John Tibbs
Services for John Edward Tibbs, 72, who died Oct. 21, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Akron Cemetery.
Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 conducted military rites.
Special music included a recording of "I Saw the Light" by Hank Williams Sr.
Casket bearers were Jerry Abbott, Russell Ashley, John Berndsen, Don and Ron Button and Justin Groom.
Memorials have been established with the LifeLine Program at William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Winfield Community Food Pantry.
Retta Hess
FAIRWAY - Retta Ann Hess, 68, of Fairway, formerly of Cambridge, died Oct. 25, 1998, at her home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cambridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with Cambridge Presbyterian Church. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.
Hess was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Lyons, to John and Lela (Redford) Dining. Following her mother's death, Retta was raised by Laurence and Elda Redford of Cambridge. She was educated in Cambridge schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1948. She later attended Pittsburg State Teachers College.
In 1951 she moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she was employed by the American Hereford Association.
On Feb. 12, 1956, she married Thomas J. Hess Jr. in Prairie Village. They resided in California.
The Hesses returned to the Cambridge are in 1971. She was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center until her retirement in 1992.
Her husband died in 1981. Hess had lived for the past year with her daughter and family in Fairway.
Survivors include a son, John Hess, Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Lori Hess, Fairway, and Michele Hess Hoeger, Cedar City, Utah; and five grandchildren.
Blanche Bobb
ARKANSAS CITY - Blanche Irene Bobb, 74, homemaker, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 25, 1998.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, 11800 W. Highway 54, Wichita.
A memorial has been established with Grouse Valley Manor, 315 S. Main, Dexter, KS 67005.
Bobb was born April 11, 1924, in Dexter. Her father was Winifred Calvin. Her mother is unknown.
Survivors include her husband, William H. Bobb, Arkansas City; three sons, Tim Bobb, Wichita, Ronald Wade Girod, Cambridge, and Jim Courtney, Bartlesville, Okla.; a daughter, Sandra Irene Giffin, Sedgwick; a brother, Glen Calvin, Salina; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Hazel Kempton
SULPHUR, Okla. - Hazel E. Kempton, 92, homemaker, of Sulphur, former longtime resident of Wilmot and Burden, died Oct. 26, 1998, at Sulphur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Grand Prairie Cemetery, northeast of Burden. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Kempton was born Jan. 17, 1906, near Cambridge, to Willard and Beatrice (Jamison) Bennett. She was raised and educated in the Mount Vernon and Cambridge communities.
On Oct. 1, 1925, she married Daniel C. Kempton in Winfield. The Kemptons made their first home in Burden and lived and farmed in the Wilmot community for many years.
Following her husband's death in 1965, Kempton moved to Burden. She was employed by the food service department of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from 1965 until her retirement in 1971. She had resided at Sulphur since 1989.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burden.
Survivors include her daughters, Nita Agler and Elaine Hamm, both of Sulphur; a sister, Audrey Hendrickson, El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth Samms
DOUGLASS - Ruth Irene Samms, 82, homemaker, of Douglass, former Winfield resident, died Oct. 27, 1998, at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday.
Samms was born April 3, 1916, in Chanute, to Elisha and Ida Newton. Raised and educated in Chanute, she resided in Osborn and Wichita for many years before moving to Winfield in the mid-1970s.
Samms had been employed at Cessna Aircraft Co. in Wichita and at Wal-Mart in Winfield prior to her retirement. She had resided in Houston for a year before moving to Douglass in early 1998.
Survivors include five daughters, Colleen Younger, Houston, Edna White, Wichita, Marjorie Johnson, Cambridge, Marlene Valentine, Douglass, and LeVeda Shive, Ponca City; a sister, Mildred Jewell, Wichita; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A son, Virgil Duane Kirby, preceded her in death.
Gene Alley
UDALL - Gene Alley, 70, of Udall, died Oct. 26, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Humane Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Alley was born April 4, 1928, in Winfield, to Glenn and Reba (Notestine) Alley. He was raised in the Oxford and Winfield area and graduated from Winfield High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then returned to Winfield and attended St. John's College.
On May 5, 1950, he married Sarah Irene Flick in Arkansas City. He worked at Boeing Aircraft for 35 years until retiring in 1987. The couple traveled throughout the United States for Boeing before moving to Udall in 1980.
Alley was a member of the Winfield American Legion and the Genealogy Society.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Alley, Udall; two daughters, Judy Tillman, Shady Side, Md., and Jeri Alley, Liberty, Mo.; two brothers, Dale Alley, Seligman, Mo., and Tom Alley, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; and a sister, Donna Light, Brownsville, Texas.
Ruby Bink
HOISINGTON - Ruby M. Bink, 79, homemaker, of Hoisington, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 27, 1998.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 tonight, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday.

Bink was born July 8, 1919, in Rogers, Ark., to Harry and Ruth (Craft) Harris. On June 9, 1938, she married William W. Bink in Bentonville, Ark. They moved from Winfield to Hoisington 57 years ago.
Survivors include her husband, William Bink, Hoisington; three daughters, Judith Bink, Winfield, Willetta James, Brandon, Fla., and Faith Navarro, Seligman, Mo.; a brother, Gary Marshall, Pratt; a sister, Joyce Waldroupe, Hot Springs, Ark.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Ellen Stone
CEDAR VALE - Ellen Belle Stone, 73, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 26, 1998, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Wauneta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale until 9 tonight.

Stone was born April 20, 1925, in Elgin, to James Paul and Loma (Johnston) Byrum. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1944.
On Oct. 28, 1942, she married William N. Stone in Camp Crowder, Mo.
Stone had been a psychiatric aide at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and also worked at the Sedan Greenhouse.
She was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, William Stone, Cedar Vale; six sons, William L. Stone, Terry Stone and Jim Stone, all of Blackwell, Okla., and Tim Stone, Don Stone and Dale Stone, all of Cedar Vale; four daughters, Caroline Contreras, Cedar Vale, Opal Everet, Holdenville, Okla., and Ruth Lane and Loma Smart, both of Sedan; a sister, Betty Berry, Lacy, Wash., her stepmother, Suzie Flo Byrum, Pasco, Wash.; 28 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Retta Hess
Services for Retta Ann Dining Hess, 68, who died Oct. 25, 1998, were held at 2 a.m. Oct. 28, 1998, at Cambridge Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Fran Broadhurst officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.
Vocal music included "The Old Rugged Cross," "Thank You" and "The Lord's Prayer," sung by Martin Rude. Keith Anglemyer was the pianist.
Casket bearers were Fred Hoeger, Zack Hoeger, Bob Redford, Russ Redford, J.D. "Skip" Redford and Neil Watt.
A memorial has been established with Cambridge Presbyterian Church.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
James Trent
James E. Trent, 64, of 510 E. 19th, Winfield, died Oct. 27, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Trent was born May 1, 1934, in Chanute, to Robert Harvey and Dorothy Dice Helm Trent. He was raised and educated in Chanute schools and attended Coffeyville High School.
As a young man, Mr. Trent was employed at a funeral home in Coffeyville. During that time he became a licensed minister of the Southern Baptist Church.
He served with the U.S. Air Force for four years as a radio operator in Okinawa.
On Feb. 9, 1957, he married Denzil Smith in Newkirk, Okla. They made their first home in Winfield. Mr. Trent was employed for several years at the Western Auto store.
For four years, the Trents lived in Arizona where Mr. Trent managed a Gov-way store. They later moved to Arkansas City where he worked as sexton of Riverview Cemetery
for 12 years. He retired in 1987 due to failing health.
The Trents returned to Winfield in 1993, and Mr. Trent managed the Winfield and Arkansas City flea markets for the past four years.
He attended the Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Denzil Trent, Winfield; two sons, Jimmy Trent, Wichita, and Don Trent, Cherokee, Iowa; a sister, Ellen Rowe, Arkansas City; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
