auburn, and Loyd McGlasson, Salt Lake City; two brothers, Loren Shaw, Portland, Ore., and William Shaw, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Winnie Ochsner and Luella Kenney, both of Lincoln, Neb.; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Charles Andreae
Services for Charles O. Andreae, 70, who died April 4, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. April 7 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Lyle Bolen officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Vocal music selections were "Go Rest High on That Mountain," "Amazing Grace" and "I Saw the Light."
Casket bearers were Anthony, Daniel and David Andreae, Tim Feaster, George Lindly, Heath Moore, Traci Pope and Kerry Smith.
Charlotte Baker
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Charlotte Marcele Baker, 79, who died April 3, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. April 7 in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
near Arkansas City. The Rev. Ron Keith officiated.
Vocal music selections were "Amazing Grace," "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Memories."
Honorary casket bearers were Ben Baker, Ben Holman, Wilbur Laubhan, Leonard Lawrence, Wayne Rush and Norman Shanks.
Casket bearers were David Wayne Baker, Sean Baker, David Larnard, Larry Tanquary, Lyle Tanquary and Joe Wilgers.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and First Christian Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Geraldine Bentley
Geraldine M. Robinson Bentley, 62, of Winfield, formerly of Arkansas City, died April 7, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Riverview Cemetery
in Arkansas City. Friends may call at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Bentley was born May 12, 1936, in Winfield, to Raymond R. and Garnet A. (Taylor) Smith. Raised in Arkansas City, she graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954 and from Cowley County Community College in 1956.
A retired floral designer, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield.
Survivors include a son, Michael Dean Robinson, and a daughter, Cindy Kay Robinson, both of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Kenneth Smith, Dallas; and five grandchildren.
Robert Latham
CEDAR VALE - Robert V. Latham, 69, of Cedar Vale, died April 8, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no service. Wheeler Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
Latham was born Jan. 6, 1930, in Wichita, to Robert V. and Mildred Pernina (Utt) Latham. His father died a short time later, and Robert was raised by his mother and stepfather, Mildred and Ferris Brown. He graduated from Wichita East High School and attended Wichita State University.
In 1953 he married Marilyn Harris. They later divorced.
On Dec. 21, 1962, he married Jeanette Bullock in Los Angeles. She died June 4, 1988.
Latham worked at Boeing for a short time and at the Wichita Eagle before being self-employed for 14 years. He later moved to San Francisco and worked for California Pacific Utilities as an offset printer. He retired from there to fulfill his desire to become a writer and moved to Cedar Vale in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Gabriella Latham and Gina Wright, both of Cedar Vale, and four grandchildren.
Clara Ozbun
Clara May Ozbun, 85, of 301 N. Iowa, Winfield, died April 3, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Ozbun was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Elk Creek, Mo., to William Alonzo and Bertha May (Miller) Elrod. She attended school in Missouri.
On March 16, 1938, she married Harold F. Ozbun in Wichita. They moved to Winfield that same year and lived here throughout their marriage. Her husband died in January 1994.
Survivors include a sister, Sally Baldwin, Arroyo Grande, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Jeannine Elrod, Florence; two nephews and a niece.
Helen Pietkiewicz
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Helen Dean Pietkiewicz, 74, of Murfreesboro, formerly of Winfield, died April 7, 1999, at Boulevard Terrace Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Woodfin Memorial Chapel. The Rev. David Huffman will officiate.

Pietkiewicz, a native of Enid, Okla., was a daughter of William Clark and Mamie Helton Arnette.
She had been a social worker in Tennessee and Kansas. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Bill Pietkiewicz, Shelbyville; and two grandchildren.
Harold Joe McAlister
MOLINE - Harold Joe McAlister, 69, of Moline, died April 9, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Harold Tucker will officiate. Interment will be held in the Belknap Cemetery, Belknap.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church in Moline and the Elk County 4-H Council. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.
McAlister was born March 14, 1930, to Johnnie Sheridan and Hazel Dorothy Chase McAlister. He attended rural school and graduated from Moline High School in 1948.
McAlister married Pat Boyer on Jan. 2, 1953 at Moline.
McAlister was a lifetime farmer and rancher, and was employed many years as an Elk County road foreman.
He was a member of the Sedan Roundup Club, the Elk County Cattleman's Association, and was a former 4-H leader.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; his son, Gary, Moline; his daughter, Kathy Spurlock, Neodesha; a brother, Gerald, Moline; a sister, Mable Kinnaman, Louisburg; and three grandchildren.
Hazel E. Axtell
MOLINE - Hazel Etta Axtell, 102, of Moline, died April 8, 1999, at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Moline Cemetery. The Rev. John Foust will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Elk Manor Nursing Home. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Axtell was born July 25, 1896, in Leavenworth County on a farm near Bonner Springs, to George Monroe and Annie Elisa Seevers Knabe. She moved with her family to Chautauqua County in 1900, where she attended Old Boston rural school. She graduated from Moline High School in 1917. She later earned a bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State Training School, then lived two summers in California where she studied foreign languages.
Axtell married Fred Lawrence Axtell in 1935.
The Axtells lived in Grenola, where they published The Grenola News. They later moved to Moline, where they published The Moline Advance, until their retirement.
Survivors include her husband Fred; her sister, Leona Knabe, Moline; and several nieces and nephews.
