Carroll Sandborn
Marion Carroll Sandborn, 83, lifelong resident of the Eaton community east of Winfield, died Aug. 8, 1998, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Military rites will be conducted in Burden Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and before service time Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.
Sandborn was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Arkansas City, to Harold Piel and Josephine Blanche (Shorter) Sandborn. He was raised and educated in the Eaton community and graduated from Burden High School in 1933. He began his longtime farming career as a youth.
A veteran of World War II, Sandborn served as an aircraft fueler with the U.S Army Air Force in India, China and the United States.
Sandborn then returned to the family farm where he lived and worked until moving to Walnut Hill Nursing Center a year ago.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and a longtime affiliate of Winfield American Legion Post 10.
Survivors include a sister, Kathryn Miller, Winfield; five nephews, and five nieces, including Nancy Horst, Winfield.
Henry Bowlby
Henry Otho Bowlby, 79, of 714 E. 13th, Winfield, died Aug. 7, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate. Military rites will be conducted in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Bowlby was born Oct. 3, 1918, on a farm near Udall, to Warren Franklin and Stella Mae (Shay) Bowlby. He was educated in Udall rural schools and farmed as a young man.
On May 3, 1941, he married Vera Carpenter in Newkirk, Okla.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the Air Force Signal Corps in Germany and the European Theatre.
Bowlby then began employment with the Santa Fe railroad. He retired as a section foreman in 1978, following 34 years of service.
The Bowlbys moved from the Floral community to Winfield in 1974. A member of the Methodist Church, he was also affiliated with American Legion Post 10.
Survivors include his wfe, Vera Bowlby, Winfield; two sons, Harvey Bowlby, Winfield, and Harry Bowlby, Idaho Falls, Idaho; two daughters, Imagean Ploof, Winfield, and Mary Taylor, Mulvane; a brother, Jack O. Bowlby, Winfield; six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Alice Adams
LEXINGTON, Neb. - Alice L. Adams, 88, of Lexington, died Aug. 7, 1998, at Neosho Memorial Regional Health Center in Chanute.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Lexington with Pastor Tom Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery
at Lexington. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Adams was born April 26, 1910, at Howard to Luther M. and Fanny L. (Fear) Anderson. She attended school in the Howard area.
On Nov. 18, 1928, she married James Homer Adams of Moline. The couple lived in Moline until moving to Nebraska in 1946.
Adams was active in the Christian Church, the Navy Mothers Club and a pinochle club.
Survivors include four sons, Bill Adams, Overton, Homer Adams, Winfield, Larry Adams, Virginia Beach, Va., and James Adams, Superior, Neb.; a daughter, Marie Dorner, Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Harold Anderson, Overland Park, two sisters, Opal May Blunk, Chanute, and Doris McDonald, Bertrand, Neb.; 26 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967 and three daughters, Donna Brandenberg, Zeela Elvira and Marcia Lynn
Ethel Morton
Ethel May (Arrington) Morton, 92, of Cumbernauld Village, died Aug. 9.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
Emery Overlin
Emery L. Overlin, 50, of 1513 Manning in Winfield, died Aug. 10 at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Miles Funeral Service will announce arrangements.
Ruth Jordan
MOORE, Okla. - Ruth Jordan, 77, longtime Burden resident, died Aug. 9, 1998, at the home of Robert and Sharon Rickard in Moore, Okla.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burden Baptist Church. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday.
Memorials have been established with Hospice of Norman, Okla., and the Burden Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.
Jordan was born May 21, 1921, in Grandin, Mo., to Abraham and Elizabeth Smelser. She was raised and educated in Grandin.
On Jan. 7, 1939, she married Luther B. Jordan in Hunter, Mo. They resided in Missouri for several years before moving to the Cambridge area in 1945. They moved to a farm north of Burden in 1949 and lived and farmed in that area until moving into Burden in 1981. Her husband died Jan. 23, 1984.
Jordan lived in Burden until moving to Moore in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Ronald L. Jordan, Randallstown, Md.; a daughter, Sharon K. Rickard, Moore, Okla.; two brothers, Leon Smelser, Flippin, Ark., and Herbert Smelser, Desoto, Mo.; a sister, Agnes Swaggert, Donaphin, Mo.; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Louise Rohrer
Services for N. Louise Rohrer, 79, who died Aug. 6, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Solo selections were "Going Home" and "Peace in the Valley."
Casket bearers were Brian, Jason, Bart and Troy Rohrer, Monty Yancy, Mike Lichtenberger and Ricky Gutierrez.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Emory Overlin
Emory L. Overlin, 50, of 1513 Manning, Winfield, died Aug. 10, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Winfield City Lake Marina. Cremation has been effected by Miles Funeral Service.
Memorials have been established to benefit Overlin's daughter, Sandra Overlin, and with the American Kidney Fund. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Overlin was born Feb. 21, 1948, in Emporia, to Leslie Edward and Elsie Catherine (Roles) Overlin. He was raised and educated in Emporia and served a tour of duty as a cook in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He began employment with the Santa Fe railroad, serving as a machine operator in the track division.
On April 17, 1976, he married Michelle Parrish in Winfield. They lived in Chanute before Overlin retired from the railroad in 1977.
The Overlins moved to Winfield in 1982, and he began work as a driver for McFarland Trucking Co. in 1986. He retired in 1989 due to failing health.
Overlin was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Michelle Overlin, Winfield; a son Christopher Overlin, Neodesha; two daughters, Amanda Overlin and Sandra Overlin, both of Winfield; a brother, Lynn Henry Overlin, Neodesha; a sister, Mary Jo Medlen, Dewey, Okla.; and a granddaughter.
Tom Purvis
BURDEN - Services for Tom E. Purvis, 65, who died July 31, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 7, 1998, at Wheeler Funeral Home in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Solo selections were "Go Rest High on that Mountain," "My Way" and "Build Me a Cabin in the Corner of Glory Land."
A memorial has been established with Hospice of Truth or Consequences, N.M.
Rae Nell Ray-Edwards
Rae Nell Ray-Edwards, 46, homemaker, died Aug. 6, 1998, at 317 N. Loomis, Winfield. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel.
Ray-Edwards was born Dec. 21, 1951, to Ray E. and Beth (Smith) Edwards in Bastrop, Texas. She was raised in the Arkansas City area and attended Arkansas City High School.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Ray, Wellington; three daughters, Desta Kay, Oklahoma City, Missy Lynn Ray, Ohio, and Teah Ray, Wellington; her father, Ray Edwards, Smithville, Texas; a sister, Rhonda Edwards, Arkansas City; and two grandchildren.
A daughter, Beth Ann Edwards, preceded her in death.
Ethel Morton
Ethel May (Arrington) Morton, 92, died Aug. 9, 1998, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. She donated her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Memorial services were held at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Louise Schuppener was the organist, and Dr. James Schuppener was the vocalist. Music included "When the Role Is Called Up Yonder," "Going Home" and "Amazing Grace."
Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and the Cumbernauld Village Hope Fund. Contributions can be sent to Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.
Morton was born Aug. 2, 1906, in Moundridge, to Ralph Carlyle and Lula Nancy (Sample) Arrington. She grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma and graduated from East High School in Wichita.
Her last employment was as register of deeds for Harper County in Anthony. She retired in 1975.
On Nov. 26, 1933, she married Howard Russell Morton at Kechi. They lived in Winfield, Wichita, Kingman and Anthony before returning to Winfield in 1981.
While in Anthony, she was active in the Wesleyan Service Guild of the Methodist Church, serving as local president and district secretary. She served as president and district secretary for the Anthony Business and Professional Women and as president for the Klyonian Club.
After moving to Winfield, she became a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Morton, Cumbernauld Village; a son, Herbert Morton, Winfield; a daughter, Winifred "Freddie" Lear, Longview, Texas; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
