Arlene Walker
ARKANSAS CITY - R. Arlene Walker, 63, of Arkansas City, died March 17, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Guy E. Rendoff and Ron Fleig will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Walker was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Silverdale, to Charles A. and LaVaun (Lowrie) Gilmore. She was raised and educated in Arkansas City and graduated from high school in 1953.
She married Richard Purvis and later married David W. Walker on Aug. 30, 1963.
She worked for Southwestern Bell, Boeing, Rodeo Meats, Cowley County Community College, Glass Trucking and most recently for Gordon-Piatt.
A member of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, she also belonged to the Rodeoettes and the Heart Menders of William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, David W. Walker, Arkansas City; a daughter, Patty Doughty, Ponca City; a stepson, Dave Forhmals, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Janet Burg, Tulsa; a brother, Jim Gilmore, Oklahoma City; two sisters, Donna Brown and Betty Harper, both of Arkansas City; her mother, LaVaun Gilmore, Arkansas City; and five grandchildren.
An infant son, Michael Purvis, preceded her in death.
Howard Nugen
ARKANSAS CITY - W. Howard Nugen, 83, of Arkansas City, died March 17, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Geuda Springs Cemetery.
Friends may call at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home beginning at noon Friday.
A memorial has been established with Redeemer Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Nugen was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Hennessey, Okla., to William Henry and Grace (Edwards) Nugen.
On Oct. 10, 1942, he married Edna Strauss in Wichita. They made their home in Wichita until 1945 when they moved to Arkansas City. Mr. Nugen worked for Boeing and farmed. Mrs. Nugen preceded him in death.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Walker and Joyce Holloway, both of Arkansas City; two brothers, Lewis Nugen, Wellington, and Charles Nugen, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Hazel Chapman, Arkansas City; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Corinne Potter
ARKANSAS CITY - Corinne Anne Potter, 72, of Arkansas City, died March 17, 1999, at her home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Wade Graber will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to assist in raising funds for the Arkansas City Fire Department's new Thermal Imager. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Potter was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Grenola, to Henry Leo and Vina V. (McKain) Potter. She was raised and educated in Grenola and graduated from Grenola High School in 1945.
On June 6, 1946, she married Floyd Robert Potter in Columbus. They had made their home in the Arkansas City area since 1950.
Mrs. Potter had worked for the Mauer-Neuer Meat Packing Co. for seven years before opening Potter's Liquor Store on July 2, 1970. She retired in 1989.
She was a member of Central Christian Church, Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Sheldon-Beaty Post 18 American Legion Auxiliary and the Grenola Historical Society.
Mr. Potter died in 1982.
Survivors include a son, David Potter, and two daughters, Tracey Williams and Trudy Kennedy, all of Arkansas City; two brothers, Delbert Potter, Bartlesville, and Robert Potter, Winfield; a sister, Jean Miller, Chanute; and five grandchildren.
Leota Martin
ARKANSAS CITY - Leota Martin, 85, of Arkansas City, died March 19, 1999, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Norman Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and Grouse Valley Manor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Martin was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Hoosier, to Robert F. and Minnie D. (Rush) Shafer. She was raised and educated in Dexter where she graduated from high school in 1932.
On June 17, 1935, she married George H. Martin in Pampa, Texas, where they made their home briefly. They returned to Dexter, then moved to Arkansas City in 1941. Mr. Martin died in 1986.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Central Christian Church, Women of the Moose, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Royal Neighbors.
Survivors include a son, Robert M. Martin, Alex, Okla.; a daughter, Rita McBride, Arkansas City; three brothers, John L. Shafer, Dexter, Cecil Shafer, Topeka, and Jack Shafer, Wellington; a sister, Melva Hobbs, Arkansas City; three grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.
Howard Nugen

Gene Zerger
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Allen Eugene "Gene" Zerger, 88, of Lake Charles, La., formerly of Winfield, died March 3, 1999, at his residence.
Services were held March 6, 1999, at University United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tom Howe officiated. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Hixson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Zerger was born April 12, 1910, in Winfield, to Harry and Sadie (Weigle) Zerger. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1928, then attended Pittsburg State College.
After he graduated from Pittsburg State, he went to work for Conoco where he remained until his retirement.
He married Effie Watson, also a 1928 graduate of Winfield High School. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Zerger had lived in Lake Charles for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Lions Club, Methodist Men, Mended Hearts and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and had been a member of Lake Charles Lodge 165 Free and Accepted Masons for more than 50 years. He was a member of University United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Rex Zerger, Houston, Texas; a daughter, Katherine L. Davidson, San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Dorothy Dobbs
Services for Dorothy Lorraine Dobbs, 71, who died March 16, 1999, were held at 1 p.m. March 20, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Clarence Marquardt officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Kara Dawn and Jerid Thomas performed "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "The Lord's Prayer." Meditation music was "Indian Prayer."
Honorary casket bearers were Dean Bradbury, Ernest Hensley, Bill Hinkley, Don Kline, Bill Long, Don Miles and Bill Thornton.
Casket bearers were Jim Buterbaugh, Dennis Dobbs, Roger Dobbs, Morris Jarvis, Rodney Long and Loren Pontius.
Memorials have been established with the Oxford schools' music programs and Hand-in-Hand Hospice of Emporia.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
Asia Phengphanph
Asia Raechelle' Phengphanh, daughter of Soukhaseum Souk Phengphanh and Misty Michelle Carson of Winfield, was stillborn March 19, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Winfield.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Geuda Springs Cemetery. Pastor David Lemke will officiate.
Survivors in addition to her parents are her maternal grandmother, Beverly Carson, Geuda Springs; paternal grandfather, Houy Phengphanh, Montgomery, Ala.; and her maternal great-grandparents, Charles Carson Sr. and Esther Carson, of Arkansas City.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Blanche Lawson
Blanche Lawson, 80, of Winfield, longtime Burden resident, died Friday morning, March 19, 1999.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until service time Tuesday.
Memorials have been established with First Baptist Church in Burden and for Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Lawson was born Dec. 3, 1918, on a farm at Davison, Okla., to Joseph H. and Della (Miller) Mounts. Raised and educated in Oklahoma, she attended the Witcher grade school and later Britton, Okla., High School.
In 1935 she moved to Kansas from Britton. On April 8, 1937, she married Oscar F. Lawson at her parents' home in Winfield. The couple established their first home on their farm southwest of Burden.
A homemaker, she was actively involved in the farming and ranching operation with her husband on their Silver Creek farm. She began employment at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield in 1968 and retired in 1993, following 25 years of service in the dietary department.
Mr. Lawson died Dec. 16, 1975. Mrs. Lawson had lived in the home of her daughter, Mary Jo Stuckey, since May 1997.
She had been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Burden since 1945.
Survivors include a son, John Lawson, Burden; two daughters, Ruth Lundy, Gardner, and Mary Jo Stuckey, Winfield; a brother, John Mounts, Oklahoma City; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
