Edward Trautwein
Edward Radcliffe Trautwein, 60, of 2307 W. Ninth, Winfield, died April 26, 1998, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery. The casket will remain closed. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Trautwein was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Winfield, to Gerald Benton and Amy Irene (Radcliffe) Trautwein. Raised and educated in Winfield, he graduated from Winfield High School in 1955.
For many years, he resided in the Wichita area where he worked for Boeing Aircraft and Beech Aircraft. He later returned to Winfield and worked for Cessna Aircraft at Strother Field.
Trautwein owned and operated Precision Gun Service, a firearm sales and ammunition reloading business, for several years prior to his retirement in the early 1990s.
Survivors include a sister, Caroline Helgevold, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and two nephews.
Gladys Ramsey
Services for Gladys Elizabeth Ramsey, 93, who died May 1, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. May 5 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
June Vasey was the organist, and Kathy Waite was the soloist. Music selections included "The Lord's Prayer," "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."
Casket bearers were Roland and Roger Schmidt, Darrell and Clyde Webber, Martin Ray, Carroll Curfman and Richard Gibson.
A memorial has been established with First Presbyterian Church.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Watson
OXFORD - Mary Kate Watson, 84, of Oxford, former waitress and Boeing Aircraft inspector, died May 5, 1998, in Oxford.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Elmwood Cemetery. The Rev. Vern Bowers will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor Nursing Home, 200 S. Ohio, Oxford, KS 67119.
Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.
Watson was born June 30, 1913, in Mansfield, Texas, to Joseph A. and Tonnie Katherine (Spearman) Lane. On Dec. 20, 1930, she married Edward Bert Watson in El Dorado.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Lynn Rohr, Winfield, and a niece, Kathryn Todd, Andover.
John Jarvis
Services for John Edmund Jarvis, 89, who died May 3, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. May 6 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Kathy Waite was the vocalist, and June Vasey was the organist. Music selections included "Navy Hymn" and "A Mighty Fortress."
Honorary casket bearers were John Reynolds, Stanley Graham, Vernon Drake, Kenton Collinson, B.A. Nickel, L.F. Jarvis, Dick Shaw, Lloyd Craig, J.J. Banks, David Stalnaker, Irl Fife, Jim Barnthouse and Norman Albright.

Violet Hebb
HOWARD - Violet Elizabeth Hebb, 87, longtime resident of Howard, died May 1, 1998, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Marty Dewitt will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Hebb was born March 9, 1911, southeast of Severy, to Wiley Michael and Gertie (Richardson) Friend. She attended Lower Paw Paw rural school and grew up in the Severy and Howard communities.
On Feb. 17, 1932, she married Martin Lewis Hebb in Independence. He died in December 1951.
A homemaker, she had lived in Longton and Sedan but resided in Howard most of her life. She was employed for several years at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline and later at the Howard Senior Center.
Hebb was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, James Hebb, Gresham, Ore.; three daughters, Alice Ramsey, College Station, Texas, Lucille Knight, Hamilton, and Shirley McGill, Forks, Wash.; a brother, Vern Friend, and two sisters, Ethel Criger and Della Cox, all of Howard; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pansy Peden
GODDARD - Pansy L. Peden, 79, of Goddard, died May 3, 1998, in Wichita.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m. May 7 in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery
in Garden Plain. Don Mace officiated. Wulf-Ast Mortuary of Garden Plain was in charge of arrangements.
Peden was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Winfield, to W.C. and Ella (Ruggles) Ogilbee.
She had been employed as a Southwestern Bell telephone operator.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Bechtel, Osawatomie; a brother, C.C. Ogilbee, Wichita; a sister, Imcice Thornton, Kinsley; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Arceola Smith
Services for Arceola Marjorie Smith, 86, who died April 30, 1998, were held at 10:30 a.m. May 6 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Ernest McClure and Tyrone Gordon officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Organist was Stephen Dailey. Prentice Henry sang "Lead Me." The Rev. William Harper sang "All of My Life," and the Rev. Gordon sang "Because He Lives."
Flower bearers were members of Second Baptist Church and Manilla Chapter 22, Order of Eastern Star.
Honorary casket bearers were Ron Fitten and Bobby Slade.

William Helmick
FRESNO, Calif. - William Dean Helmick, 78, of Fresno, formerly of Cedar Vale and Sedan, died March 7, 1998, in Fresno.
Entombment was conducted March 11 in Fresno Memorial Gardens Cemetery. On April 4, a Dixieland celebration of Helmick's life was held at Yost & Webb Funeral Home. Those officiating were the Revs. J.D. Perry and Bill Shamp and the Blue Street Jazz Band.

Helmick was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Cedar Vale, to William Henry and Tabitha Jane (Duke) Helmick. He grew up in Cedar Vale and Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1937.
He attended Tulsa University and Independence Junior College and graduated from Southwestern College. He received his master's degree in education from Fresno State.
On Aug. 25, 1952, he married Ida Vee (Doolittle) Morgan.
Helmick played football and boxed in college and played professional football for the Detroit Lions for two years. Most of his 32 years of teaching were in Fresno.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and an active member in his church.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Vee Helmick, Fresno; his sons Walter Morgan, Los Osos, Calif., and Forrest Dean Helmick, Fresno; his daughter, Margo Kipps, Santa Cruz, Calif.; his brother, Carl Noble Helmick Sr., Littlerock, Calif.; five grandchildren; a nephew, Bill J. Call, Cedar Vale, and two nieces, Betty J. Klusmeyer, Ponca City, Okla., and Jo Call, Arkansas City.
Armand Thompson
Armand W. Thompson, 92, of Winfield, former longtime Grenola resident, died May 6, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery
in Grenola.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.
Thompson was born July 21, 1905, in Grenola, to Isaac Newton and Alice Mae (Hillier) Thompson. He was raised in Grenola and graduated from Grenola High School in 1924. He taught in Grenola rural schools for several years.
On April 29, 1925, he married Emma Lee Thompson, and they made their home in Grenola for over 20 years. Thompson worked in Robertson Drug Store for three years, and they owned and operated Grenola Drug Store for three years. They also owned and operated Thompsons' Grocery Store in Grenola for almost 20 years.
In 1948 the family, including Armand's father, moved to Washington state, returning to Kansas in 1949.
The Thompsons resided in El Dorado where he was employed as a grocery salesman for Ranney Davis Mercantile Co. In 1957 they moved to Wichita where he worked for L.D. Supply Co. and later for Hobart Sales and Service prior to his retirement.
The Thompsons returned to Grenola in 1971 and moved to Winfield in 1985. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 1997, and his wife died Dec. 21, 1997.
A member of the First United Methodist Church of Winfield, Thompson served on the Grenola City Council from 1925 to 1948 and served two years as Grenola city clerk during the 1970s. He was a member of the Grenola Odd Fellows Lodge for over 50 years.
Survivors include a son, Larry Thompson, Glendale, Ariz.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Ida Barnhart
LACROSSE - Ida Nelle Barnhart, 81, of LaCrosse, retired DePauw University dean of students, died May 7, 1998, at Hilltop Manor Nursing Center in Cunningham.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Udall Cemetery. Cochran Mortuary of Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Barnhart was born Nov. 14, 1916, in Wichita, to Charles William and Rilla E. (Atkins) Barnhart. She was raised by her mother and two stepmothers, Kate Jewett Barnhart and Mary P. Short Barnhart.
Survivors include a brother, Robert W. Barnhart, Wichita.
