Orval Neal
ARKANSAS CITY - Orval Clarence Neal, 91, of Arkansas City, died March 27, 1999, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Silverdale Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Knight will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Building Fund. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Neal was born June 11, 1907, in Neosho, Mo., to W.R. and Elizabeth Neal. He was raised and educated in the Neosho area.
Neal married Melva L. Mount in Fredonia, and they lived in the Dexter, Silverdale and Winfield communities. She died in the 1960s.
He later married Madeline Morrey. She, too, preceded him in death.
Neal worked as a member of the section crew for the Missouri-Pacific for many years.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Arkansas City.
Survivors include three sons, C.E. Neal and W.A. Neal, both of Texas, and Ray Neal, Shawnee, Okla.; four daughters, Ida Anderson, Wilda Waite, Joyce Waite and May Shelton, all of Arkansas City; 30 grandchildren 35 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Three sons, Walter Neal, Jess Neal and Johnny Neal, and a daughter, Dorothy Cook, all preceded him in death.
Ralph Burdick
PITTSBURG - Ralph Lawrence Burdick, 78, of Pittsburg, died March 28, 1999, at Wichita Specialty Hospital in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Brenner Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Rick McNary will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Highland Cemetery
in Winfield.
Burdick was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Tuttle, Okla., to Ernest Eugene and Tennessee Ida (Richardson) Burdick. He was raised and educated in Dexter. In 1938 he married Wanda Grace Brown in Winfield.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.
The Burdicks moved to Pittsburg from Wichita in 1951. He was employed in the USD 250 maintenance department until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Beulah Community Church and Benjamin A. Fuller Post 64 of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Burdick, Pittsburg; two sons, Fred Burdick, El Dorado, and Ernest Eugene Burdick, Joplin, Mo.; four daughters, Barbara Crawford and Janice Adams, both of Wichita, Carolyn Carlon, Mulvane, and Rosemary Cowger, Medford; a brother, Clifford Burdick, Disney, Okla.; three sisters, Mary Ellen Waymire, Fort Worth, Texas, Dorothy Armstrong, Haysville, and Lois Albright, Wichita; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Louise Weathers
Louise Weathers, 81, of Lincolnville, formerly of Winfield, died March 22, 1999. Services were held March 25 in Lincolnville.
Survivors include her sons, Bill Weathers, Lincolnville, and Bob Weathers, Herington; her daughters, Lavona Loveless and Helen Bernhardt, both of Marion, Sandra Know, Wichita, and Mary Pope, Colorado; and a sister, Wilma Metz, Oxford.
Ray Wilson
MOLINE - Ray Albert Wilson, 91, of Moline, died March 27, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Grenola Christian Church. Pastor Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and Grenola Historical Society. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Wilson was born Dec. 11, 1907, west of Moline, to Hartwell and Clara V. (Cunningham) Wilson. He attended rural school in the Moline area. The family moved to Colorado for a brief time in the 1920s, then returned to Kansas.
Wilson lived in Texas for a short time but made his home on the family farm through the rest of his life. He was a farmer and rancher and also did bulldozer work for others.
He was a longtime member of the Elk County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Verna Wilson, Moline, and Hazel Wilson, Des Moines, Iowa; a cousin, Elizabeth Wilson, Moline; and several nieces and nephews.
Laura Bradbury
Services for the Rev. Laura E. Bradbury were held at 10:30 a.m. March 31, 1999, in Colonial Chapel at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
Tammy Hyatt sang "Going Down the Valley" and "The Lord's Prayer." Rose Marie Watt was the organist.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers were Kathy Pidcock, Karma Sanders and Karen Woerner.
Casket bearers were Tracy and Trent Booth, Brad, David and Mark Donley, and Karl, Kevin and Kirk Woerner.
Daisy Shockey
WICHITA - Daisy Shockey, 81, retired Internal Revenue Service audit control supervisor, died April 3, 1999, in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westside Christian Church in Wichita. Hillside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Westside Christian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Argo, a stepdaughter, Virginia Stoner, and two stepsons, Donald Shockey and Gilbert Shockey, all of Wichita; a sister, Olive Dannenfelseer, Baytown, Texas; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Angela Stednitz
LAWRENCE - Angela Dean Stednitz, 81, of Lawrence, formerly of Hiawatha, died April 3, 1999, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hiawatha. The Rev. Terence Sullivan will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery
at Hiawatha.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today. A parish wake service will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by visitation until 8:30.
A memorial has been established with St. Ann's Catholic Church. Contributions can be sent to the funeral home at 519 N First, Hiawatha, KS 66434.
Stednitz was born Dec. 28, 1917, at Fidelity to Henry and Odelia (Baunman) Bindel. She grew up in the Fidelity and Mercier areas before moving to Hiawatha in 1948.
On Feb. 20, 1938, she married George W. Dean Jr. at Fidelity. He died May 6, 1966. In June 1970 she married Harold Stednitz in Lawrence. He died Dec. 28, 1983. She was engaged to be married to Gilbert Goodger before he died Sept. 11, 1996.
A lifelong northeast Kansas resident, she sold Avon products for 10 years and later cleaned homes in Hiawatha and Lawrence. She moved to Lawrence in January 1999.
Stednitz was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Hiawatha, the Altar Society and a Bible study class.
Survivors include three sons, George L. Dean, Topeka, Jere Dean, Winfield, and Ron Dean, Netawaka; three daughters, Georgia Bachman and Shirley Bockner, both of Lawrence, and Vicki Mallonee, Lecompton; a sister, Ida Fuhrman, Hiawatha; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Charlotte Baker
Charlotte Marcele Tanquary Baker, 79, of 2006 W. Ninth, in Winfield, died April 3, 1999, at her home following a long illness.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Winfield. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon on Wednesday.
Memorial have been established with Hospice Inc. and the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Baker was born Feb. 7, 1920, at Arkansas City, to Claude Harold and Corrine (Voltz) Tanquary. When she was a young girl, the family moved to Roxanna, Okla., where her father was employed in the nearby oil boom. She received her early education at Roxanna, and during her teens, the family returned to a home on Greens Farm Road near Arkansas City.
She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1938.
On Oct. 3, 1940, she married Wayland J. Baker. They made their first home in Arkansas City, where she was employed in the business office at Mercy Hospital. They later resided in Wichita and Leavenworth before moving to Winfield in 1948.
Mrs. Baker worked at Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita before beginning employment in the business offices of Binney & Smith Corp. in Winfield.
A longtime member of First Christian Church in Winfield, she was also affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star and the Friendly Neighbor Club in Winfield.
Survivors include her husband, Wayland Baker, Winfield; a son, Donald Keith Baker, Clay Center; three brothers, Harold Tanquary, Wichita, Donald Tanquary, Enumclaw, Wash., and Robert Tanquary, Camarillo, Calif.; a sister, Thelma Ham, Winfield; and three grandchildren.
Anna Crowell
LONGTON - Anna Crowell, 94, homemaker, died April 3, 1999, at her home in Longton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Longton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Gerald Manley and David Sanchez will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Longton United Methodist Church and the Community Christian Church of Longton. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Crowell was born Jan. 8, 1905, at Parker, S.D., to Frank and Margaretha (Reimer) Guenther. She attended school in South Dakota.
On Jan. 19, 1926, she married Charles Bruce Crowell at Sioux Falls, S.D. They made their home in South Dakota until moving to Elk County in May 1931. Her husband died in 1978.
Crowell was a longtime member of the Longton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Crowell, Iola, and Rex Crowell, Longton; her daughters, Caryl Brown, Minot, N.D., Beverly Baker, Winfield, and Kathryn Lozano, Topeka; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Sandy Crowell and Jimmy Crowell, preceded her in death.
