Allene Ernst
Services for Allene Gray Ernst, 89, who died May 23, 1998, were held at 10 a.m. May 27 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jerre Nolte and Ticia Bennett officiated. Burial was at 2:30 p.m. in Lyons Community Cemetery.
Louise Schuppener was the organist, Dr. James Schuppener was the soloist and Laura Schuppener was the violinist. Music included "Hymn of Promise," "Eagles Wings," "Amazing Grace," "Rock of Ages" and "Joyful, Joyful."
Jean Wilcox, Zoe Ann Gray and Dennis Gray took part in the family sharing.
Casket bearers were Roy and Dan Wilcox, Rick and Dave Truesdell, Jim Fuller and Dennis Gray.
Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Lyons United Methodist Church.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Winifred Edgington
MOLINE - N. Winifred Edgington, 95, a lifetime resident of Moline, died May 27, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Moline United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Edgington was born Jan. 19, 1903, near Moline to Fred Root and Jennie Edna (Lawyer) Eckert. She attended Star rural school and graduated from Moline High School in 1922.
She married Roy M. Edgington on Aug. 19, 1923, in Longton.
Edgington was a longtime member of the Moline United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Edgington, Moline; a son, Jim Edgington, Wichita; her daughters, Irene Scheuerman, Winfield, and Phyllis Pollard, Lewisville, Texas; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Robert Berry
Robert K. Berry, 79, a longtime Winfield resident, died May 30, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, south of Winfield.
Visiting hours will be 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in his name for American Legion Post 10 and Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Berry was born May 17, 1919, in Winfield as one of twin sons of Ray M. and Leora (Waite) Berry. Raised and educated in Winfield, he was a 1938 graduate of Winfield High School. He competed as a Golden Gloves boxer as a young man.
A veteran of World War II, Berry joined the U.S. Navy in 1939 and served aboard battleships and troop carriers in the South Pacific and North Atlantic. During his six years of service, he was involved in 17 military engagements. He also served as an escort to movie actor Errol Flynn during the actor's visit to seamen aboard the U.S.S. Maryland.
Berry married Edna Pauline Roark on Aug. 20, 1944, in Hackney, and the couple resided in Torrance, Calif., for several years. Following his discharge in 1945, he worked in the naval shipyards in California. They moved to a farm near Udall in 1947.
In 1951, Berry began employment with the Winfield Police Department, and they moved to Winfield in 1953. During Berry's 19 years of service as a police officer, a highlight was escorting Eleanor Roosevelt during her 1962 visit to Winfield. He later served 12 years as a security police officer at the Winfield City Lake. He retired from the city in 1983.
Berry was a longtime member of American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, both of Winfield.
His wife died Nov. 13, 1997.
Survivors include his sons, James Robert Berry and Steven Karl Berry, both of Winfield, and Michael Ray Berry, Derby; his daughters, Shirley Ann Farber, Rose Hill, and Linda Pauline Zimmerman, Winfield; his sisters, Leona Snyder, Burden, and Helen Baker and Jane Snell, both of Winfield; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Thelma Asper
Thelma M. Asper, 70, of 1414 E. 11th, Winfield, died May 31, 1998, at her home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. A private burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc., and contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Asper was born Sept. 26, 1927, at Junction City, to Glenn and Pearl (Graybeal) Kerr. She was raised in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1945. She then worked as a dental assistant in Wellington.
On Feb. 5, 1949, she married L.C. "Jr." Asper in Winfield, and the couple lived in McPherson for several years before moving to Winfield.
She was self-employed as a custom drapery maker for 25 years before retiring in 1990.
Asper was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America.
Asper is survived by her husband, L.C. Asper, Winfield; her sons, Stephan C. Asper, Massillon, Ohio, and Randal L. Asper, Winfield; her brother, Chester Kerr, Seattle; her sister, Faye J. Turner, Wichita; and two grandchildren.
William White
CEDAR VALE - William James White, 86, former resident of Cedar Vale, died May 29, 1998, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Cedar Vale First Baptist Church with Stanley Upchurch officiating. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery
near Cedar Vale under the direction of Wheeler Funeral Home.
White was born Nov. 11, 1911, to John and Charlotte (Allen) White. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. He then taught in Chautauqua County schools.
On Dec. 24, 1933, he married Cleta L. Ward in Wauneta. They farmed for a short time. At the beginning of World War II he began working for Beech Aircraft, and they moved to Wichita.
After the war, they returned to Cedar Vale, and White operated a garage with his brother-in-law, Floyd Goode.
In 1950 White resumed working for Beech Aircraft and worked there for 25 years before retiring. They lived in Herington and Wichita.
The Whites retired and returned to Cedar Vale in 1978. His wife died March 28, 1983.
On July 9, 1983, he married Treva Williamson Pitts of Oklahoma City. They lived in Oklahoma City until her death on Feb. 12, 1990.
He moved to Windsor Place in Coffeyville in 1995.
White was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Karl White, Sorrento, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Lorene White, Philadelphia; two stepsons, Wayne and Donald Pitts, Oklahoma City; a sister, Fern Monholland, and two brothers, Frank and John White, all of Cedar Vale; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Alice Keller
ARKANSAS CITY - Alice E. Keller, 91, of Arkansas City, died May 30, 1998, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Riverview Cemetery
with the Rev. Guy E. Rendoff officiating. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Keller was born July 6, 1906, at Guthrie, Okla., to Martin and Dora (Duncan) Thomas. She graduated from Guthrie High School in 1925.
On May 22, 1925, she married Clinton V. Keller in Guthrie. The family lived several places before settling in Arkansas City in 1933.
During World War II, Keller worked as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. She then worked as a bookkeeper and later a teller for Union State Bank until retiring in 1985.
Keller was a member of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church.
She had resided at Medicalodge East since 1993.
Survivors include a son, Elwood D. Keller, Metairie, La.; a sister, Hazel Featheringill, Bartlesville, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Keller, Winfield; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband and a son, Clinton Keller Jr., preceded her in death.
Charles Douglas
WICHITA - Charles H. Douglas, 67, retired grocery store produce manager, died May 31, 1998.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Kechi Cemetery. Broadway Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Betty Douglas, and a son, Rick Douglas, both of Wichita; five daughters, Tammy McPherson, Debbie Adams and Kim Douglas, all of Wichita, Charlotte Siegel, Glendale, Ariz., and Cheryl Mulheran, San Antonio; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Velma Warren
INDEPENDENCE - Velma Lorene Warren, 79, a longtime resident of Longton, died June 2, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Longton United Methodist Church. Eastern Star services will be conducted by Ladonia Chapter 243 of Elk Falls. The Rev. Gerald Manley will officiate, and burial will be in Longton Cemetery.
Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
Warren was born April 29, 1919, at Saylor, Okla., to Charles William and Rebecca Melvina (Hankins) Witt. She graduated from high school at Nelagoney, Okla.
On Sept. 26, 1937, she married A.E. "Mog" Warren at Pawhuska, Okla. They lived in Pershing, Okla., before moving to Longton in 1949. Her husband died Jan. 7, 1990.
Warren was a member of the Elk County 4-H, Round-up Club and Elk County Cowbelles. She also served on the Longton Fair Board and volunteered at the Longton Library. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 40 years and was currently a member of Ladonia Chapter.
Survivors include her sons, Jim Warren, Springfield, Mo., and Lynn Warren, Garden City; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Frances Teter
TULSA, OKLA. - Frances Teter, 91, formerly of Arkansas City, died June 1, 1998, at Hillcrest Extended Care Services in Tulsa.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Pastor Joe Warren and Brad Penner will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
at Arkansas City.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
A memorial has been established with the First American Baptist Church, and contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Teter was born Nov. 18, 1906, in Geuda Springs to William Ernest and Pinkie Blanche (Casady) Holman. She was educated in Geuda Springs and Winfield.
On Feb. 20, 1924, she married Donald H. Teter in Winfield. The couple moved to Arkansas City in 1950 and owned and operated Teter Electric. Her husband died in 1987.
Teter was a member of the Democratic Party and helped during her husband's eight years as a state representative. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Melodears.
She moved to Sand Springs, Okla., in 1995.
Teter is survived by two sons, Phillip Teter, Winfield, and Leonard Teter, Tulsa; four daughters, Velma Johnston and Ilene Warren, both of Sand Springs, Edith Field, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and DeLores Penner, Gilbert, Ariz.; two sisters, Relina Humphrey, Salsbury, S.C., and Ruth Workman, Winfield; 15 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
