Mary Oakes

Services for Mary Louise Oakes, 59, who died July 5, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Private burial will be held in Rose Valley Cemetery, southeast of Winfield.

Oakes' daughter, Linda Reed, presented "The Old Rugged Cross." Her son, David Oakes, presented a tribute in verse.

A memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley.

Elwood Reber

Elwood H. Reber, 85, of 10 Easy Street, Winfield, died July 11, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Milan Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions can be made at the nursing home or funeral home.

Reber was born June 6, 1913, at Harper, to David and Lula M. (Dillon) Reber. He was raised in the Harper area and graduated from Harper High School in 1931.

On Nov. 17, 1935, Reber married Alice Jane Gum in Harper, where they made their first home. They lived and worked on farms in the Anthony and Harper areas before moving to a farm southwest of Oxford in 1956. From 1932 to 1945, he also served as supervisor for the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Farm Program.

His wife died March 6, 1995. Reber moved to Winfield in September 1996 following retirement.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Winfield.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Elnor G. Mohr, and a nephew, Dean M. Mohr III, both of Long Beach, Calif.

Anna Peterson

THAYER - Anna C. Peterson, 92, librarian and retired teacher, of Thayer, died July 10, 1998, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Thayer United Methodist Church. The Revs. Leonard Clark and Timothy McCrary will officiate. Burial will be in Hepler Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in Gibson-Kock-Friskel Chapel, Chanute. The Order of Eastern Star will conduct a service at 7:30.

Memorials have been established with the Thayer United Methodist Church and Thayer City Library Fund.

Peterson was born Sept. 20, 1905, near Hepler, to Fred G. and Matilda K. (Frerking) Schulte. She grew up in Hepler and moved from Hepler to Walnut in 1947. Since 1949 she had lived in Thayer.

She graduated from Walnut High School in 1923 and earned her degree in education from Pittsburg State University.

On Nov. 1, 1935, she married Earl Peterson in Lamar, Mo. He died June 17, 1982.

Peterson was a teacher for 45 years, including 14 years in one-room schools in Crawford County. After receiving her degree, she taught in high schools in Hepler, Walnut and Thayer. She began the home economics department at both Hepler and Thayer high schools. From 1975 until her death, she was librarian at Thayer City Library.

Peterson was a member of the Thayer United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. She was also a member of the Walnut Order of Eastern Star, the White Shrine Club and the Order of the Amaranth.

She was a member of various education groups and was inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame in 1997.

Survivors include 20 nieces and nephews, including Dean Kennedy of Winfield.

Inez Hittle

Services for Inez F. Hittle, 98, who died July 7, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. July 10 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Revs. Connie Wooldridge and Phyllis Provost officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Organist was Rose Marie Watt, and vocalist was Richard Clower. Solo selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Memories."

Honorary casket bearers were Jack Finley, Francis Groene, Robert Ireton, Verne Woner, Gilbert Scott and Ellis Lovelady.

Casket bearers were Robert D. Ireton, Rex Finley, Jim Watt, Casey Woner, Karl Magnusson, Kerry Hittle, Larry Hittle and Scott Thomas.

Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and area libraries.

Donald Hatfield

Donald L. Hatfield, 76, of Route 4, Winfield, died July 12, 1998, at his home.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

George Gammon

ARKANSAS CITY - George W. Gammon, 80, of Arkansas City, died July 12, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Emory N. Day and Guy E. Rendoff will officiate. Burial will follow in Parker Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Research Center and American Diabetes Research Center. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Gammon was born June 17, 1918, at Maple City to Santford M. and Bessie (Mitchler) Gammon. He attended Spring Creek School and lived in the Maple City and Otto communities until moving to Arkansas City in 1983. At age 10, he borrowed $50 from his father to buy his first livestock, a horse named Old Buck. At 14, he purchased the first and only family automobile, a Model A.

On June 8, 1940, he married Margaret Carol Johnson in Winfield.

Gammon was a farmer and cattleman all of his adult life. He also worked at the Polar Bear Flour Mill for two years.

He was a charter member of the Maple City Community Church; a former member of Maple City Masonic Lodge and national and Cowley County cattlemen's associations; and a member of the Arkansas City Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Carol Gammon, Arkansas City; a son, Robert "Bob" Gammon, Dodge City; three daughters, Sandy Rush and Carlla Pike, both of Arkansas City, and Sharron Rexroat, Argyle, Texas; a brother, Albert Gammon, Caney; a sister, Mae Shudel, address not given; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a foreign exchange son, Pecos Inchaustegui.

Donald Hatfield

Donald L. Hatfield, 76, of Route 4, Winfield, died July 12, 1998, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Hatfield was born April 8, 1922, in Belle Plaine to Harry L. and Dorothy J. (Kersey) Hatfield. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Hatfield then attended the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and graduated in 1951.

On Oct. 9, 1946, he married Phyllis Jean Poovey in Wichita.

Hatfield worked at various pharmacies before working at and eventually owning Bird's Rexall Pharmacy in Winfield. He owned and operated the pharmacy from 1956 to 1973. He then was a pharmacist at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital from 1973 until his retirement in 1988.

Hatfield was active in the First United Methodist Church, Winfield Masonic Lodge, Winfield American Legion Post 10, National Rifle Association, Kansas Pharmaceutical Association, Kansas Bowhunters, Red Valley Gun Club and American Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hatfield, and a son, David Hatfield, both of Winfield; a daughter, Jane Lee Hatfield, Derby; a brother, Jess Hatfield, Kent, Wash.; and a granddaughter.

Ruby Gentzler

LANSING - Ruby M. Gentzler, 88, of Lansing, formerly of Winfield, died July 13, 1998, at her daughter's home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home in Leavenworth. The Rev. Tim Doty will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Memorial contributions can be made to Kansas City Hospice.

Gentzler was born Jan. 15, 1910, in Cimarron to Charles Theodore and Myrtle Weece. She graduated from Cimarron High School in 1929.

On April 3, 1929, she married Marvin Gentzler in Dodge City. He died in January 1989.

Gentzler worked many years as a bookkeeper for the Cowley County treasurer's office in Winfield. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield as well as a member of the Presbyterian Women's Guild.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheri Gentzler, Leavenworth, and Donita Hawkins, Athens, Ga.; a brother, Clyde Weece, Cimarron; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Russell Nestle

ALMA, Mich. - Russell Nestle, 83, of Alma, Mich., died July 13, 1998, at Schnepp Health Care Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home in Alma. The Rev. Bill Stiles will officiate. Burial will be in Pritchard Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Alma.

Nestle was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Gratiot County's Arcada Township, Mich., to Alfred and Hazel (Herrick) Nestle.

On Aug. 17, 1943, he married Neva Needham in Breckenridge, Mich. She preceded him in death.

Nestle purchased farm land in 1938 and farmed until his retirement in 1979. After his retirement, he continued to help his son farm.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alma.

Survivors include a son, Al Nestle, Alma; three daughters, Betty Taber and Sharon Webster, both of Lake City, Mich., and Jennifer Nestle, Alma, formerly of Winfield; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Ronee Nelson

WICHITA - Ronee Resseguie Nelson, 44, jazzercise instructor of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died July 8, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center.

Services were held July 11 at the First Unitarian Church of Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie Nelson, two daughters, Anna Nelson and Veronika Nelson, and her mother, Loree Willey, all of Wichita; her father, Lee Resseguie, Denver; two brothers, Kevin Knickerbocker, Redwood City, Calif., and Tracy Resseguie, Lawrence; and a sister, Niki Oxford, Winfield.
