Florence Jones
BLACKWELL, Okla. - Florence Irene Jones, 90, of Blackwell, Okla., formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 7, 1998, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell. The Rev. Daryl Donovan will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery
in Winfield at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Blackwell.
Jones was born Jan. 25, 1908, in Winfield, to John Riley and Rillie Jane (Hill) Mitchell. She grew up in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School. She also received a bachelor of science degree from Southwestern College.
Following graduation, she began teaching in a rural school north of Winfield. She taught in other rural schools as well as in Wichita public schools.
On July 23, 1951, she married Clarence E. Jones in Pawhuska, Okla., and they settled in Blackwell.
Mrs. Jones began teaching in Bethel School until 1954 when she began teaching in the Blackwell school system. She taught there until 1962 when she and her husband moved to Covington, Okla. In 1981 they returned to Blackwell to make their home. Mr. Jones died on Nov. 28, 1994.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the American Education Association, the National Education Association, the Kay County Retired Teachers Association and the Blackwell First Christian Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Ash, Ellinwood, and Gladys Lahti, Fresno, Calif., and a nephew, Roy Mitchell, Winfield.
Leonard Simmons
Leonard A.W. Simmons, 77, of Route 1, Winfield, died Dec. 8, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until service time on Thursday.
Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and Hospice, Inc. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Simmons was born Jan. 23, 1921, on a ranch near Sun City, to Jesse and Reva (Showalter) Simmons. As a child he moved to Kay County, Okla., where he was educated. In 1938 he came to the Burden area where he worked in farming.
On April 26, 1941, he married Neva Hall at Newkirk, Okla. They made their first home on a farm near Maple City and later lived in Wichita briefly before moving to Winfield in 1942. They moved to their farm in the Grandview community north of Winfield in 1946.
Simmons began employment at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita in 1950. He retired from sheet metal fabrication in 1983, following 32 1/2 years service.
A lifelong farmer and stockman, he attended Grandview United Methodist Church and was also affiliated with the Rock-Fairview Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Neva Simmons, Winfield; three sons, Marion Simmons and Max Simmons, both of Winfield, and Gary Simmons, Burden; two brothers, Bob Simmons, Winfield, and Vernie Simmons, Wellington; three sisters, Frances Curfman, Ponca City, Okla., Freda Fry, Turpin, Okla., and Darlene Hiltzman, Oxford; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Russell Calcote
The Rev. L. Russell Calcote, 78, of 221 W. 10th St., Winfield, died Dec. 8, 1998, at Heritage Village in Rose Hill.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery
under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Winfield.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Calcote was born July 24, 1920, near Brookhaven, in Lincoln County Miss., to Boyd and Mattie (Golden) Calcote. He was raised and educated at Loyd Star, Miss., where he graduated from Loyd Star High School in 1938. He began farming as a youth.
On April 8, 1940, he married Hazel Inez Fore, and the couple made their first home in Jackson, Miss.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Calcote served with the U.S. Army in Colorado and Texas.
Following discharge, he began his career education in colleges in Wesson, Miss., and Willmore, Ky., and he completed seminary training at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Upon ordination in the Methodist Church in 1950, he began as pastor of a church in Little York, Ind. Throughout his 33 years of ministry, he also pastored churches in Mississippi, Georgia and Texas, in addition to Kansas churches in Nickerson, Cheney, Mankato, Bison, Solomon and Hillsboro. He retired from active ministry of the United Methodist Church in 1983.
In 1987, he began employment as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service at Tribune and later at Sterling. Following retirement, the Calcotes moved to Granby, Mo., in 1987. They had resided in Winfield since 1988.
A member of the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church, his was also affiliated with the Masonic Lodge at Solomon and the Lions Club at Hillsboro. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Calcote, Winfield; two sons, Victor L. Calcote, Wichita, and Ronald M. Calcote, Farmington, N.M.; three daughters, Elrea Reinking, Arkansas City, Elizabeth, St. Charles, Mo., and Katrina Tamsen, Eagle, Colo.; two brothers, Denver Calcote, Laurel, Miss., and David Calcote, Loyd Star, Miss.; a sister, Margaret Michael, Absecon, N.J.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Leo Chrisman
SEDAN - Leo Chrisman, 91, of Sedan, died Dec. 3, 1998, at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center in Coffeyville.
Services were Dec. 7, 1998, in the Graves-Baird Chapel. The Rev. Dois Nix officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research and The American Diabetes Association.
Chrisman was born Oct. 26, 1907, in Sedan, to Andrew Frank and Della Barbara (Lantz) Chrisman.
On April 7, 1928, he married Grace Almeda McGill in Independence. She died in March 1984.
Mr. Chrisman was a fuel distributor.
Survivors include three sons, Mack Chrisman and Ross Chrisman, both of Sedan, and Tim Chrisman, Winfield; three daughters, Caroline Dye, Independence, Delena Sanborn, Sedan, and Janice Chrisman, Bartlesville, Okla.; two sisters, Dorothy Alford, Independence, and Nellie Elliott, Sedan; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Pauline Reed
LOVELAND, Colo. - Pauline M. Reed, 93, of Loveland, formerly of Wellington, retired teacher's aide, died Dec. 8, 1998.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wellington.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Survivors include two sons, Ron Hamlin, Wellington, and Howard Hamlin, Garden City; a daughter, Lois Jennings, Loveland; a brother, Murray R. Clarke, San Leandro, Calif.; a sister, Phyllis Whorton, Wichita; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Helena Hasty
MOLINE - Helena Elvira Hasty, 92, of Moline, died Dec. 6, 1998, at Elk Manor Nursing Home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Moline Medical Clinic. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Hasty was born May 17, 1906, north of Moline, to Homer Selden and Cora (Goss) Adams. She attended Wildcat rural school and grew up in the Moline community.
In the late 1920s she married George Baker. This marriage ended in divorce. She later married Fred Gors who preceded her in death.
On Aug. 23, 1966, she married Ed Hasty in Howard. They made their home in Howard until his death on Dec. 20, 1985.
Hasty lived in Lexington, Neb., from 1988 until returning to Moline in 1990. She had been a homemaker and provided home nursing care for the elderly.
Survivors include a grandson, Bobby Hasty, Derby, and a stepnephew, Harold Hufford, Howard.
Floyd Wilson
COLCORD, Okla. - Floyd Samuel Wilson, 83, of Colcord, died Dec. 8, 1998, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Wasson Memorial Chapel, Siloam Springs, Ark. Brother Edward Billups and the Rev. Tom Lazenby will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Wilson was born July 8, 1915, in Conway, Mo., to John and Betty (King) Wilson. Formerly of Winfield, he had been a resident of Colcord since 1940.
A farmer, he attended Countryside Bible Church in Colcord. His first wife, Laura Bishop, died in 1978. He married Irene Londagin on Nov. 27, 1983, in Jay, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Wilson, Colcord; three sons, Junior Wilson and Jim Wilson, both of Gentry, Ark., and James Hagar, Jay, Okla.; two daughters, Mary Jane Pruitt, Siloam Springs, and Lana Hurt, Colcord; two brothers, Alvie Wilson, Winfield, and Junior Wilson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Aslee Linnscott, Lakeview, Ore., and Mabel Bowlby, Winfield; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Howard Parsons
Howard Parsons, 84, of Good Samaritan Village, died Dec. 9, 1998, in Winfield.
Private services will be held later. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Parsons was born May 5, 1914, in Watago, Ill., to Walter Walker and Lizzie Edmund (Waters) Parsons. He graduated from Winfield High School.
He worked for IGA as a butcher for several years, then as a cook for various cafes in the area and finally in maintenance at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center before retiring in the 1970s.
Survivors include two sons, James Parsons and Dennis Parsons, both of California; and a nephew, Wayne Wilt, Winfield.
