Katherine Henry
Katherine Henry, 87, homemaker, of 324 N. Soward, Winfield, died July 19, 1998, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with Walnut Hill Nursing Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral service or nursing center.
Henry was born June 23, 1911, in Winfield, to Benjamin and Minnie (Graham) Stiner. She was raised and educated in Winfield.
On June 1, 1932, she married Albert W. Henry in Winfield. They lived in Hutchinson for many years before moving to California in 1956. They resided in Whittier, Calif., for a number of years and later lived in Oklahoma City. She was employed as a dormitory mother at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City for 10 years.
Following their retirement, the Henrys moved to Winfield in 1979. Her husband died July 11, 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary R. Blalock, and two sisters, Leona Stiner and Opal Robinson, all of Winfield; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Jasper Jacks
CHEHALIS, Wash. - Jasper Lee Jacks, 74, of Chehalis, formerly of Winfield, died June 20, 1998, at Providence Hospital in Centralia, Wash.
No services were held at his request. His body was cremated. Newell-Hoerling Chapel, Centralia, was in charge of arrangements.
A tree will be planted in his memory in the Winfield Memorial Forest at Winfield City Lake.
Jacks was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Latham, to James Temple and Opal Ruth (Cooper) Jacks. He attended grade school in Latham, Winfield High School and St. John's College.
In March 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy. During World War II he served in the Pacific and survived the sinking of the USS Wasp CV7 in 1942.
On Nov. 3, 1945, he married Bobbie Jean Ringgold.
Jacks worked as a supervisor in inspection at the Boeing plant in Wichita until he was transferred to the Boeing plant in Renton, Wash., as vice president of sales. He retired from Boeing in 1986 and moved from Renton to Chehalis nine years ago.
Survivors include three daughters, Candace "Candy" Peacock, Maple Valley, Wash., Constance "Connie" Norris, Onalaska, Wash., and Cheryl "Cherry" Tai, Corona, Calif.; two brothers, J.T. Jacks Jr., Grand Junction, Colo., and Leonard Jacks, Winfield; two sisters, Louise White, Dodge City, and Opal Lippincott, Winfield; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Ernest Nickelson
Ernest C. Nickelson, 70, a resident of Focus Developmental Center in Winfield, died July 19, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Big Creek Cemetery
near Chanute.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with Focus Developmental Center. Contributions can be made through Focus or the funeral service.
Nickelson was born May 3, 1928, in Brewster, to Claude Dewey and Jeanette Mary (Turner) Nickelson. In 1935 he moved to Winfield State Hospital and Training Center where he made his home for over 30 years. He resided in various Kansas communities before moving to Focus Developmental Center in 1987.
Survivors include three brothers, Orlando C. Nickelson, Newport, Wash., Darrell L. Nickelson, Tulsa, Okla., and Edgar Gericke McPherson; and a sister, Wanda Achilles, McPherson.
Bryce Rising
BURDEN - Bryce L. Rising, 85, longtime Burden area farmer and stockman, died July 21, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until service time Friday.
Memorials have been established with the Burden First Responders and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral service.
Rising was born June 26, 1913, in the Tisdale community east of Winfield, to Lewis Augustus and Addie (DeCamp) Rising. Raised in the New Salem community, he was educated at the Old Salem school and began farming as a youth.
On June 20, 1936, he married Helen Sickles at Newton. They made their first home on a farm southeast of Burden. In 1943 they moved to a farm west of Burden where they lived and worked for over 50 years.
Rising was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita, retiring in 1966 following 12 years of service as a router operator and lead man.
He had resided at Good Samaritan Village for three months.
Rising was a member of the Cowley County Landowners Association and Kansas Cattlemen's Association.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Rising, Winfield; four sons, Richard "Gene" Rising, Winfield, Norman Rising and Lowell Rising, both of Wichita, and Derryl Rising, Burden; two daughters, Joan Bair, Winfield, and Dianne Stanley, Rowlett, Texas; a brother, LeRoy Rising, Perryton, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Howard Hunt
BELLE PLAINE - Howard N. Hunt, 82, retired farmer and Boeing employee, of Belle Plaine, died July 21, 1998, at Sumner County Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Revs. Andy Torres and Kendal Utt will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church and Belle Plaine High School Alumni Association.
Hatfield-Smith Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Hunt was born Dec. 29, 1915, in rural Wellington to Arthur G. and Ida M. (Schwyhart) Hunt. On Aug. 31, 1938, he married Dorothy J. Cooper in Belle Plaine.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hunt, Belle Plaine; a daughter, Janelle Pritchard, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Marjorie Utt, Belle Plaine; and four grandchildren.
Christopher Sprague
Services for Christopher C. Sprague, 15, who died July 18, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. July 22 in the Winfield High School auditorium. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
His father, Charles W. Sprague, presented special family memories.
The Rev. Patricia Bennett sang "The Lord's Prayer" and "The Spirit Song," accompanied by Judy Johnson.
Honorary casket bearers were Lindsay, Rachel and Evan Sprague and Amy, Angela and Christopher Bazil.
Casket bearers were Tyson Biddle, Levi Donals, Chris Galliart, Justin Hathaway, John Kaufman, David Madrigal, Corey Nation and Jordan Sisson.
The Christopher Sprague Memorial Fund has been established for the Winfield High School Athletic Department.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Vocal music selections were "In the Garden" and "Because He Lives."
Casket bearers were Jack Bartlett, Randy Clifford, Glen Hughes, Dennis Russell, Roger Salmans and Ken Stiner.

Gerald Brewer
FARMINGTON, N.M. - Gerald A. Brewer, 78, of Farmington, died July 22, 1998, in Farmington.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Geuda Springs Cemetery. Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home of Farmington is in charge of arrangements.
Honorary casket bearers will be John Wayne Brewer, Don Bowker, Wayne Lacey, Bill Learned and John and Jeff Dziedzic.
Casket bearers will be Bill Ray Lacey, Roy Carl Schimmel, Jerry Wayne, Terril Dean Learned, James Stewart Jr., Dan and Gary Bowker and Delbert Peters.

Brewer was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Cochise County, Ariz., to Royal Clinton and Etha May (Bright) Brewer. He married Beulah E. Peters, and they lived in Farmington for many years.
He had been a lab technician for an oil refinery for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Brewer, and a son, Richard Keith Brewer, both of Farmington; a daughter, Virginia Lynn Whitson, Odessa, Texas; four sisters, Maxine Amanda Campbell, Alaska, Minnie Marion Lacey and Darlene Joan Schimmel, both of Geuda Springs, and Duana Learned, Midwest City, Okla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mary Belle Turney
BELLE PLAINE - Mary Belle Turney, 86, lifelong resident of the Riverdale and Belle Plaine area, died July 23, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Church of Christ in Wellington. Neal Michael and Richard Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Council Hill Cemetery
in Peck.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home, Wellington, from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the Belle Plaine Church of Christ Building Fund.
Turney was born March 4, 1912, in rural Riverdale, to Andrew H. and Perry Lee (DeMarcus) Swan.
On Jan. 30, 1930, she married Forest Loyial Turney in Belle Plaine. Her husband and an infant son, Russel, preceded her in death.
A homemaker and farmer, she was a member of the Belle Plaine Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Gene Turney, Udall; a daughter, Barbara Sears, Belle Plaine; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
