Jess Johnson
WELLINGTON - Jess Kenneth Johnson Jr., 59, retired truck driver, of Wellington, died June 30, 1998, at his home.
Cremation has been effected. Honorary casket bearer was Gaila Roberts. Frank Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial dinner was held in his honor on July 3 in Oxford.
Johnson was born March 31, 1939, in Okmogie, Okla., to Jess K. Johnson Sr. and Anna Mae Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include four sons, Jay Kagle, Independence, Ted Walsh, Kiowa, Robert Johnson, Independence, and Ivan Johnson, Wellington; three daughters, Anna Mae Bradley, Oklahoma, Tina Foster, Coffeyville, and Jessica Dockery, Wellington; two brothers, Art Johnson, Altus, and Daniel Johnson, Oxford; two sisters, Sally Lawson and Jeannie Leffew, both of Winfield; and four grandchildren.
Esther Morgan
HOWARD - Esther M. Morgan, 97, homemaker, died July 6, 1998, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Robin Haines will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Morgan was born May 1, 1901, in Altamont, Ill., to Alfred Franklin and Lillian (Saunders) Wucherpfenig. She attended school in Illinois until moving with her family to Parsons during her early teen years.
On Aug. 23, 1925, she married Wilbert Walter Morgan at Topeka, and they farmed northeast of Howard. Her husband died Dec. 1, 1989.
Morgan was a longtime member of the Antioch Methodist Church. After that church closed, she transferred her membership to the Howard United Methodist Church. She was active in the Ladies Aid Society for many years.
Survivors include her three sons, Robert Morgan and Francis Morgan, both of Howard, and Donald Morgan, Arma; two grandchildren and one stepgrandchild.
Lee Reeves
Services for Leland "Lee" Reeves, 59, who died July 3, 1998, were held at 2:30 p.m. July 7 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.
Kim Tatum sang "In the Garden," and Jillian Tatum sang "My Heart Will Go On."
Honorary casket bearers were Leonard and Ralph Reeves, Clark Baumann, Will Tatum and Michael Pappan.
Casket bearers were Jason Futrell, Kelly and Kevin Pappan, Robert Lee Tatum and Gilbert and Lawrence Reeves.
Memorials have been established with Palmetto Hospice and Masonic Lodge 234, both of Summerville, S.C.
Casper Groene
A Mass of Christian Burial for Casper Groene, 91, who died July 3, 1998, was celebrated at 10 a.m. July 7 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Nolan officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Dorothy Groene was the organist, Bill Chamberland was the song leader and Janet Wartel was the vocalist.
Casket bearers were David Carl Smith, David Ray, Jay Groene, Darrell Wasinger, Matt Groene and Rodney Smith.
In addition to survivors listed earlier, he is survived by a niece, Theresa Waite, Winfield.
A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.
Inez Hittle
Inez F. (Weakly) Hittle, 98, of Route 1, Winfield, died July 7, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel with burial in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and area libraries.
Hittle was born Sept. 2, 1899, at Akron to Henry and Laura (Hanna) Weakly. She attended the Akron school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1917.
She taught at the Akron, Rock, Richland and Douglass schools. During the summers she attended Southwestern College and graduated in 1939. She was named to Southwestern's Order of the Mound.
On Aug. 4, 1940, she married Kerry F. Hittle at Akron, and they farmed at Akron until his death Sept. 3, 1972.
Hittle was a 4-H leader for many years, helping with foods projects, coaching basketball teams, directing plays and serving as a community leader. She was also active in the Rocket Extension Homemakers Unit and served on the Cowley County Extension Board.
A longtime member of the Cowley County Fair Auxiliary, she served as superintendent of the antiques and art departments and as president of the auxiliary.
Hittle was a past member of the Winfield Saddle Club and William Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and had served as Republican township committeewoman. She was a member of Chapter BN of P.E.O. at Douglass for more than 60 years.
A member of Walnut Valley Presbyterian Church until its closure, she served as elder, church treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She then attended Grandview United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school there for many years.
She was a Winfield Centennial Belle candidate in 1973.
Survivors include a son, Larry G. Hittle, Winfield, and three grandchildren.
A niece and nephew, Lorraine Williams Elliott and Everett Williams, were raised by Hittle and preceded her in death.
Otto Rush
DOUGLASS - Otto Rush, 76, retired Boeing supervisor, of Douglass, died July 6, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Neal Alford and Henry Cox will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the First Baptist Church of Douglass.
Rush was born Jan. 31, 1922, in Melbourne, Ark., to the Rev. J. Mat and Della (Finley) Rush. On Dec. 12, 1945, he married Mary Cockrill in Melbourne.
Rush served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
The Rushes moved to Kansas from Arkansas in 1951.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Rush, and a son, Terry Rush, both of Douglass; a daughter, Diana McVey, Wichita; two brothers, Hayden Rush, Waldron, Ark., and John Rush, Wichita; a sister, Imodean Hadlow, Augusta; a half-brother, Coy Rush, Melbourne, Ark.; and five grandchildren.
Nelda Irvin
PONCA CITY, Okla. - Nelda R. Irvin, 59, of Ponca City, died July 7, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid, Okla.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Riverview Cemetery
at Arkansas City.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City, until 8 p.m. Thursday and until 1 p.m. Friday.
A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Irvin was born Aug. 23, 1938, at Ames, Okla., to Ben and Ethel (Cronister) Morgaridge. She attended schools in Enid.
On May 21, 1956, she married Robert Irvin in Enid, and they lived in Enid where she worked in several nursing homes. They moved to Arkansas City in 1977.
Irvin had been employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and attended Cowley County Community College before the Irvins moved to Ponca City in 1993.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Irvin, Ponca City; two sons, William Irvin, Geuda Springs, and Terry Irvin, Oklahoma City; three daughters, Wendy Hubbard and Rhonda Irvin, both of Ponca City, and Tanya McKnight, Arkansas City; her father, Ben Morgaridge, two brothers, Gary and Harry Morgaridge, and a sister, Linda Quarrels, all of Enid; and 11 grandchildren.
Lee Reeves

Roger Richardson
OXFORD - Roger Richardson, 52, died at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. Private family burial will be held later at Highland Cemetery
in Winfield.
Richardson was born Feb. 24, 1946, in Winfield, to Carl Andrew and Bealah (Woolridge) Richardson The family lived on a farm in the New Salem-Burden area until moving to a farm north of Winfield in 1949. Roger Richardson graduated from Winfield High School in 1964.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Australia.
For nearly 17 years he lived in the Lake of the Pines area of Jefferson, Texas. He worked in Longview, Texas, at the Schlitz Brewing Co. For the last few years, he lived in Oxford.
Survivors include four brothers, Elmer Dean Richardson, Tucson, Ariz., Elden Richardson, Shell Knob, Mo., Don Richardson, Ponca City, Okla., and Keith Richardson, White Oak, Texas.
Vera Durbin
ARKANSAS CITY - Vera Marie Durbin, 73, homemaker, of Arkansas City, formerly of Moline, died July 10, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Moline Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Moline United Methodist Church.
Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard has charge of arrangements.
Durbin was born March 1, 1925, in Moline, to Charles Edward and Ida Ardella (Combs) Mead. She attended school and grew to womanhood in the Moline community. After graduating from Moline High School, she was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita.
In 1945, she married Frank Edward Durbin in Moline and to this union were born three children. Mr. Durbin died in 1990.
In 1991 Mrs. Durbin moved to Winfield and in March 1997, to Arkansas City.
She was a long time member of the Moline United Methodist Church and also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Ferguson-Speese American Legion Post 388 and the Music and Literary Club of Moline.
Survivors include a son, Randal Durbin, Wellington; two daughters, Rebecca Dawson, Winfield, and Kimy Christie, Arkansas City; two sisters, Leta Shuman, Boise, Idaho, and Juanita Leonard, Leewood; and four grandchildren.
