Polly Evans

SEDAN - Bernice "Polly" Evans, 90, longtime Wauneta resident, died Oct. 18, 1997, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Wauneta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Alzheimer's & Similar Diseases Association.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of arrangements.

Evans was born Nov. 19, 1906, in La Junta, Colo., to John Thomas and Effie Eliza (Cape) Yates. She attended school in Anson.

On Sept. 9, 1925, she married Earl Edmon Evans in Anson. They moved to Grenola in 1929 and later lived in the Cloverdale, Niotaze and Jonesburg communities before settling in Wauneta in 1956. Her husband died June 21, 1991.

Evans moved to Pleasant Valley Manor in 1991.

She had been a homemaker and a bus driver for the Jonesburg district. She also worked at the Wauneta Grocery Store in the 1960s.

Evans was a member of the Niotaze United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Gene Evans, Cedar Vale; a daughter, Barbara Allan, Sedan; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Margaret Armstrong

Services for Margaret K. Armstrong, 91, who died Oct. 15, 1997, were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 18 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Frye officiated.

A memorial has been established with Wichita Masonic Home.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leo Kemp

A Rosary service for Leo C. Kemp, 82, who died Oct. 15, 1997, was held at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel.

His funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 20 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Revs. Michael Nolan and Earnest McClure and Deacon Thomas Herlocker officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Carol Hayden was the organist. John Rudzinski sang "Amazing Grace," "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and "I Am the Bread of Life."

Martha Kemp read the Scripture, Sharon Banfill gave the obituary. Arvenia Hughes and the Rev. McClure gave the remembrance.

Casket bearers were Wendell Smith, Fred Johnson, Robert Banfill, Lebaron Baptista, Andrew Fawcette and Ron Berwert.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Ona Gere

WICHITA - Ona Mae Gere, 72, of Wichita, died Oct. 20, 1997, at Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association.

Gere was born July 10, 1925, in Richmond, Mo., to Carl and Eva (West) Jones. She attended Richmond schools and at age 17 moved to San Diego where she completed her education.

On Feb. 24, 1946, she married Duane G. Gere in Yuma, Ariz. They lived and worked in the San Diego area for 16 years. She was employed in California by Convair Aircraft and later at General Dynamics from which she retired as an inspector in 1962.

In 1962 the Geres moved to Wichita where they owned and operated Welch Dry Cleaners until their retirement in 1988. She also operated her own dressmaking business, Jake's Flakes.

Survivors include her husband, Duane Gere, Wichita; two daughters, Pamela Toon, Burden, and Melinda Gere, Bossier City, La.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gladys Booher

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gladys Lyle Booher, 93, of Spokane Valley, Wash., formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 18, 1997, in Spokane.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Coffelt's Moon Chapel, Sandpoint, Idaho. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Booher was born Sept. 19, 1904, in Pickering, Mo., to Charles and Nellie (Awalt) Foster. She attended schools in Arkansas City.

On Dec. 9, 1931, she married Owen Booher in Perry, Okla. He preceded her in death.

Booher lived in the Winfield area where she farmed until 1942. She then moved to the Dover, Idaho, area. She later moved to Spokane Valley to live in the Holman Gardens retirement apartments.

Booher had taught Sunday school and worked in the church in Dover for nearly 18 years. She was also a member of the R.W. Club of Dover. She had attended Spokane Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert D. Booher, Sequim, Wash.; three daughters, Nellie Wood, Tumwater, Wash., Betty Johnson, Spokane, and Carolyn Bergman, Clarkston, Wash.; a sister, Coleitto Taylor, Winfield; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Patrick Doherty

WICHITA - Patrick Dennis Doherty, 48, of Udall, died Oct. 19, 1997, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Andover. The Rev. Bob Sweet will officiate.

Friends may call at Smith Mortuary in Derby until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Cremation will be effected.

Memorials have been established with St. Jude's Hospital and Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Oncology Unit.

Doherty was born March 29, 1949, in Atchison, to Joseph David and Anna Corinne (McCourt) Doherty. He married Debra L. Carder Sept. 20, 1976.

A manufacturing engineer at Boeing, he was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Doherty, Udall; three sons, Matthew Doherty, Udall, and Shawn Doherty and Brian Doherty, both of Haysville; three daughters, Leah Cope, Jackson, Miss.; Ouida Young, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, and Katrina Self, Wichita; his parents, Joseph and Anna Doherty, Udall; a sister, Colleen Pritchett, Derby; and eight grandchildren.

Sherry Warren

WICHITA - Sherry Lou Warren, 64, of Wichita, formerly of Augusta, died Oct. 20, 1997, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Dunsford Chapel in Augusta. The Rev. Ray Emery will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Warren was born Nov. 25, 1932, in Winfield, to Letha Watson. On July 10, 1950, she married James Warren in St. Louis. He died in 1994.

Warren was a retired crew chief and inspector at Raytheon.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherry Rhoads and Anna Greiner, both of Wichita, and Peggy Akers, Rose Hill; a brother, Ronald Watson, Winfield; a sister, Linda Helsel, Augusta; and seven grandchildren.

Sean Ireland

Sean Robert Ireland, infant son of Scott and Jancy (Murphy) Ireland, died Oct. 16, 1997, in Wichita.

Services will be private.

A memorial has been established with the nursery at First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include Sean's parents, Scott and Jancy Ireland, and a sister, Blythe, all of Winfield; his grandparents, Sheila Rogers, Winfield, Pat and Andy McMinn, Valley Center, and Bob and Kathy Ireland, Newton; and his great-grandmothers, Hazel Ireland, Holton, and Marie Meyer, Fairview.

Otis Cable

CEDAR VALE - Otis S. Cable, 91, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 20, 1997, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church and Grouse Valley Manor.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of arrangements.

Cable was born Dec. 28, 1905, five miles south of Cedar Vale, a son of Bennett J. and Nannie (Moore) Cable. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1925.

On July 28, 1933, he married Della F. Clark in Cedar Vale. They farmed all their married lives. She died March 30, 1981.

Cable was a member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church and the Agriculture Soil and Conservation Service board and a former director of the Rural Electric Association board.

Survivors include a son, Robert Cable, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Myrna Merz, Arkansas City; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sandra McKay

Sandra Ann McKay, 45, of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, died Oct. 19, 1997, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Houston will officiate.

Servivors include a brother, Tom McKay, Wichita; her legal guardian, Marilyn Johnson, Winfield; and the many caregivers at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
