Marla Reynolds
WICHITA - Marla M. Reynolds, 43, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 20, 1998.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson Mortuary. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery.
Reynolds was born Dec. 14, 1954, in Winfield, to Jack and Alta Reynolds. She attended Wichita East High School.
For 11 years she was a maintenance worker at Joe's Car Wash.
Survivors include her companion, Donald Harris, Wichita; her mother, Alta Reynolds, Winfield; a brother, Dave Crawford, Wichita; three sisters, Rhonda Reynolds and Daun Reynolds, both of Wichita, and Kim Richard, Winfield; and her grandmother, Beulah Davis, Wichita.
Oliver Beard
HOWARD - Oliver Wesley Beard, 77, of Howard, cabinet maker, died Aug. 21, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at 220 N. Cedar, Howard. The Rev. Marty Dewitt will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be left with the Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Beard was born July 19, 1921, in Winfield, to Luther Lucious and Pansy Patience (Boster) Beard. He graduated from Winfield High School and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the army.
After serving his country during World War II, he married Wanda Maxine Rees on Feb. 23, 1946, in Wichita. He was employed as a cabinet maker in Wichita during most of his life. In August 1984, he moved with his family to Howard.
He was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Beard, Howard; two daughters, Linda Piatt, Howard, and Carolyn Keeton, Wichita; three brothers, George Beard and Lester Beard, both of Wichita, and Luther Beard, Newton; two sisters, Arlene King, Hutchinson, and Maxine Irton, Derby; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Jim Hogan
MOLINE - James P. "Jim" Hogan, 83, died Aug. 22, 1998, at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
A rosary service will be held tonight at 7 and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. The Rev. Edward J. Steinberger will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by Ferguson-Speese American Legion Post 388 at Mount Olivet Cemetery, south of Moline.
A memorial has been established with New Beginnings of Moline. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Hogan was born July 6, 1915, in Wichita, to James and Annabel (Welch) Hogan. He attended Elk County schools and grew to manhood in the Moline area. After graduating from Moline High School in 1933, he taught in rural Elk and Chautauqua county schools for eight years.
In July 1941, he became employed in Washington, D.C., at the Social Security Administration. In 1942 he entered the United States Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II, earning the rank of first lieutenant.
After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to his employment at the Social Security Administration. He worked at the Social Security office in Chicago for a brief time and later transferred to the Kansas City area office.
On July 26, 1947, he married Marguerite M. Eblen at Our Lady of Good Council Church in Kansas City, Mo. In 1950 they moved to a farm south of Moline, where they raised five children. Jim Hogan was a farmer and rancher in Elk County and a real estate broker in Moline for many years.
Hogan was a member of St. Mary's Church and was past commander of the American Legion Post 388 at Moline. He also served on the school board for many years.
Survivors include four sons, Jim Hogan and Ken Hogan, both of Independence, and John Hogan and Dennis Hogan, both of Moline; a daughter, Kathleen Ricci, Houston, Texas; a sister, Mary Giesy, of Hemet, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
Alice Ryan
DERBY - Alice Ryan, 92, of Derby, formerly of Burden, died Aug. 22, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wheeler Chapel in Burden. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with Burden Chapter 128 Order of Eastern Star.
Ryan was born July 6, 1906, in Burden, to Joseph B. and Maude (Hughes) Pickens. She was raised and educated in Burden.
She and Charles owned and operated Ryan's Cafe in Burden during the 1930s and 1940s. They ran Ryan's General Merchandise from 1944 to 1965. Mr. Ryan died June 1, 1987.
Mrs. Ryan attended the Methodist church and was a member of Burden Chapter 128 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Joe Ryan, Guthrie, Okla.; three daughters, Lorene Cunningham, Derby, and Leola Teel and Lucille Gardner, both of Wichita; three brothers, Herbert Pickens, Winfield, Charles Pickens, Weslaco, Texas, and William Pickens, San Bernardino, Calif.; one sister, Reva Reynolds, Wichita; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Carita Vierthaler
WICHITA - Carita L. Vierthaler, 73, of Wichita, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Shriners' hospitals.
Vierthaler was born March 21, 1925, in Winfield, to Henry and Wilma (Estes) Knoth. She was educated in the Winfield area schools.
On Nov. 8, 1952, she married Matthew A. Vierthaler in Arkansas City. He died Oct. 15, 1994.
She had been working in records/bookkeeping for Cessna Aircraft for several years.
Survivors include several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Luther Dunlap
AUGUSTA - Luther W. Dunlap, 95, retired oil field worker, of Augusta, died Aug. 21, 1998, in Augusta.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hillside Funeral Home's Augusta chapel. The Rev. Chee Sin Ho will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Douglass Senior Center.
Dunlap was born Sept. 25, 1902, in Honey Creek Township, Crawford County, Ill., to Sanford and Rebecca (Souther) Dunlap.
On May 1, 1920, he married Sylvia M. Miller in Vincennes, Ill. She died in 1987.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy F. Dunlap, Douglass, and Donald W. Dunlap, Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Glady Allenson
OXFORD - Gladys Brown Allenson, 92, of Oxford, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Children's Department of Oxford Public Library. Contributions may be made through Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.
Allenson was born Aug. 16, 1906, in a dugout near Hugoton, to William Frane and Mary Estell (Prater) Furnas. When she was an infant, the family moved to Oxford. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1924 and taught in Yale rural school district 44 for two years. She didn't teach a third year because she married Charles Robert Brown in 1926, and the school board did not wish to hire married women in those days.
In the spring of 1946, she was hired to teach first grade in Oxford. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Southwestern College in 1953 and her master of science degree from Emporia State College in 1963.
Mr. Brown died in 1957.
In May 1967, she and Frank Allenson married in Brenham, Texas. They lived there until he died in 1976 when she returned to Oxford to teach special education. She continued to teach until her health began to fail in 1987. She had lived at Riverview Manor since then.
She was a member of Oxford Christian Church, the Modern Mothers, Delta Sigma Phi and the Kansas Authors Association.
Survivors include a son, Darrel Brown, Yachates, Ore.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A son, Howard Lee Brown, preceded her in death.
Sabrina Jones
Sabrina Kay Jones, 37, of 1408 E. Second, Winfield, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the Cancer Center of Kansas at William Newton Memorial Hospital. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.
Jones was born March 27, 1961, in Lafayette, Ind., to Irvin George and JoAnn Lucielle (Young) Britton. She was raised in Indiana and graduated from Carroll High School in Flora, Ind., in 1979.
In 1983 she graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in audiology and speech sciences. In 1987 she earned a master's degree from the University of Arkansas School of Medical Sciences.
On June 23, 1984, she married David Jones in Little Rock, Ark.
She began her career in speech therapy in Arkansas where she served three years with the Conway, Ark., Human Development Center. She worked at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center from 1988 to 1991 when the Joneses returned to Indiana. When they came back to Winfield in 1993, she began working as a speech pathologist for private companies before her retirement in 1997 due to failing health.
A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she was active in the Rosary group. She was also affiliated with the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
Survivors include her husband, David Jones, Winfield; her parents, Irvin and JoAnn Britton, a brother, David Britton, and a sister, Lora Chapman, all of Flora, Ind.
Weldon Barnard
GRENOLA - Weldon Barnard, 77, of Grenola, died Aug. 23, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery
in Grenola.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with the landscaping fund for Greenlawn Cemetery. Contributions may be made through the funeral service.
Barnard was born Aug. 2, 1921, on a farm west of Grenola, to Clyde C. and Myrtle (Camp) Barnard. Raised and educated in the Grenola area, he began farming as a young man.
On Aug. 11, 1945, he married Viola Anne Wolfe in Independence. They made their first home on the family farm west of Grenola. They then moved to a farm north of Grenola where they lived and farmed and Mr. Barnard began doing electrical contract and repair work in 1955. He was also self-employed in livestock trucking for several years.
In 1962 the Barnards moved to Grenola where they have resided for the past 36 years.
A member of the Grenola United Methodist Church, he was formerly affiliated with the Oddfellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Barnard, Grenola; a son, Bill Barnard, Winfield; two daughters, Judy Shore, Grenola, and Janie Williamson, Rose Hill; a sister, Patti Schultz, Smithton, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
