Leo Kemp
Leo C. Kemp, 82, of 1719 Manning in Winfield, died Oct. 15, 1997, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday and his funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, both in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Revs. Michael Nolan and Earnest McClure and Deacon Tom Herlocker will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. to Rosary time Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Kemp was born June 22, 1915, near Nashville, Tenn. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1935.
On Sept. 24, 1937, he married Helen "Kitty" Galloway. She died Dec. 19, 1995.
During World War II Kemp served in the U.S. Army.
Kemp later worked in the laundry at St. Mary's Hospital and managed the Winfield Elks Lodge. He worked as sexton for Grace Episcopal Church and was employed by Roberts-Herlocker & St. Peter law office for more than 50 years.
He was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church but attended Holy Name Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Winfield American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Haines, Temple Hill, Md., and Martha Kemp, Shawnee Mission; and two grandchildren.
Rocky Roark
Services for S.L. "Rocky" Roark were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17, 1997, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated.
Dr. James Schuppener sang "Because He Lives" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." Louise Schuppener was the organist.
Interment was in Highland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Justin Bates, Christopher, Mark and Patrick Roark, Jim Van Winkle and Randall Watt.
Memorials have been established with Cowley County Safe Homes and Cambridge Baptist Church.
Chet Andes
Services for Chester "Chet" Andes were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 17, 1997, at Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Quentin Bennett, Lawn Sauer and Norman Reeves officiated.
Sharon Spencer sang "There's Something About That Name" and "Walk on the Water." "Ghost Riders in the Sky," performed by Sons of the Pioneers, was also played.
Interment was in Tisdale Cemetery.
Honorary casketbearers were David Beltz, Charles Craig, Virgil Davis, Lewis Doolittle, Dean Larsen, Alfred and Lloyd Shelton and Richard Warren.
Casket bearers were Arthur, Bob, Jack and Richard Biddle, Greg, Jim and Michael Feaster and Bill Rowe.
Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Society.
Hilda Ore
BURDEN - Services for Hilda Margaret Werling Ore were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 17, 1997, in Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated.
Sandy Yount was the organist. The congregation sang "Beautiful Savior," "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives."
Interment was in Burden Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Jay Williams, Orville Bair, Don Alexander, Bill Scott and Wilbur Crowley.
Casket bearers were John Glass, Merle Krug, Lowell Smith, Marvin McMinn, Don Bailey and Jim Lundy.
A memorial has been established with Trinity Lutheran Church.
Margie Goatley
ARKANSAS CITY - Margie M. Rath Goatley, 80, lifelong resident of the Arkansas City area, died Oct. 18, 1997, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Springside Cemetery
at Arkansas City. The Rev. Don Goatley will officiate.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
Goatley was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Arkansas City, to Sam and Roxie (Hudson) Stover.
On June 25, 1938, she married James Rath in Newkirk, Okla.
On Feb. 6, 1967, she married William Henry Goatley in Winfield. He died April 11, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Rath, Blackwell, Okla., and Phillip Rath, Sand Springs, Okla.; a daughter, Shirley Venegas, Newkirk, Okla.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Edward Larson
SHAWNEE - Edward W. Larson, 79, of Shawnee, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 17, 1997, in Edwardsville.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir. The Rev. Delbert Chance officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery
in Weir.
Larson was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Weir to Lars Alfred and Clara (Merciez) Larson. He graduated from Weir High School in 1936.
On June 2, 1945, he married Emma Kukovich in Girard. The Larsons lived in Weir where he farmed and worked in the coal mines. In 1952 he became a pipefitter. They moved to Winfield in 1961 and lived here until 1996.
While in Winfield, he was the business agent for Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 505 for several years before it merged with Local 171 in Wichita. He retired in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Larson, and a daughter, Conna Hiltner, both of Shawnee; two sisters, Eulalia Cline, Climax Springs, Mo., and Louise Winget, Auburn, Calif.; and two granddaughters.
Marion Adams
VALLEY FALLS - Marion F. Adams, 69, of Valley Falls, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 17, 1997, in Kansas City, Kan.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Falls. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at Mercer-Nellis Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Family and friends will meet Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Nursery Program.
Adams was born Dec. 19, 1927, at Hamberg, Ill., to Roy and Alberta (Spang) Bramham. She lived in Winfield and Andalusia, Ill., before moving to Valley Falls.
On Aug. 5, 1944, she married George R. Adams. He preceded her in death, as did two sons, Gary Adams and Steven Adams.
Adams had been employed as a nurse's aide at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby D. Adams, Rock Island, Ill., and Terry Adams, Valley Falls; four daughters, Norma Wirtz, Winfield, Caroline Rowley, Miland, Debra Halbert, South Haven, and Linda Waller, Guyana, South America; four brothers, George Bramham, Jerseyville, Ill., Allen Bramham, Hardin, Ill., Raymond Bramham, Danville Ark., and Ronald Bramham, Joplin, Mo.; four sisters, Alice Varble, Florene Bramham and Clorene McVey, all of East Moline, Ill., and Charlene Adams, Columbus; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Eilt Eilts
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Eilt Edward Eilts, 74, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 14, 1997, at a nursing home in Jacksonville.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Rick Hathaway will officiate. Inurnment will take place later.
A memorial has been established with the Calvin & Genes Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Eilts was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Rush Center. On Jan. 16, 1950, he married Betty Stout in Great Bend. She died Sept. 4, 1983.
He spent most of his life in Winfield while working as a spray painter at Beech Aircraft. He retired in 1987.
Eilts moved from the Winfield area to Jacksonville in 1992.
While in Winfield he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Georgine Barber and Mary Sickles, both of Kingman; a half-sister, Lola Michaels, Great Bend; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A son, Wesley Eilts, preceded him in death.
Nancy Smith
MCPHERSON - Nancy Lynn Smith, 32, of McPherson, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 19, 1997, at Memorial Hospital in McPherson.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Glidden-Ediger Chapel in McPherson. The Rev. Larry Harvey will officiate. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorial contributions can be made to Multi-Community Diversified Services or a charity of the donor's choice.
Smith was born March 7, 1965, in Wichita, to Bobby L. and Nancy Lee (Burditt) Smith.
She moved from Winfield to McPherson in 1995.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, Bobby L. and Flo Smith, Cherryvale; her mother and stepfather, Nancy Lee and Phillip Small, Ogden; four brothers, Bobby L. Smith II and Hobart Lee Smith, both of Blue Rapids, Paul Smith, Wichita, and Roy Smith, Ogden; and two sisters, Patsy Trost, Ogden, and Linda Inman, McPherson.
