Nancy Hodges

Services for Nancy Carol Hodges, 58, who died Aug. 20, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Udall. The Rev. John Branson officiated. Burial was in Ninnescah Cemetery.

Special vocal music recordings were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art," sung by Elvis Presley, and "Go Rest High on that Mountain," sung by Vince Gill.

The Beta Beta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha international sorority performed special sorority ceremonies.

Casket bearers were Robert Atkinson, Harold Doyle, Rick Godwin, J.R. Jimeson, Kenneth Keely and Richard Rutter.

Memorials have been established with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Udall United Methodist Church.

Carroll Springer

WICHITA - Carroll Lynn Springer, 52, a Boeing production worker, of Wichita, died Aug. 23, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Mortuary in Derby. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the mortuary until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Arthritis Foundation.

Springer was born June 1, 1946, in Wichita.

Survivors include a son, Gary Hankins, Elkins, Ark.; a daughter, Tammy Hankins, Wichita; five grandchildren, Esther Cherry, Winfield, Marjorie Johnson, Lincoln, Ark., Brenda Black and Glenda Everett, both of Wichita, and Katie Phillips, Prairie Grove, Ark.; and four grandchildren.

H.K. Stevens

OTTAWA - H.K. Stevens, 79, of Ottawa, retired high school teacher and basketball coach, died Aug. 24, 1998, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.

Services will be held at the First Christian Church at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Fred Schaeffer will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa from 5 p.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 Thursday.

A memorial has been established as the Ottawa High School H.K. Stevens Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of the mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.

Stevens was born March 12, 1919, in Wichita, to Ottis M. and Grace (Key) Stevens. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1937 and received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southwestern College in 1941. In 1951 he received his graduate degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley.

During World War II, he served with the 65th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, saw combat in Tunisia and Sicily and took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, serving with the First Artillery Battalion. His combat duty included the Rhineland, northern France and central Europe where he spent 406 days on combat duty.

On Nov. 9, 1946, he married Genelle Feemster in Wichita.

He taught high school and coached in Lyons. While teaching and coaching at Kingman High School in 1953, his basketball team placed second in the state tournament. Following his move to Ottawa in 1953, he taught social studies and in 1971, his Ottawa High School varsity team won the Class 3A state basketball title. He also coached the boy's cross country team to a state 3A title and in 1982, the girls' cross country team to a 5A state title. He retired from coaching in 1975 and from full-time teaching in 1983 but continued to substitute teach in Ottawa and nearby schools.

He was a member and former deacon of the First Christian Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901, both of Ottawa.

Survivors include his wife, Genelle Stevens, Ottawa; a son, Don Stevens, Martinsburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Oleta Haynie, Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, Edwin Stevens, Wichita, Lawrence Stevens, Norwalk, Calif., and O.M. Stevens Jr., Independence; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Emory Overlin

Services for Emory Lee Overlin, 50, who died Aug. 10, 1998, were held at the Winfield City Lake marina at 7 p.m. Aug. 17, 1998. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated.

Special vocal music was "Safely Home" and "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," sung by Ben Russell, and "Daddy's Hand," sung by Jessica Moore and Sissie Moore.

Honorary casket bearers were Sam Bell, Gerald Clay, Ralph Clifton, Roger Dobbins, John Helton, Jason Mannon, Kyle Overlin, Mike Schmitt, John Stout and Gordon Sutton.

Memorial have been established for Overlin's daughter, Sandra Overlin, and for the American Kidney Fund.

Carroll Springer

WICHITA - Carroll Lynn Springer, 52, a Boeing production worker, of Wichita, died Aug. 23, 1998, at her home.

Services were to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Mortuary in Derby. Burial was to be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Hazel Underwood

DEXTER - Hazel Fern Underwood, 84, of Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter, died Aug. 25, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with Grouse Valley Manor and the Alzheimer's Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Underwood was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Galena, to Leroy and Nancy (Davis) Bond. She graduated from Rose Hill High School in 1932.

On Jan. 4, 1938, she married George D. Underwood in Wichita, and they lived in the Wichita area before moving to Leon in 1954. The Underwoods moved to Brookhaven, Pa., in 1961 and lived there for seven years before moving to Everett, Wash. They returned to the Winfield area in 1974 and settled in Dexter around 1990.

Underwood was a homemaker and in the 1950s a nurse's aide at an Augusta nursing home.

She attended Dexter Baptist Church and was a member of the American Baptist Women's group of the church.

Survivors include her husband, George D. Underwood, Grouse Valley Manor; two sons, George W. Underwood, Seattle, and Orlan Underwood, Winfield; a brother, Ernest Bond, Hawaii; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Mary L. Oakes, preceded her in death.

Paul Wilson

WICHITA - Paul Donald Wilson, 83, of Wichita, retired United States Air Force major and retired Kansas Job Service manager, died Aug. 25, 1998.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary, 6555 E. Central. Burial and military honors will follow in Resthaven Cemetery Gardens of Memory.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 400 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67202.

Wilson was born Sept. 29, 1914, in the Mount Vernon community, to George Heber and Della Mae (Abel) Wilson. Raised and educated in the Winfield area, he graduated from Winfield High School in 1932 and from Southwestern College in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

On June 6, 1943, he married Louise Youle.

Wilson was drafted into military service after Pearl Harbor. After nine months as an enlisted man, he received officer's training and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He organized the 66th Airdrome Squadron which served in Europe during World War II. At the end of the war, he was discharged as a major.

Wilson sold life insurance for Connecticut Mutual for five years. Because he was in the reserves, he was called back to active duty and spent 20 years in the Air Force. He retired in 1966 and moved to Wichita in 1967. He was then employed at Boeing and by the Kansas Department of Human Resources until 1979.

He was a member of East Heights United Methodist Church, Thomas Hopkins American Legion Post 4 and the Retired Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Wilson, Wichita; two daughters, Jeannette L. Christianson, Lincoln, Neb., and Margaret E. Stull, Hutchinson; two brothers, James L. Wilson, Augusta, and Robert Wayne Wilson, Winfield; a sister, Mary Wilson, Wichita; and seven grandchildren.

Francis Cox

Francis Wayne Cox, 74, of Route 1, Winfield, died Aug. 25, 1998, at his home.

Private services will be held under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Cox was born May 2, 1924, to Herman and Aleathea (Pickering) Cox in Salem Township, on a farmstead now covered by Winfield City Lake. He attended schools in Chase and Cowley counties and graduated from Matfield Green Rural High School in 1942.

A veteran of World War II, he served in Europe. On Feb. 5, 1951, he married Corrine Alice Webster in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1960 he was discharged from the Army and joined the U.S. State Department. He worked for the Foreign Service and was assigned to embassies worldwide.

In 1970 Cox retired and moved to Winfield where he built his own home, kept a large garden and a fishing pond and actively supported student athletics.

Survivors include two sons, Bradford Cox and Stewart Cox, both of Winfield; a brother, Raymond Cox, Wichita; a sister, Marie Kabel, Polo, Mo.; and two grandchildren.

Faith Lee

HUTCHINSON - Faith W. Lee, 87, of Dallas, formerly of Winfield and Hutchinson, died Aug. 17, 1998, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Services were held Aug. 22 in Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson. Daniel A. Dyck officiated. Burial was in Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson.

Memorials have been established with the Hutchinson Public Library and the First Church of Christ Scientist in Hutchinson.

Lee was born Nov. 16, 1910, in Green River, Utah, to John Hinton and Alta Josephine (Woolsey) Briscoe. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1927 and received a bachelor's degree in 1931 and a master's degree in 1933, both from Kansas State University.

A teacher at Sherman Middle School in Hutchinson before retiring, she was a member of the American Association of University Women, Zeta Tau Alpha and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also active in the Reno County Republican Party.

In 1934 she married Donald E. Lee in Manhattan. He died Dec. 24, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Richard Lee, Dallas, and a sister, Josephine G. Boerngen, Denver.
