Dick Atwater
BURDEN - Dick L. Atwater, 55, of rural Burden, died July 24, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial services will be private.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Atwater was born Feb. 2, 1943, in Wichita, to Max E. and Leona E. (Nutter) Atwater. He was raised and educated in Wichita and graduated from Wichita West High School in 1961.
Atwater enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and served as an electric power specialist with the Seventh Civil Engineering Squad in Thule, Greenland, then later served two tours of duty in Vietnam.
On Feb. 20, 1965, he married Judith Kay Lang in Wichita where they made their first home.
For many years, Atwater was employed as a truck driver for Graves Truck Line and ANR Freight Systems in Wichita. He had also been employed by Butler Brothers in Winfield and Coleman, Boeing and Lear Jet in Wichita.
In 1981 the Atwaters moved to rural Winfield. He had worked as a truck driver for Dolly Madison Foods for two years when he retired Oct. 31, 1996, due to failing health.
They moved to Burden in 1996.
Atwater was a longtime member of the Teamsters Union, affiliated with locals 795 and 955.
Survivors include his wife, Judith Atwater, Burden; a son, Mathis D. Atwater, Boulder, Colo.; three daughters, Kayle D. Godsey, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kelly D. Shultz and Kerry D. Atwater, both of Winfield; seven brothers, Max Atwater, Aransas Pass, Texas, Larry Atwater, El Cajon, Nev., Frankie Atwater, Chickasha, Okla., Johnny Atwater, Monterrey Park, Calif., Ronald Atwater, Carson City, Nev., Stephen Atwater, Wichita, and Russell Atwater, Peabody; three sisters, Beverly Mahathey, Newton, Linda Farha, Wichita, and Teresa Colbert, Wichita; and five grandchildren.
Maynard Hart
WICHITA - H. Maynard Hart, 85, retired Ritchie Construction concrete operator, died July 23, 1998.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita. Graveside services will be held at 2:45 p.m. in Union-Graham Cemetery
in Winfield. Byrd-Hillside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Hart was born March 6, 1913, in Winfield, to Harry L. and Hazel (Clark) Hart.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Hart, and a son, Don Hart, both of Wichita; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edith Rickard
HUTCHINSON - Edith M. Rickard, 86, of Hutchinson, died July 23, 1998, at Hutchinson Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson. The Rev. Doug Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home in Hutchinson until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Hutchinson Public Library.
Rickard was born Nov. 3, 1911, at Jester, Okla., to Miles P. and Ida (Hopper) Griffin. She graduated from Langdon High School in 1929.
On Aug. 25, 1934, she married Joseph B. Ward in Hutchinson. On Feb. 7, 1971, she married Max Esch in Hutchinson. He died in 1975. On Oct. 25, 1987, she married John K. Rickard in Hutchinson. He died Sept. 15, 1988.
A 59-year resident of Hutchinson, Rickard had been employed in the insurance industry. She retired as office manager of the former Hutchinson Investment Co. in 1970.
Rickard was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Veronica's Circle Altar Society, Hutchinson Art Association, Friends of the Library and Vignettes.
Survivors include a son, Joseph G. Ward, Oklahoma City; a daughter, Melinda A. Dierks, Grenola; a brother, Walter Griffin, Lodi, Calif.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ernest Nickelson
Services for Ernest Claude Nickelson, 70, who died July 19, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. July 24, 1998, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Thomas Mitchell officiated, and the vocal music selection was "Amazing Grace."
Burial was in Big Creek Cemetery
near Chanute.
A memorial has been established with Focus Developmental Center in Winfield.
Bryce Rising
Service for Bryce L. Rising, 85, who died July 21, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. July 24 at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ron Keith officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Martin Rude sang "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "God Will Take Care of You."
Honorary casket bearers were Ted Biby, Gale Bunner, Marvin Morgan and Raymond Wallace.
Casket bearers were Blaine Bair, Brady and Brian Dutton, Shawn Mills, John Moberly, Jason Peebler and David and Richard Rising.
Memorials have been established with Burden First Responders and Hospice Inc.
Leslie Blenden
CEDAR VALE - Leslie H. Blenden 75, of Cedar Vale, died July 26, 1998, in his home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with People's Place and the United Methodist churches in Cedar Vale and Wauneta.
Blenden was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Fall City, to Frank and Goldie (Stark) Blenden. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from 1942 to 1946.
On June 16, 1946, he married Lavina Howard in Hewins.
For 38 years Blenden was a heavy equipment operator in road construction in Tucson, Ariz. After retiring, he moved to Cedar Vale in 1987.
Blenden was a member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church, the Cedar Vale American Legion and Local 428 of the operating engineers of Tucson.
Survivors include his wife, Lavina Blenden, Cedar Vale; four daughters, Nancy Kodlick, Glendale, Ariz., Jane Schmidt, Rock, Naomi Blenden, Los Angeles, and Evelyn Sheppard, Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, Elseon Blenden, Topeka; three sisters, Pauline Appleby, Elgin, Okla., Nola Hilgardner, Topeka, and Freda Coyle, Arkansas City; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mildred Andrews
WICHITA - Mildred Juanita Andrews, 64, of Wichita, formerly of Dexter, died July 25, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane. The Rev. Terry Love will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at the mortuary until 8 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Community College Scholarship Fund.
Andrews was a supervisor for Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
She is survived by a son, Ernie Andrews Jr., Wichita; two daughters, Cynthia McCaskey, Mulvane, and Wanda K. Lutkie, Viola; her mother, Sarah Steward, and a brother, Charles Steward, both of Winfield; four sisters, Evelyn Linscott, Apache Junction, Ariz., Dorothy Rush, Oxford, Jane Brooks, Winfield, and Charlotte Hendrick, Wichita; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Charles Rose
PRATT - Charles R. Rose, 85, formerly of Ashton, died July 26, 1998, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery
in Ashton.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Rose was born Nov. 28, 1912, in Fort Worth, Texas, to George Durham and Bessie E. (Roberts) Rose. When he was four years old, his mother died in a fire, and he then lived with his aunt, Nanny Hawk. When he was seven, he moved to Burrton to live with his grandparents, Tom and Grace Roberts. He attended Burrton schools.
Rose bought a farm at Ashton in 1934 and moved there in 1935. On July 25, 1937, he married Opal Marie Goodman at Wellington. They lived on the farm until she died Sept. 15, 1994.
Rose moved to Pratt and had lived at Friendship Manor Nursing Home for the last three years.
Survivors include a son, Gilbert Kent Rose, Arkansas City; a daughter, Elna Parson, Pratt; three grandchildren, two foster grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Sean Simpson
LONGTON - Thomas Sean Simpson, 24, died July 26, 1998, at his home in Longton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Wichita Park Cemetery, Wichita. The Rev. Ted D. Davis will officiate. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Simpson was born Oct. 3, 1973, in Wichita, to Thomas Henry and Sandra Arlene (Ashenfelter) Simpson. The family moved from Longton to Howard in 1979. He attended school in Howard and Caney before returning to Longton in 1989. He also attended Wichita Technical Institute and was completing his electronics degree at the vocational-technical school in Coffeyville.
An electronics technician at Spears Manufacturing in Caney, he was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Ellsworth.
Survivors include his mother, Sandra Simpson, Longton; and two sisters, Erin Kill, Longton, and Dawn White, Phoenix.
