Guilford Johnson
Guilford M. Johnson, 84, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died Dec. 8, 1998, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Johnson was born Sept. 13, 1914, near Cedar Vale. He was raised and received his early education in Parsons. As a child, he moved to Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. During the 1950s and 1960s he was employed at Winfield Floral's greenhouse.
He retired in the early 1980s and resided in the Island Park area before moving to Walnut Towers.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Byron Van Cleave
Byron J. Van Cleave, 25, a resident of Creative Community Living at 2730 E. 12th, Winfield, died Dec. 8, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Winfield State Hospital Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and until noon Monday.
A memorial has been established with the Creative Community Living Endowment Fund.
Van Cleave was born Nov. 19, 1973, to Byron A. Swinney and Dianna S. Van Cleave. He resided at Vernon Manor Children's Home in Fort Wayne, Ind., before moving to Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in 1979.
He had lived at the hospital for nearly 18 years before moving to CCL on Jan. 15, 1997.
Survivors include his friends and caregivers at Creative Community Living.
Leonard Simmons
Services for Leonard A.W. Simmons, 77, who died Dec. 8, 1998, were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 10, 1998, in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Connie Wooldridge officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Rose Marie Watt was the organist. David Watters sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."
Casket bearers were Bob Biddle, Dick Biddle, Bill Coats, Donnie Curfman, Jim Gardner and Steve Hall.
Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc.
M.E. Jenkins
Services for the Rev. M.E. Jenkins, 80, who died Dec. 7, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 11 in the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Warren Smith and Bill Shook officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Marilyn Buffum was the organist. Jim and Jan Miller sang "How Great Thou Art." Beverly Morgan sang "Near to the Heart of God." Christie Muret and Jenny Muret Bate sang "The Lord's Prayer."
Casket bearers were Darren Delp, Jeff Delp, Jim Delp, Leonard Kukuk, Harold Muret and Keel White.
A memorial has been established with the American Kidney Foundation.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Special vocal music was "Amazing Grace."

Frances McCreary
TIGARD, Ore. - Frances McCreary, 96, of Tigard, Ore., longtime resident of Winfield, died Dec. 9, 1998, in Tigard.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard. Burial will follow in Willamette National Cemetery
in Portland, Ore.
McCreary was born May 17, 1902, in Verden, Okla., and then moved to Winfield where she grew up.
On May 7, 1920, she married Walter McCreary. In 1944 they moved to Tigard. Mr. McCreary died in 1963. A son, Walter McCreary, was killed in World War II.
Mrs. McCreary was a member of the Metzger Garden Club.
Survivors include three sons, John McCreary, Tigard, Ore., James McCreary, Milwaukie, Ore., and Jerry McCreary, Hays, Va.; two daughters, Eunice Haines, Altus, Okla., and Jeanne Schaffer, Trinity, Texas; 20 grandchildren and great- and great-grandchildren "too many too count."
Roy Edgington
MOLINE - Roy M. Edgington, 99, longtime resident of Moline, died Dec. 10, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 14 in the Moline United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gerald Manley officiated. Burial was in Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Edgington was born Sept. 8, 1899, at Columbus Junction, Iowa, to Chester and Mary (Fuller) Edgington. He attended school and worked on the family farm. In 1922 he moved to Kansas where he made his home at Moline.
On Aug. 19, 1923, he married Nellie Winifred Eckert in Longton.
Edgington was employed as a gas jobber by O.R. Ames in Moline before working briefly at a Moline bakery owned by his wife's parents. He and his wife owned and operated a farm west of Moline until moving back to town in 1946.
The Edgingtons owned and operated a service station in Moline and also owned and operated a skating rink in Cherry Vale. After operating the businesses for several years, Edgington began work as a carpenter in the Moline community. He continued in the profession until he was more than 90 years of age.
His wife died May 27, 1998.
Edgington was a longtime member of the Moline United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Jim Edgington, Wichita; two daughters, Irene Scheuerman, Winfield, and Phyllis Pollard, Lewisville, Texas; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Bertha Evans
BLACKWELL, Okla. - Bertha Lee Evans, 84, of Blackwell, died Dec. 12, 1998, at Blackwell Regional Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Ryser will officiate. Burial will be in Blackwell Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Chris and Chase Fetters, Mark Hill, David and Craig Canedy, Scott Gerboth, Stuart Schale and Ross Day.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Blackwell.
Evans was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Chanute, to Charles Louis and Nora Belle (Taylor) Hackler. When she was five, the family moved to Blackwell where she attended public schools.
On Nov. 10, 1930, she married Sherman Edgar Evans in Perry, Okla., and they settled in Blackwell. In 1952 they moved to Winfield where they lived until moving to Wellington in 1965. Following her husband's retirement in 1967, they returned to Blackwell. He died Aug. 11, 1968.
Evans was a member of the Blackwell First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Evans, Winfield; three daughters, Nancy Fetters, Blackwell, Dorothy Hill, Wichita, and Charlene Canedy, Augusta; a sister, Agnes Eppes, Moore, Okla.; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Noreen Hawkins
CEDAR VALE - Noreen Hawkins, 81, of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 13, 1998, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Vale Church of Christ. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery. Wheeler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Hawkins was born April 15, 1917, in Cambridge, to William and Nora (Hawley) Martling.
On May 12, 1937, she married Ray Hawkins. He died in 1989. A son, Gerald Hawkins, also preceded her in death.
Hawkins had been employed at the Cedar Vale hospital for 15 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Howard Hawkins, Auburn, and Doyle Hawkins, Argyle, Texas; two daughters, Phyllis Hollister and Debra Wheat, both of Augusta; two brothers, Frank Martling, Cocoa, Fla., and Dean Martling, Arkansas City; five sisters, Eva Gatton, Dexter, Lucille Mueller and Ruby Howard, both of Wichita, Nellie Hasting, Lees Summit, Mo., and Neva Nelson, Las Cruces, N.M.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bobbie Ingram
BELLE PLAINE - Bobbie Eugene Ingram, 77, of Belle Plaine, died Dec. 11, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 14 at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home. Don Laughary officiated. Burial was in Belle Plaine Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Belle Plaine Library Children's Book Fund.
Ingram was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Wichita, to William E. and Lilly Mae (Hartman) Ingram.
On Sept. 2, 1949, he married Patricia Blankenship in Winfield. She died in May 1998.
A farmer, Ingram was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, Rex Ingram, Belle Plaine; two daughters, Dana Morris, Wichita, and Renee Jones, Belle Plaine; a brother, Bill Ingram, and two sisters, Edna Burton and Vivian Becker, all of Wichita; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
