For several years, Hoskins worked as a security systems installer for ADT. He later served as a private contractor, installing home and business security systems.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Lewis and Judy Hoskins, LaCygne; his mother and stepfather, Sherri and Martin Heffner, Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Ronnie Hoskins, Arkansas City; his companion, Lee Ann Burk, and her son, both of Wichita; and his grandparents, Jack and Madeline Heffner,Winfield, William and Norma Little, Florida, and Albert and Elsie Thompson, Nevada.

Vera Ferry

HOWARD - Vera Venora Ferry, 92, lifelong resident of Howard, died Aug. 29, 1998, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Zimmerman Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Marty DeWitt will officiate. Friends may call until 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions to Howard Twilight Manor can be left at the funeral home.

Ferry was born Jan. 3, 1906, in Howard to John Thomas and Ida Belle (Baughman) Van Buskirk.

On June 21, 1920, she married Leslie C. Ferry. They made their home in Howard where they owned and operated a produce business for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and a daughter, Lorena Fear.

Survivors include a son, Harold J. Ferry, Howard; a daughter, Anita Kling, Wichita; three sisters, Hazel Lanning and Eunice Townsley, both of Howard, and Alice King, Calumet City, Ky.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Calista Richards

REDMOND, Wash. - Calista Marie Richards, 101, of Redmond, formerly of Howard, died Aug. 26, 1998, at Corwin Center Nursing Home in Redmond.

Services were held in Bellevue, Wash. Private burial services will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. Zimmerman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richards was born April 16, 1897, in Severy, to Millard and Emma Pauline (Fox) Monical.

In 1915 she married Harold C. Richards. They made their home in Howard where they owned and operated a grocery store for many years. He died in 1973.

In 1987 Richards moved to Washington to be near her daughters.

Survivors include a son, Harold Richards, Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Ruth Wallick, Bellevue, Wash., and Dottie Morss, Mercer Island, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Weldon Barnard

Services for Weldon Barnard, 77, who died Aug. 23, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.

Special vocal music was "Beyond the Sunset," performed by Gaye Mackey. The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Wanda Mackey was the organist. Judy Perrigo sang "How Great Thou Art" at the cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Max Allison, Charley Chambers, R.G. Jordan, Charles Miller, C.E. Neubecker, Dale Neubecker, Kenneth Stauffer and Carl Gene Wolfe.

Casket bearers were David Burdette, Lowell French, Wayne Kelley, Dean Keplinger, Kenny Liebau and Robert L. Stauffer.

A memorial has been established with the landscaping fund at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Hazel Underwood

Services for Hazel Fern Underwood, 84, who died Aug. 25, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 31 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.

Evelyn Upchurch was the pianist, and Linda Reed was the vocalist. Solo selections were "The Old Rugged Cross," "Standing on the Promises," "How Great Thou Art" and "I'll Fly Away."

Honorary casket bearers were Larianne Peach, Aaron, Ruth and Jared Underwood, Sara Million and Linda Reed.

Casket bearers were George W. and Orlan Underwood, Steve Reed, Edward Davis, Charles Peach Jr. and David Oakes.

Memorials have been established with Grouse Valley Manor and the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Opal Brown

EL DORADO - Opal Bunella Brown, 78, of El Dorado, died Aug. 30, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in El Dorado. Cremation has been effected.

A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army. Contributions can be made through Kirby-Morris Funeral Home.

Brown was born March 30, 1920, in Durant, Okla. She had lived in the El Dorado area for 45 years. A longtime employee of Boeing Aircraft Co., she was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Challenger Sunday school class and the Grandmothers Club, which she had served as president.

Survivors include a daughter, Della (Doyle) Moore, Winfield; one granddaughter, Heather Hadley, Prescott, Ariz.; and two great-grandchildren.

Ellamae Widler

Ellamae Widler, 94, died Aug. 30, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Enterprise Cemetery. The Rev. Jerre Nolte will officiate.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with Grace United Methodist Church.

Widler was born Sept. 18, 1903, in Alfalfa County, Okla., to Samuel and Laura Belle (Fisher) Barr. She was raised in the Abilene area and graduated from Abilene High School.

After graduating with her normal school teaching certificate, she taught in rural schools around Abilene and Hope for six years. She also attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.

On June 13, 1929, she married Frank B. Widler Sr. They moved to Winfield in 1949 and ran Widler's Food Market at 1216 E. Eighth through the early 1970s.

Her husband died Aug. 18, 1980. A son, Frank B. Widler Jr., also preceded her in death.

Widler was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Koinonia Circle and the auxiliary of Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Margaret Widler, a grandson, Michael Widler, and a granddaughter, Jan McClung, all of Winfield, and four great-granddaughters.

Dale Harris

Services for Dale Harris, 92, who died Aug. 27, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 31 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Organist was Gwen Lumbert. Randy Clifford sang "Each Step I Take" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Casket bearers were Harris' grandsons and great-grandsons: Joe and Mike Alvarez, Jessie and Tyson Long, Dale Phillips and Chris Wagoner.

A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.

Mildred Gore

MANHATTAN - Mildred Louise Gore, 80, of Manhattan, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 1, 1998, at her daughter's residence in Milford.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert Sanders will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Homecare & Hospice Inc. or St. Paul's Episcopal Church through Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Gore was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Winfield, to John and Grace (Schmidt) Clift. She married Jack Gore, and they later divorced.

A Manhattan resident for 13 years, she had been a buyer for Dillard's Department Store in Tulsa, Okla., and Fort Worth, Texas, for 25 years.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Manhattan and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Walls, Milford; a sister, Maudene Murphy, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Harold Parker

GUNNISON, Colo. - Harold Marion Parker Jr., 75, of Gunnison, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 7, 1998, in Gunnison.

Service were held Aug. 10 at the Presbyterian Church in Lake City, Colo. Inurnment was in Montrose, Colo.

Memorials have been established with Community Presbyterian Church in Lake City, the Presbytery of Western Colorado, the Alzheimer's Association and the Diabetes Foundation.

Parker was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Oklahoma City, to Harold Marion and Donia (Nash) Parker. He was educated in Oklahoma City and Kansas City, Mo., public schools.

He graduated from Park College in 1944 and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1946 and a Master of Theology degree in 1952. In 1966 he received a Doctor of Theology degree from Iliff School of Theology in Denver.

For many years he served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Parker became on ordained Presbyterian minister in 1946 and served congregations in Lawson, s Mo., Fairfax, Mo., Buechel, Ky., Knoxville, Tenn., Winfield, Arkansas City, Geuda Springs, Wichita and Lake City, Colo.

He began teaching at Southwestern College in 1961 and later taught at Friends University. At Southwestern he served as director of student religious life and college chaplain.

In 1967 he moved to Gunnison and taught history at Western State College for 20 years. He was also pastor of Community Presbyterian Church.

Parker served as secretary/treasurer of the Rocky Mountain-Great Plains region of the Society of Biblical Literature/ American Academy of Religion, as history editor of the Christian Observer and as a member of the board of directors of the Alumni of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Among Parker's awards were Teacher of the Year at Southwestern, Man of the Year of the Hinsdale County Chamber of Commerce, the James Henly Thornwell Award twice for articles on southern Presbyterian history, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

He wrote five books, co-authored two others and published scholarly and popular articles.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Parker, Gunnison; two sons, Howard Parker, Powell, Wyo., and Harold Parker, Dallas; a brother, Tom Parker, Dayton, Ohio; and two granddaughters.
