Mary Smith

LONGTON - Mary Reba Smith, 66, of Longton, died Nov. 5, 1998, at Halstead Hospital.

Services were planned for 1 p.m. today at the Maize United Methodist Church and 4 p.m. in Oak Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Cheryl Wertheimer and Lloyd G. Zimmerman officiated. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Elk Valley High School D.A.R.E. Program.

Smith was born April 11, 1932, at Busby, to Harley Ermine and Katherine Iris (Haggard) Gilbert. She graduated from Longton High School in 1949.

On May 1, 1950, she married Paul Sherwood Smith at Bentonville, Ark. They lived in Wichita until moving to Laverne, Okla., in 1970. They also lived in Caney, Yale, Okla., and Oak Valley before moving to Longton in 1992.

Her husband died June 30, 1992.

Smith was a member of the Friendly Dozen Club and attended the Longton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Pauline Ramsey, Longton, Pamela Kirk, Maize, and Patricia Heglin, Gate, Okla.; a son, John Smith, Springdale, Ark.; her mother, Iris Gilbert, Longton; a brother, Harley Gilbert, Fredonia; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

James Scrivner

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - James D. Scrivner, 61, of Williamsburg, died Nov. 5, 1998, in Williamsburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home with Kerry S. Hurff officiating.

Memorial donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, Peninsula Chapter, P.O. Box 120016, Newport News, Va. 23612-0016.

Scrivner was a manager for AT&T for 25 years before retiring from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He had been a water commissioner for Petaluma, Calif., and a member of several civil engineering organizations.

Scrivner was a deacon and past elder of the Church of Christ in Bridgewater, N.J., and a member of the Church of Christ in Williamsburg.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth K. Scrivner; two daughters, Jami Lynn Hurff, Dublin, Ohio, and Traci Ann King, Stewartsville, N.J.; a brother, Larry D. Scrivner, Washington; his stepmother, Bernice Scrivner, Winfield; and five grandchildren.

Dorothy Halverstadt

Dorothy Inez Halverstadt, 85, longtime Winfield and Cowley County resident, died Nov. 9, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and before service time Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Halverstadt was born Aug. 3, 1913, on a farm northeast of Winfield, to Ed and Arloah (Laffoon) Boyd. Raised and educated in the Winfield area, she graduated from Winfield High School in 1931. She later attended St. John's College.

As a young woman she was employed as bookkeeper for Stuber Brothers Ford of Winfield and later at Cessna Employees Credit Union in Wichita.

On Jan. 13, 1944, she married Rolland C. "Arkie" Halverstadt in Lawrence. They resided in Harlingen, Texas, while her husband was stationed there with the U.S. Army Air Force.

Following World War II, the couple lived in Winfield until moving to their farm south of Oxford in 1961. Halverstadt was employed for 15 years as bookkeeper for Snyder Clinic and later for 10 years at the clinic pharmacy. Following the Halverstadts' retirements, they returned to Winfield in 1984. He died Oct. 20, 1988.

Halverstadt was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254 Auxiliary and Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her son, John Halverstadt, and her sister, Marjorie Tilton, both of Winfield; and four grandchildren.

Bertha Biby

EUREKA - Bertha Maydean Biby, 73, of Eureka, died Nov. 8, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Eureka. Pastor Mike Krager will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Americus Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the New Life Assembly of God Church. Contributions can be made through the church or Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045-0595.

Biby was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Americus, to Edward and Clara (Gilner) Reaka. She graduated from Americus High School in 1943.

On Sept. 8, 1943, she married Wallace Eugene Biby in Wichita. They made their home in Wichita for over 24 years before moving to Eureka in 1987.

A homemaker, Biby was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace Biby, Eureka; seven sons, Dean Biby and Warren Biby, both of Tucson, Ariz., Chauncey Biby, Eureka, Marcus Biby, El Dorado, Russell Biby, Emporia, Richard Biby, Wichita, and Sam Biby, Winfield; a daughter, Clara Gaw, Olympia, Wash.; a brother, Byron Reaka, Reading; a sister, Ida Mae Reaka, Wichita; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Melinda Goates, preceded her in death.

Jake McClure

CAMBRIDGE - Ralph "Jake" McClure, 78, of Cambridge, died Nov. 10, 1998, at Knutson Manor Nursing Center in El Dorado.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery at Grenola.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and until service time Saturday.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Saddle Club and the Cambridge Senior Citizens. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

McClure was born Feb. 3, 1920, on a farm at Grand Summit in eastern Cowley County, to William Alexander and Bertha Elvina Adele McClure. He was raised in the Grand Summit community and graduated from Grenola High School in 1939. As a youth he began a long career as a cowboy and rancher.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Cavalry 137th Quartermaster Corps, shoeing horses and mules in the China/Burma theaters.

Following discharge, he returned to Kansas and for several years was employed on the Ferguson Ranch near Grenola.

On Feb. 14, 1946, he married Aldine Harris in Cambridge.

During the early 1950s, he worked on pipeline crews in Ohio while residing on a ranch at Grand Summit.

McClure was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1957 to 1982. He and his wife resided south of Winfield from 1969 until returning to their farm near Cambridge in 1982.

A cowboy, McClure began driving teams and wagons in parades and at area functions in 1968 and gave rides to countless numbers of children over the years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Winfield and was affiliated with Winfield American Legion Post 10, the American Quarter Horse Association and the Texas Longhorn Association.

Survivors include his wife, Aldine McClure, Riverview Manor in Oxford; a son, Ralph Leroy McClure, Miami Lakes, Fla.; two daughters, Velma Larimer, El Dorado, and Mary Owen, Oxford; a brother, Elmer McClure, Tahlequah, Okla.; two sisters, Adele Day and Opal Fromm, both of Grandbury, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Mai Phengchanhone

Mai Phengchanhone, 44, of 706 E. Seventh, Winfield, died Nov. 7, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Phengchanhone was born Aug. 6, 1954, in Sayabouri, Laos, to Phanh and Siam Bounyavong. She attended schools in Sayabouri.

On April 2, 1973, she married Thai Phengchanhone in Sayabouri. She had lived in San Diego before moving to Winfield in June 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Thai Phengchanhone, and two daughters Villay "Lai" Khamsiharath and Chay Phengchanhone, all of Winfield; two sisters, Se Bounyavong, and Sy Bounyavong, both of Laos; and two grandchildren.

Christine Summers

MEXICO, Mo. - Christine Summers, 77, of Mexico, Mo., formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 10, 1998, at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Million-Taylor-Patton Funeral Home in Moberly, Mo. The Rev. Howard Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Summers was born Nov. 21, 1920, in Huntsville, Mo., to Robert M. and Ethel M. (Kribbs) Freeman.

A nurse's aide, she had moved from Winfield to Mexico two years ago. Her husband, Arlie Summers, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Carolyn Johnson, Winfield, and six sisters, Leona Burns, Evelyn Spicer, Edna McGuire and Ethelyn Kitchen, all of Mexico, Lenora Closser, Moberly, and Elsie Perkins, Fort Smith, Ark.

Ralph Tapia

Rafael Jose "Ralph" Tapia, 47, of 1503 Manning, Winfield, died Nov. 12, 1998, at 1419 Manning, Winfield.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Maybrier will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 1 p.m. Sunday until the Rosary is said at 7 that evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to help with expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or Commercial Federal Bank in Winfield.

Tapia was born Oct. 9, 1951, in Winfield, to Tobirio Jesus and Margarita B. (Barron) Tapia. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1971.

For 15 years he worked for Evelyn and Ray BumGardner and for 10 years at Fiesta Grande, while also finding time to do jobs in construction and carpentry. He also worked at the Walnut Valley Festival every year.

Survivors include his mother, Margarita Tapia, Winfield; nine brothers, Tony Tapia, John Tapia, James Tapia, Alfred Tapia and Edward Tapia, all of Winfield, Robert Barron, Winfield, David Martinez, Topeka, Jose Cornejo, Lawrence, and Ralph Cornejo, Winfield; and five sisters, Guadalupe Underkofler, Evanston, Wyo., Maria Chavez, Kane, Pa., and Berniece Tapia, Elisha Delozier and Susie Vargas, all of Winfield.
