Alice Peterson
PARSONS - Alice O. Peterson, 98, of Parsons, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 28, 1998, at Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Carson-Wall Funeral Home. The Revs. Mark Young and Robert Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield.
The family will meet with friends at the funeral home an hour before the service and following it.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church of Parsons.
Peterson was born May 14, 1900, in Garden City, to John T. and Ellie Jane (Ruth) Easley. They lived in Finney and Scott counties before moving to a farm two miles east of Altamont in 1911. She graduated from Altamont High School in 1919 and lived in that area during her early adult years.
On March 17, 1946, she married Lawrence A. Peterson. He died Nov. 12, 1963.
From 1946 to 1969 she lived in Winfield and was employed at Winfield State Hospital for several years. In 1969 she returned to Parsons.
Peterson was a member of the First Christian Church and a member and former president of the Social Order of Beauceant and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyne M. Campbell, Carrollton, Texas. Another daughter, Betty (Thorn) Stenberg, preceded her in death.
Juanita Montoya
Juanita A. Montoya, 76, of 418 W. Ninth, Winfield, died Aug. 27, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.
Montoya was born March 22, 1922, in Topeka, to John and Dorothy (Tracy) Bunds. Raised and educated in Topeka, she was employed with Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita for a number of years.
On Dec. 28, 1963, she married Gregory D. Montoya in Winfield, where they resided throughout most of their marriage. Mr. Montoya died in July 1990.
A homemaker, Mrs.. Montoya was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, where she had worked for more than 15 years in the rectory.
Survivors include a son, Ronald L. Berwert, Winfield; a daughter, Vickki Warnock, Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Dale Harris
Dale Harris, 92, of 1518 E. 11th, Winfield, died Aug. 27, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Harris was born Oct. 23, 1905, on a farm near Burden, to Fred and Ola (Peter) Harris. He was raised and educated in Burden and attended barber school in Oklahoma City as a young man.
He worked as a barber in Oklahoma City for a short time before returning to Burden, where he began his farming career.
On Aug. 26, 1932, he married Ethel M. Wilson in El Dorado. They lived and worked on their farm near Burden for nearly 25 years before moving to Winfield in 1955.
He was employed with Smith-Moon Steel Co. in Winfield for 14 years, retiring in 1969.
He was a member of Burden Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Harris, Winfield; two sons, Milton Harris, New Castle, Colo., and Steven Harris, Wellington; two daughters, Yvonne Heuszel, Albuquerque, N.M., and Marilyn Calvin, Winfield; 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Marvin Earley
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Marvin H. Earley, 84, of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Newkirk, Okla., died Aug. 27, 1998, in Springfield.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Nowata, Okla., Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.
A memorial has been established with the West Kansas Avenue Church of God in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Earley was born July 17, 1914, in Bixby, Okla., to James A. and Nettie Odell Craven Earley. He was raised and educated in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas and began work as a young man in the Kansas and Oklahoma oil fields.
On Aug. 24, 1935, he married Mary Audra Smith at Nowata. They lived in Oklahoma and Kansas where he was employed in oil field drilling and production. They transferred to Fort Morgan, Colo., with Pure Oil Co. where he ended his oil field work in 1961.
After the Earleys moved to Fresno, Calif., in 1961, Mr. Earley was employed with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. for 18 years. Following his retirement in 1979, they returned to Newkirk. Mary Earley died Aug. 25, 1992.
On Dec. 6, 1992, he married Alene Smith Richards. They resided in Springfield, Ohio, throughout their marriage.
He was a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Alene Earley, Springfield, Ohio; three sons, Raymond L. Earley, Brentwood, Calif., H. Gene Earley, Livermore, Calif., and Kennith L. Earley, Newkirk; three daughters, Marjorie Ellis, Livermore, Nancy Funk, Mantica, Calif., and Alice Gonzellus, Brentwood; a sister, Mildred Carter, Goddard; two stepsons, Lowis Richards and Wesley Richards, both of Springfield; two stepdaughters, Deloris Pendergraft, Enon, Ohio, and Shirley Richards, Columbus, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Beryl Elrod
EL PASO, Texas - Beryl Berniece Elrod, 86, of El Paso, Texas, formerly of Moline, died Aug. 28, 1998, at the Retirement Center in El Paso.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Moline United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Moline Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Bowyer will officiate.
Memorials have been established with Moline United Methodist Church.
Elrod was born July 25, 1912, in Leeds, to Jackson and Mabel (Wells) Warren.
On March 2, 1935, she married Raymond Wheeler. He died in May 1961. On Oct. 27, 1980, she married Thomas Henry Elrod. He died Nov. 8, 1989.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Moline United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, John Wheeler, El Paso.
Alice Ryan
Services for Alice Ryan, 92, who died Aug. 22, 1998, were held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 26, 1998, in Wheeler Funeral Home in Burden. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Burden Chapter 128 Order of Eastern Star.
The music selection was "Precious Memories."
Honorary casket bearers were Michael Gardner, Matthew Ryan, Michael Ryan, Ryan Armstrong, Brent Cunningham, Ross Armstrong, Aaron Admire, Joey Gardner and Adam Gardner.
Casket bearers were Chuck Ryan, Roger Cunningham, Mitch Gardner, Mark Gardner, Larry Admire and Russ Armstrong.
Thelma Defore
Thelma P. Defore, 85, a resident of Winfield for more than 50 years, died Aug. 30, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Research Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Defore was born April 21, 1913, on a farm near Ensign, to Chester Haskell and Mary (Strawn) Houser. She was raised and educated in the Ensign area.
As a young woman she marred Earl B. Davis. They farmed in Oklahoma before they divorced. She later married Lyle W. Massey. They lived in Wichita for a number of years prior to their divorce.
On Feb. 28, 1944, she married Cecil C. Defore in Newkirk, Okla. They moved to Cowley County in 1945 and farmed and ranched in the Winfield and Dexter areas before moving into Winfield in 1958.
The Defores owned and operated several restaurants in Cowley County, including the Castle Rock Cafe in Winfield and the Strother Field restaurant.
Her husband died Nov. 11, 1987. She had resided at Good Samaritan Village since 1992.
Defore was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include four sons, Dan C. Defore, Winfield, Bob Massey and Jack Massey, both of Dexter, and Joe Massey, Cedar Vale; a daughter, Debbie Bauer, Wichita; four stepdaughters, Donna Storey and Cleta Porter, both of Winfield, Janie Ketchum, Udall, and Glenda Lane, Valencia, Calif.; a brother, Ira Houser, Bethany, Mo.; three sisters, Irene Asher, Weskan, Leah Belle Mead, Wichita, and Wilma Richardson, Hutchinson; 29 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Virginia Lee Davis and Joyce Steward Evans, preceded her in death.
Howard Poovey
OXFORD - Howard Wesley Poovey, 66, longtime resident of Oxford, died Aug. 27, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Oxford Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.
Poovey was born Oct. 26, 1931, in Winfield, to Clarence and Velma (Whittaker) Poovey. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1950, then served in the U.S. Army for two years.
On Dec. 19, 1954, he married Shirley Ann Brubaker. She died June 20, 1992.
Survivors include his mother, Velma Poovey, and a brother, Martin Poovey, both of Oxford; and two sisters, Ila Mae Langland, Alexandria, Va., and Marlene Nauman, Rockford, Iowa.
