Richard Gibson

Dr. Richard G. Gibson, 85, of Winfield, died Jan. 7, 1999, at his vacation home in Green Mountain Falls, Colo.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and Southwestern College.

Gibson was born June 8, 1913, in Winfield, to Dr. P.W. and Katharine (Strack) Gibson. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School, Southwestern College and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo.

He practiced as an osteopathic physician in Winfield for 50 years before retiring in 1985.

On June 19, 1937, he married Betty Lowther in Dodge City. They resided in Winfield throughout their marriage. She died March 19, 1995.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Gibson was a ruling elder and deacon at the church. Long active in the Kansas Association of Osteopathic Medicine, he served as president of that group during the time it was instrumental in forming legislation to create the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, of which he was a charter member.

Gibson was a member and president of the Winfield Lions Club, Winfield Oratorio Society and Winfield chapter of the American Red Cross. He also served on regional boards and committees of the American Red Cross. For many years, he played trumpet in the Winfield Municipal Band.

Following his retirement he was a volunteer for William Newton Memorial Hospital, Central Baptist Church Crisis Closet and Whittier Elementary School where he tutored and read to first-graders for nine years.

Survivors include two sons, Benn Gibson and Dr. Don Phillip Gibson, both of Winfield; two daughters, Judy Burke, Peterborough, N.H., and Janie Lewis, Winfield; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his companion, Viola Schwantes.

Jason Goff

Jason Dean Goff, 21, of 3 Renfrew Road, Winfield, died Jan. 8, 1999, in an automobile accident.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Swim Club and Kansas Society for Crippled Children, 106 W. Douglas, Suite 900, Wichita, KS 67202. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Goff was born Jan. 9, 1977, in Winfield, to Floyd and Brenda (Setzkorn) Goff. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1995 and attended Central of McPherson College and Cowley County Community College.

In high school he was on the tennis, swimming and soccer teams and a member of the high school band and the Youth Advisory Council.

At the time of his death, he was employed as a machinist for Tweeco Products Inc. in Wichita.

Survivors include his parents, Floyd and Brenda Goff, Winfield; a brother, Eric Goff, in the U.S. Army; a sister, Kaycie Goff, Winfield; and his grandparents, Elmer and Vi Setzkorn, Rock, and Kenneth and Rose Anne Goff, Arkansas City.

Erma McCaslin

Services for Erma Lee McCaslin, 82, who died Jan. 4, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music selections included "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great Thou Art."

Honorary casket bearers were McCaslin's grandchildren. Casket bearers were Johnny and Richard Burdick, Joe Gilkerson and Melvin Ruggles.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation.

Alice Tart

ARKANSAS CITY - Alice Tart, 78, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 8, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Parker Cemetery. Pastor Richard Coldwell will officiate.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Tart was born Aug. 20, 1920, in McRae, Ga., to Walter Thomas and Lucy Smith. She graduated from McRae High School and moved in 1945 to Arkansas City from McRae.

On Feb. 9, 1974, she married Billy Byron Tart in Arkansas City.

Tart was an aide at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital for many years until her retirement in the early 1980s.

She had attended both the Arkansas City Baptist Temple and Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Tart, Arkansas City; a son, Robert Lewis, Flower Mound, Texas; a daughter, Judy White, Marietta, Okla.; a stepson, Dennis Tart, Atlanta, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Kendra Stockton, Arkansas City, and Kathy Bergkamp, Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Rollo Smith and Preston Smith, both of McRae, and Theo Smith, Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Dot Smith, Atlanta, Ga., and Ruby Braswell, McRae; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Betty Allen

Services for Betty Marie Allen, 72, who died Dec. 31, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

Vocal music included "How Great Thou Art," "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers were Gene Bair, Orville Bair, Don Henderson, Alan Dale Leith, Steve Leith and Mark Martin.

Memorials have been established with the Dexter Masonic Lodge and the American Cancer Society.

Ida Young

EL DORADO - Ida Parscal Young, 90, of El Dorado, died Jan. 10, 1999, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Belle Vista Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Unit of Knutson Manor. Contributions can be made through Carlson Funeral Home.

Young was born Nov. 18, 1908, in Decatur City, Iowa, to John Henry and Eva Rosa (Moon) Sinclair.

On Dec. 21, 1926, she married Howard Parscal in El Dorado. He died July 9, 1955.

A longtime El Dorado area resident, she was employed as a certified nurse's aide before retiring in 1992.

Young was a member of the Baptist Church, Eastern Star and Elks Lodge and American Legion auxiliaries.

Survivors include a son, Tony Parscal, Marion; three daughters, Elsie Carson, El Dorado, Norma Riley, Winfield; and Pat Large, Independence, Mo.; 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Howard Parscal Jr. and Donald Parscal, preceded her in death.

Tammie Sue Swopes

Tammie Sue Swopes, 35, of Winfield, formerly of Arkansas City, died Jan. 11, 1999, at Southwind Community Alternatives Home in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Maple City Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Southwind Community Alternatives Home and Cowley County Developmental Services. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City.

Swopes was born Dec. 9, 1963, in Arkansas City, to John Lee and Wanda Sue (Ball) Swopes. She lived most of her life at Winfield State Hospital and the last several years in the Southwind Community Alternatives Home.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, John and Carol Swopes, her mother and stepfather, Wanda and Jim Barker, and two brothers, Monte Swopes and Darren Swopes, all of Arkansas City; her grandmother, Pearl Swopes, Newkirk, Okla.; three stepbrothers and three stepsisters.

Richard Gibson

Services for Dr. Richard Gibson, 85, who died Jan. 7, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Steven H. Souther and Diane Massey officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Organ music, played by James Leland, included "How Bright Appears the Morning Star," "Chaconne in F minor," "These Are the Holy Ten Commandments," "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying," "Fugue in C major" and "Andante" from Handel's Concerto No. 1.

The congregation sang "The Church's One Foundation."

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and Southwestern College.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jason Goff

Services for Jason Dean Goff, 21, who died Jan. 8, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 11 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Sandy Yount was the organist. Matt Lann, Tim Wetterhus, Chris Helmer and Jason Teubner were instrumentalists.

Music included "I Know that My Redeemer Lives," "Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling," "O That the Lord Would Guide My Ways," "Amazing Grace" and "Lift High the Cross." Soloist Keith Chuvala sang "On Eagle's Wings."

A special "Prayer for Jason," written by Lindsay Marshall, was included in the service.

Casket bearers were Erik Goff, Michael Bredal, Matt Lann, Jason Murray, Tim Wetterhus and Dustin Widener.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Swim Club and the Kansas Society for Crippled Children.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Victor Shay

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Victor M. "Vic" Shay, 84, a longtime resident of Bartlesville, Okla., and retired accountant with Phillips Petroleum Co., died Jan. 11, 1999, at the family home.

Services will be held in the Colonial Chapel of the Neekamp Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Thursday. Dr. Michael G. McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville.

A memorial has been established with the Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 1174, Bartlesville, OK 74005.

Shay was born Sept. 16, 1914, in Belle Plaine, to Clyde C. and Winifred E. (Martin) Shay. He was educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School. He continued his education at Southwestern College and Tulsa University and graduated from Oklahoma State University.

In 1932 he married Sue Ebberts in Severy. They moved to Bartlesville in 1942. There Mr. Shay worked as an accountant for Phillips Petroleum until he retired in 1975. The Shays moved to California where they resided until 1986 when they returned to Bartlesville. Mr. Shay had been in failing health for the past 10 years.

He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church, was founder and former director of Bartlesville Boy Scout Troop 11 and had served as director of the Bartlesville Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was instrumental in establishing the Washington County Red Cross Disaster Group which he served as chairperson; was a member of the 66 Choral Men's Group and a former member of the First Baptist Church choir, had taught Sunday school for 18 years and was a member of the Bartlesville Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Shay, Bartlesville; a son, Michael D. Shay, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a daughter, Vicki Walls, Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Clyde W. Shay, Winfield; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
