Timothy Dunnavent

WICHITA - Timothy Lee Dunnavent, 44, custodian, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 27, 1999, in Columbia Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at South Broadway Baptist Church. Pastor Terry Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in the Waco Township Cemetery.

Friends may call at Smith Mortuary, Derby, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Dunnavent was born June 24, 1954, in Wichita.

Survivors include his wife, Kristi Louann Dunnavent, Wichita; his parents, Bennie David and Grace Belle Dunnavent, both of Haysville; a son, Terry Dunnavent, two daughters, Laura Dunnavent and Niki Dunnavent, all of Wichita, a brother, David Dunnavent, Haysville; a sister, Angela Dunnavent, Wichita; and a stepsister, Jodi Murray.

LaVonta Waggoner

OXFORD - LaVonta Louise Waggoner, 92, of Belle Plaine, died Jan. 29, 1999, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kendall Utt will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home in Wellington from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday.

A memorial has been established with the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the church or the funeral home.

Waggoner was born Aug. 20, 1906, in Fort Cobb, Okla., to Fred Francis and Samantha (Hughes) Sprout.

On March 17, 1929, she married Frank Waggoner in Medford, Okla. She had lived in Belle Plaine since her marriage.

At age 13 she was baptized at Prairie Couter Church northwest of Wellington by the Rev. Russell Throckmorton. She later transferred her membership to the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church.

For 45 years she worked in the education program of the Belle Plaine church with the children and youth departments. She worked for 15 years in the Winfield district of the Methodist Church in programs related to children. She traveled throughout the conference and out of state teaching prayer groups, workshops, clinics and leadership groups.

She was conference secretary of children's work for several years and later director of children's work. In her local church she was president of WS&S, youth sponsor and Cub Scout den mother.

After retirement the Waggoners moved to town where she cared for her husband until his death on March 23, 1979.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Waggoner and Ted Waggoner, both of Belle Plaine; a stepdaughter, Maxine Oleson, Belle Plaine; her twin sister, LeVera Williams, Wichita; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Irene Leach

OXFORD - Irene Leach, 91, of Oxford, died Jan. 28, 1999, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oxford Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday morning before services.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Leach was born Aug. 18, 1907, in Hewins, to James Robert and Sarah Jane (Henderson) Stewart. When she was a child, the family moved to Jay, Okla., where she was raised and educated.

On May 10, 1924, she married William McKinley Leach in Jay, Okla. The Leaches moved to Oxford in 1941 from Avan, Okla. Mr. Leach died on April 14, 1984.

Mrs. Leach had been the head alterations person at the J.C. Penney and M.B. Kerr stores in Winfield. After her retirement from Kerr's, she continued to do seamstress and quilting work.

She had been a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jane Leach, Oxford, and Kenny Sue Bolieu of Navasota, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Three sons, James Edward Leach, Ivan Dale Leach and Billy Max Leach, preceded her in death.

Terry Fleetwood

ARKANSAS CITY - Terry Fleetwood, 55, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 29, 1999, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Fleetwood was born Nov. 11, 1943, in Frederick, Md., to Terrance and Vivian Fleetwood.

He had lived in Arkansas City for several years.

Charles Washburn

Services for Charles M. "Charlie" Washburn, 94, who died Jan. 26, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Warren Smith and Donnie Davis officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Marilyn Buffum was the organist. Special vocal music was "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "Blessed Assurance."

Honorary casket bearers were Leonard Biddle, Edd Carlson, Ed Flower, George Lancaster and Adron Shockey.

Casket bearers were Darron Aldridge, Charles Cadwell, Irl Fife, Bob Jennings, Lawrence Miller, Gary Moore and Bob Seley.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Treva Dooley

SEVERY - Treva Lee Dooley, 66, of Severy, died Jan. 29, 1999, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Dooley was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Alicia, Ark., to Samuel and Gladys L. (Burgin) Hunt. She attended school and lived her early years in Arkansas.

On May 5, 1960, she married Harold Edwin Dooley in Enid, Okla. They lived in Kansas, Iowa, Colorado and Arkansas before settling in Douglass in 1977.

She was employed in composite lay-up at Beech Aircraft for many years.

In 1993 the Dooleys retired and moved to Severy. Her husband died June 13, 1994.

Dooley attended Severy Baptist Church for several years.

Survivors include three sons, Paco Dooley, Parker, Colo., Charles Dooley, Wichita, and Terry Dooley, Burrton; a brother, Larry Hunt, Black Rock, Ark.; her sisters, Betty Hawkins, Flint, Mich., Doris Garrison, Simi Valley, Calif., and Opal Whittaker, Severy; and four granddaughters.

A daughter died in infancy.

Thomas Porter

Thomas H. Porter, 66, of 1602 Elizabeth, Winfield, longtime employee of the Winfield Daily Courier, died Feb. 1, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Kansas Elks Training Center. Contributions may be made at the funeral home or the Winfield Elks Lodge.

Porter was born May 16, 1932, in Winfield, to Harvey F. and Mary Helen (Carlton) Porter. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.

In 1950 he entered the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the USS Philippine Sea aircraft carrier as an aircraft direction officer.

Following discharge in 1954 he returned to Winfield and was employed briefly at Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita.

On Feb. 18, 1955, he married Cleta Defore in Udall. The couple resided in Winfield throughout their nearly 44 years of marriage.

In 1956 Porter began employment at the Winfield Daily Courier. He was serving as production superintendent at the time of his retirement in December 1997. Since retirement he had worked part time at O'Kelley's Sports Bar in Winfield.

A member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield for over 38 years, he was affiliated with American Legion Post 10 in Winfield. He was a devoted and longtime member of Winfield Elks Lodge 732, serving in all chairs during his tenure. He was a member of the Elks Ritual Team and was serving as lodge secretary at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Cleta Porter, Winfield; two sons, Britt Porter and Blake Porter, both of Winfield; a daughter, Renae Parker, Lincoln, Ala.; three brothers, Phil Porter, Don Porter and Ken Porter, all of Winfield; eight sisters, Myrtle Barker and Helen Ann Dickerson, both of Arkansas City, Dorothy Placette, Rosenburg, Texas, Juanita Gottlob, Confer, Colo., Norma Hayden, Auburn, Wash., Carol Stoddard, Newton, and Sandra Berwert and Andrea Shepherd, both of Winfield; and eight grandchildren.

Leo Cummings

Leo Melvin Cummings, 85, of 1417 Maris, Winfield, died Feb. 1, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Youth Hunter Education through Sporting Friends in Cowley County. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cummings was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Woods County, near Alva, Okla., to Charles Edwin and Olive Modesta (Cunningham) Cummings. In 1920 the family moved to Winfield and soon settled on a farm in the Burden community. He received his education in Burden High School and he and his brother, Charles, provided meat for the family on daily hunting trips. Following graduation from Burden High School, he was employed with the Civilian Conservation Corps in building the National Parks System.

On July 4, 1939, he married Lola Emiline Beltz. They divorced in 1960.

Cummings worked for several years as delivery man for the McConn Sisters Bakery and later at Socony Oil Co. in Winfield.

During World War II he began employment at Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita. He resided in the Akron community and in Winfield until his retirement from Beech in 1978, following 37 years of service. After retirement he moved to a farm on Silver Creek east of Winfield and returned to Winfield in 1996.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Union and was affiliated with the North American Hunting Club.

Survivors include two sons, Melvin Joe Cummings, Winfield, and Max Leroy Cummings, Cedar Vale; two brothers, Frank Cummings and Charles Cummings, both of Winfield; two sisters, Margie Castle, Placerville, Calif., and Lois Favort, Zionsville, Ind.; three grandsons, one granddaughter and three great-granddaughters, and a cousin, Alvin Cummings, Winfield, who was raised with Leo Cummings.

A son, James Richard Cummings, preceded him in death.
