ALAN BRESEE SMITH
OSAWATOMIE - Dr. Alan Bresee Smith, 87, died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at his home. Memorial service will be announced at a later date. He was born August 8, 1913 in Ponca City, Okla. to Alan Cleveland and Nora Burrell Smith. He grew up in Ponca City and then graduated from the Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. He was a public school music teacher for several year and then joined the US Navy an served during WW II as a gunnery officer. He then entered the San Francisco Theological Seminary and ultimately earned a doctorate of the science of theology. He founded the First Presbyterian Church of Walnut Grove, Calif. In 1952 he started 10 years as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Alva, Okla. In 1963 was named Professor of Religion and Philosophy at the College of Emporia, and returned to the parish ministry in 1975 as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Osawatomie. In retirement he served several churches in the area culminating in six years at the Hillsdale Presbyterian Church. He married
Ruth H. Lang on August 14, 1938. She was a pianist and organist and he a violinist, and they often performing for the public. She survives. He is survived by, his son Norman Smith of Stevenson, Maryland, and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters. ANNE TAYLOR
Anne Taylor, 68, Ottawa, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dengel & Son Funeral Home with Rev. William Weber officiating. She was born Jan. 3, 1932 to Thomas L. and Ella Faye (McClellon) Elder, in Ottawa. She attended Appanoose High School. She married
Merle H. Taylor Sr. at Ottawa on March 13, 1949. He survives. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident, living in Ottawa since 1957. She was a homemaker. She was a former member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Merle "Oscar" Taylor, Jr., Ottawa, and Thomas E. Taylor, Williamsburg; four sisters, Margaret Bishoff, Janie Currant, Shirley Elder and Edith McAuley, all of Ottawa; seven brothers, Carl Elder, Donald Elder, Jack Elder, Richard Elder, all of Ottawa, Kenneth Elder, Baldwin, Ray Elder and Thomas Landon Elder, Jr. of Topeka; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Joe Taylor, Sr., brother James Elder, an infant sister, and great-grandson, Domanick Taylor. Her body will lie in state at Dengel & Son after 5 p.m. to the service hour and the family will meet with friends 7-8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be at HIghland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation.
JOHN STEVE GARRETT
LAWRENCE - John Steve Garrett, 74, Lawrence, died Friday April 20, 2001 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence. He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Ottawa to Steve S. and Irene (Bartelson) Garrett. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1947. He married
Clara Belle Dulin in October 1948. She survives. He worked for Bennett Creamery for several years then worked for the City of Lawrence as a tree surgeon for several years, and for Lawrence Paper Co. He moved to Portland, Ore., and worked for the Portland Steel Mill until his retirement. Survivors include five sons, John S. Garrett, Lawrence, Phillip D. Garrett, Topeka, Tommy Brown, Ottawa, James Brown, Lawrence, and Michael Brown, Jackson, Tenn.; five daughters, Sandra Garrett, Debra Garrett, Cheryl Garrett, Rose Garrett, all of Lawrence, and Beatrice Scott, Ottawa; brother Dale Garrett, Portland, Ore.; sister, Gwendolyn Acres, Inglewood, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. His body will lie in state 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation.
PAUL E. WILSON
LAWRENCE - Paul E. Wilson, 86, Lawrence, died Sunday, April 22, 2001. There will be no funeral services. His body will be cremated and inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery, Lawrence. A memorial service may be announced later. He was born Nov. 2, 1913, near Quenemo in Osage County to Dale and Clara Wilson. He grew up and attended schools in Osage County, attended the University of Kansas and the Washburn University Law School. He was admitted the Kansas Bar in 1940 and later was licensed to practice before other courts including the Supreme Court of the United States. He was in the Army amphibious engineers during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater, and was wounded in 1945. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1973 with the rank of colonel. He married
Harriet E. Stephens of Topeka on June 16, 1941. She survives. He practiced law in Ashland, and Lyndon, was Osage County District Attorney, Assistant Attorney General of Kansas, was appointed to the faculty of the University of Kansas School of Law and later became John M. and John L. Kane distinguished Professor, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lawrence, American and Kansas Bar Associations, American Law Institute, Fellows of the American and Kansas Bar Foundations and the Kansas and Douglas County Historical Societies, serving as president in 1991. He is survived by a son, David Wilson, Springville, Utah; three daughters, Betsy Marvin, Atlanta, Ga., Polly Orbin, Powell, Wyo., and Eileen Uruh, Lawrence; a brother, Morris Wilson, Ottawa; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. ALLEN W. BISHOP
POMONA - Allen W. Bishop, 77, Pomona, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland cemetery with Rev. Marti McDougal officiating. He was born April 5, 1924, in Pittsburg to Charles and Mary (Fletcher) Bishop. He married
Beulah Mae Coombs on Oct. 8, 1941, in Garnett. Shedied April 17, 1973. He married
Betty Hay-Cox at Baldwin on Dec. 22, 1973. She survives. He became a lifelong Franklin County resident. He was employed by Killough Construction as a heavy equipment operator from 1950 to 1988. He was an honorary member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 and attended the Pomona United Methodist Church. He is survived by five sons, Roy L. Bishop, Ottawa, Larry D. Bishop, Princeton, James A. Bishop, Homewood, Charles W. Bishop, Pomona, and Robert L. Bishop, Ottawa; four stepsons, Edward Cox, Paulsville, Okla., Max Cox, Logan, Lonnie Cox, Jr., Faulk, Ark., and Mike Cox, Pomona; two daughters, Mary L. Demeny, Aberimes, Wis., and Lois J. Randel, Ottawa; a stepdaughter, Ruth Sumner, Elmore City, Okla.; two brothers, Charles Bishop, Pasadena, Calif., and Lester "Tutor" Bishop, Hutchinson; 31 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. His body was cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary.
CLEO W. BETTS
RICHMOND - Cleo W. Betts, 85, Richmond, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Richmond Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church, Garnett, with Rev. Sharon Brown Chappell officiating. He was born March 20, 1916, in Harveyville to William and Birdie (McPherson) Betts. He graduated from Harveyville High School and Baker University, Baldwin. He married
Jean Hughes on May 20, 1943, in Herington. She survives. He was a bookkeeper for Whitley Chevrolet and later Staten Chevrolet, Baldwin. He moved to Garnett in 1959 where he was employed as bookkeeper and parts manager for Whitley Chevrolet, Powers Motors, L&M Motors, and retired from Beckman Motors in 1985, all the same dealership but with different ownership. Survivors include a son, William E. Betts, Garnett; daughter Barbara Voeltz, Lincoln, Neb.; sister, Lois Larsen, Garnett; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, and two sisters. His body will lie in state after 10 a.m. Thursday at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with visitation 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Garnett.
MARY LOUISE YOUNG
WESTPHALIA - Mary Louise Young, 81, Westphalia, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Richmond Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with Rev. Phil Rhoades officiating. She was born Dec. 8, 1919, at Westphalia, to Edward and Esther (Kelly) Thomas. She married
Walter Young July 10, 1940. He died Sept. 14, 1989. She was a lifetime resident of the Westphalia area and a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Garnett, and the Cherry Mound Ladies Aid for 30 years. She is survived by a son, Tom Young, Westphalia; a brother, Paul Thomas, St. Louis; a sister, Dorothy Farwell, and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Thomas. Burial will be at the Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Westphalia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons Bible Memorial.
WILDA JEAN WRIGHT
Wilda Jean Wright, 80, Ottawa, died Sunday, April 8, 200, 1 at Whitley Place Care Center, Keller, Texas. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary with Rev. Bob Miller, Greenwood Baptist Church, Pomona, officiating. She was born in the Greenwood community on Sept. 13, 1920, to Milo Blaine and Crilla Bell (Lutton) Farris, and was a lifelong Franklin County resident. She lived in the Pomona and Greenwood area until ninth grade, moving to Ottawa and graduating from Ottawa High School in 1938. She married
Lawrence Marion Wright at Ottawa on Sept. 15, 1940. He died April 12, 1987. She was a waitress for many years, working at Oak Lodge in Baldwin from 1947 to 1951, and Crown Drug Store, Silver Leaf Cafe, Eat Shoppe, Herndon Drug, Parmelee Products, Commonwealth Theatre Drive-in, Hill House, Country Kitchen; she retired from the Hill House in March 1991. She was a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church and also attended the North Baptist Church. She was formerly active in the Extension Homemaker's Unit, and a member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by a son, Lawrence M. "Larry" Wright, Keller, Texas; two daughters, Marilyn Wright Gore, Houston, and Cara Ann Smothers, Keller; a sister, Virginia "Dode" Magers, Del Valle, Ariz., and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Farris and Merle Farris; and a sister, Bernice Spaulding. Her body will lie in state after 1 p.m. today. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Pomona. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenwood Baptist Church.
MARIAN ELIZABETH WITTENBRINK
OSAWATOMIE - Marian Elizabeth Wittenbrink, 77, Osawatomie, died Saturday, April 7, 2001. at Olathe Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, Osawatomie. She was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to Joseph Roy and Hilda Wilhemina McMahon Wilkins. She grew up and and attended school in El Dorado Springs, Mo. She married
William Carl Wittenbrink June 7, 1941, in Eldorado Springs. He survives. She lived in Missouri, Idaho, Kansas and California for three years before moving to Osawatomie in 1950. She retired from Osawatomie State Hospital in 1984 as a supervisor in the laundry department. She was a member of the Osawatomie United Methodist Church, Osawatomie chapter #26 of the Order of Eastern Star, and the Lane Evelena Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was Osawatomie Chapter Worthy Matron seven times and a Past Grand Representative. She is also survived by a son, William Carl Wittenbrink II, Osawatomie; a daughter Judith Ann McDowel Birchard, Lane; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Family visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Miami Memorial Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Foundation.
ARTHUR WILLIAMS
Arthur Williams, 52, Ottawa, died Wednesday at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka, from injuries suffered in a traffic accident on US-59 near Lawrence. Arrangements will be announced by the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home.
