James Farrar
ARKANSAS CITY - James Edward Farrar, 51 of Arkansas City, died Nov. 26, 1998, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Jesse A. Kindred will officiate. Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide military honors.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Farrar was born April 17, 1947, in Arkansas City, to Elsie Mae Farrar. He was raised by his mother and grandfather, Joseph W. Farrar, and later by his foster parents, Ruby and Arlo Lewis. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City and later attended Cowley County Community College vocational school.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He worked at several area businesses, including Powers Roofing, New Era Mill, Skyline and Brown and Root Construction. Most recently he has been employed with Robb Carroll Painting and Sandblasting.
He was a life member of Shelton-Beaty Post 18 American Legion and Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary Waterman, Jackie Lewis, and Helen Beard, all of Arkansas City.
Joseph Blackstock
ALHAMBRA, Calif. - Joseph R. Blackstock, 78, market research executive, died Nov. 25, 1998, at his home in Alhambra.
Blackstock and his wife, Doris, had spent the previous week visiting in the home of her brother, the Rev. Forrest J. Robinson, of Winfield.
Services are pending.
Linda Johns
ARKANSAS CITY - Linda Charlene Johns, 48, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 28, 1998, at Medicalodge East.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 tonight at Hawks Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Francis Cox will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.
An education fund has been established for Johns' daughters. Contributions can be made at the funeral home or Commercial Federal Bank.
Johns was born July 21, 1950, in Arkansas City, to Charles F. and Wilma (Pingry) Demaree. She lived in Arkansas City her entire life.
On Aug. 10, 1985, she married Curtis Dale Johns in Newkirk, Okla.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Johns, Arkansas City; two sons, Michael Merchant, Fairfax, Okla., and Tracey Johns, Arkansas City; two daughters, Mindy Nicole Johns and Stormie RaeNae Johns, both of Arkansas City; her mother and stepfather, Wilma and Sadie Voth, Arkansas City; two brothers, Ricky Demaree, Arkansas City, and Danny Brubaker, Medicine Lodge; and four grandchildren.
Elvin Hills
GEUDA SPRINGS - Elvin A. Hills, 68, of Geuda Springs, died Nov. 29, 1998, at the South Haven Guest Home.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Hill Cemetery
at Ashton. Elder John Watson will officiate.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Hills was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Sumner County, to Fred W. and Laura (Madison) Hills. He lived in the Ashton-Geuda Springs area for many years and farmed near Geuda Springs until retiring in 1984. He then moved to Arkansas City and had lived at the South Haven Guest Home for the last two years.
Survivors include a son, Steven Hills, Wichita; two daughters, Linda Jane Hills, Stillwater, Okla., and Janet Marie Hills, Dodge City; three brothers, Aubrey Hills, Geuda Springs, Oral Hills, Edwardsville, Ill., and his twin, Eldon Hills, Stillwater, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
Cleo Novak
AUGUSTA - Cleo E. Novak, 93, retired cook at Walnut Manor and 54 Restaurant, died Nov. 27, 1998, at Augusta Medical Complex.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Hillside Funeral Home until 5 today.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.
In June 1966, she married John Novak in El Dorado.
Survivors include her husband, John Novak, and two daughters, Mary Cochran and Bonnie Selvadge, all of Augusta; a stepson, Johnny Novak, El Dorado; two stepdaughters, Ronda Lawrence, Belle Plaine, and Teresa Turner, Augusta; two brothers, Walter Cody, Augusta, and Frank Cody, El Dorado; three sisters, Hazel Mauk, Augusta, Alice Hollingsworth, Wichita, and Bessie White, Rose Hill; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Opal M. Clements
WICHITA - Opal M. Clements, 86, homemaker, of Wichita, died Nov. 28, 1998, in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in East Heights United Methodist Church and at 3:30 p.m. in Osage Garden Cemetery, Skiatook, Okla..
Memorials have been established with Alzheimer's Disease Research and East Heights United Methodist Church.
Clements was born June 26, 1912, in Sperry, Okla., to William Henry and Bessie Pointer.
Survivors include her husband, Sam Clements, Wichita; a brother, William Pointer, Disney, Okla.; and a sister, Maxine Cuessenberry, Wichita.
Ruth Cook
Services for Ruth B. Cook, 78, who died Nov. 22, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 27 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Steven Souther officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
near Arkansas City.
Music selections were "The Old Rugged Cross," "Blessed Assurance" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Joe Cook, Harlan Derifield, Brent Hubble, David Norton, Curt Schwaderer and Jim Sthole.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Emigdio Valle
AUGUSTA - Emigdio Fidel Valle Jr., 59, of Augusta, Koch Industries welder, died Nov. 28, 1998, near Winfield.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Augusta.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Valle, Augusta; a son, David Valle, Wichita; a daughter, Kathryn Tilson, Hutchinson; his father, Emigdio Valle Sr., Wichita; two brothers, Bob Valle, Valley Center, and Edward Valle, Knob Noster, Mo.; four sisters, Margie Ralph, Sara Smith, Marie Bosley and Salley Nestlerod, all of Wichita; and seven grandchildren.
LaVerne Dorminy
DUNEDIN, Fla. - LaVerne Dorminy, 78, of Dunedin, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 29, 1998, at a hospital in Clearwater, Fla.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater. Burial will be in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, also in Clearwater.

Dorminy was born Nov. 19, 1920, in Arkansas City, to A.O. "Orville" and Edna Putman. She was raised in Burden and Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.
During World War II she served with the WAVES of the U.S. Navy.
A retired secretary of the Veterans Administration in Bay Pines, Fla., she was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Clearwater and treasurer of the St. Theresa Guild there. She had moved from Key West, Fla., to Dunedin in 1955.
Survivors include her husband, Herman H. Dorminy, Dunedin; a brother, Herschel Putman, Wichita; and a sister, Phillis Tulk, Denton, Texas.
Larry Sluga
WATERLOO, Neb. - Retired Col. E.L. "Larry" Sluga, 83, of Waterloo, died Nov. 27, 1998, in Omaha, Neb.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Elk Falls Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate. Military services will be conducted by Ferguson-Speese American Legion Post 388 of Moline.
Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
Sluga was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Noble County, Ohio, to Gasper and Filipina Sluga. He graduated from Belle Valley High School in 1934 and from Ohio State University with an engineering degree and a Reserve Officers Training Corps commission. In 1942, he was called to active duty and commanded the 358th squadron of the 355th Fighter Group in Europe during World War II. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars in Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff of the Pentagon, as well as Logistics Command. Sluga retired from the Air Force in 1969.
On July 11, 1946, he married Irma Grace Ransom at Fort Jackson, S.C. She died March 3, 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Tanya Seemann, Waterloo; three brothers, Henry Sluga, San Jose, Calif., Leonard Sluga, Albuquerque, N.M., and Robert Sluga, Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Bill Langley
GRENOLA - Billy Dean "Bill" Langley, 62, of Grenola, died Nov. 28, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery
at Grenola. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate.

Langley was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Beatrice, Neb., to Sim Alvin and Mildred Irene (Williamson) Langley. He attended school in Nebraska for several years before moving with his family to Oregon.
In 1961 he joined the U.S. Army and served until 1963.
His marriage to Bernice Earlene Lowder ended in divorce.
During most of his life he worked as a dry wall installer in new home construction in the Portland, Ore., area. He later worked as a security officer until his retirement. He moved to Grenola in May 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Glen Anderson, Gresham, Ore., and Michael Langley, Grenola; three daughters, Teresia Anderson, Beaverton, Ore., and Cynthia Kiel and Dianna Langley, both of Grenola; and a sister, Carol Langley, Olympia, Wash.
