DORIS DARLENE SCRAPER
BALDWIN - Doris Darlene Scraper, 68, Baldwin, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday in Oakwood Cemetery. She was born June 4, 1932, in Baldwin to Opie Ralph and Gladys Helena (Vaughn) Kelly. She grew up in Baldwin, graduating from Baldwin City High School in 1950. She worked for the Lawrence Post Office as a postal carrier for several years. She later worked as a child care provider in the Baldwin City area for several years. She married
Joseph Scraper in Baldwin on Oct. 29, 1974. He survives. She was a member of the Coast to Coast Travel Club, associate member of the Lawrence Chapter of NARFE, served on the Baldwin Zoning Appeals Board, and an active volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. She is survived by two sons, Joseph Scraper, Jr. Topeka, and James Scraper, North Port, Fla.; six daughters, Donna Bergman, Perry, Debi Taylor, Lawrence, Elizabeth Harper, Perry, Susan Bradley, Wichita, Diana King, Hanley, Mo., Stephanie Scraper, Lawrence; 20 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a son, Derek Anderson, and two brothers, Robert Kelly and William Kelly. The family invites friends to the Scraper home from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Diabetes Association or TSCPL Talking Books and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Baldwin.
JOE EDLER POMONA
Joe Edler, 77, Baldwin, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Pomona. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wilson and Son Chapel in Wellsville. He was born May 12, 1923, at Baldwin to Albert and Olive (Vitt) Edler. He attended Rosco Grade Wchool. He served in World War II, was in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he farmed in Clearfield, worked at Hercules and operated a trucking business for many years. He is a member of the Ottawa VFW. He is survived by a sister, Mable Kalb, Baldwin; three stepchildren, Darrell Otto, Baldwin; Gynith Foster, Fort Smith, Ark., and Kathy Leach, Pomona; one nephew, Kermit Kalb, Wellsville; and one niece, Glenna McKinney, Perry; and five great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son. Burial will be at the Wellsville Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Deay Cemetery.
FRANCES H. MAUK
TOPEKA - Frances H. Mauk, 92, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Topeka Southgate Village. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with Rev. Leray Reynolds officiating. She was born Aug. 20, 1908 in Kirksville Mo. to Henry Franklin and Lenora Ellen (Smading) Yadon. She was a homemaker and farm wife. She lived in the Centerville area for 40 years, Garnett, 1974 to 1995, and Topeka the last 6 years. She married
Clarence Forest Mauk at Mound City on Sept. 7, 1929. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Osawatomie Assembly of God Church, Charter member of the Ozark Camping Club in Anderson and Linn Counties. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Goodrich Cemetery, Goodrich.
HAROLD GAHAGAN
Harold R. Gahagan, 71, Ottawa, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Services will be 10 am. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was born Sept. 17, 1929, in St. Paul to Joseph and Zella (Stevenson) Gahagan. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1948 and received a business degree from Parsons Junior College in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1950 to 1953 and on active duty from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War, with his tour of duty including Germany. He married
Gretchen Glick on Aug. 3, 1957, at Pittsburg. She survives. He was employed by National Gypsum Company in Parsons from 1950 to 1953. In 1955, he was employed by the Gas Service Company in Kansas City as a consumer service sales representative, transferring to Ottawa in 1960. He retired in 1988. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lions Club, Gas Company Retirees, Library Board, COF Training Services Board and the coffee klatch at the Horseshoe Cafe. He served as past president of Sacred Heart School PTO and past president of OID, all of Ottawa. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Teresa Calvert, of Overland Park, and Bridget Gahagan of Mission; a son, Patrick, of Overland Park; two sisters, Mary Esther Ramsey, of Parsons, and Kathryn Holland, of Las Vegas; a brother, Col. James Donald Gahagan, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif; a stepsister, Clarice Hammett, of Coronado, Calif; four grandchildren and one foster granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Underhill; and a brother, Joseph Gahagan. His body will lie in state at Dengel & Son Mortuary until the service hour. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, followed by a family visitation from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. HAROLD ANDREW CHERRY WAVERLY
Harold Andrew Cherry, 78, Waverly, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel Inc in Garnett, with Pastor Gary Benjamin officiating. He was born Nov. 17, 1922, at Westphalia to Jacob and Stella Mae (Boots) Cherry. He graduated from Westphalia High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer and has lived in Waverly for 40 years. He married
Martha Lee Whiteford in April 1947 in Wichita. They divorced. He married
Lucy May Whaley on Jan. 19, 1982, at Miami, Okla. She survives. He was a 56-year member of the Garnett Masonic Lodge, Delphian Lodge #4. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Bill, of Ottawa, and Jacob, of Burlington; two stepsons, Donald Millington and Richard Tinsley, both of Garnett; a daughter, Judy Williams, of Garnett; a sister, Helen Bailey, of Garnett; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His body will lie in state after noon Saturday. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at the Garnett Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Christopher Robert "Chris" Mohammed Jr., Kansas City, Mo., died Monday, April 30. 2001, as a result of a traffic accident in Kansas City, Mo. A memorial service will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church, Belton, Mo. He was born Nov. 17, 1978, to Christopher and Deb Mohammed at Camp Pendelton, Calif. He was an electronics student at DeVry Institute, Kansas City. Survivors include his parents; sisters Nina Mohammed, Ottawa, Teresa Mohammed, Kansas City, Kan., and Alma Davilatoro, New York City; brother Michael Davila, U.S. Marine Corps; his grandparents Betty and Care Minehart, Poplar Bluff, Mo., his aunts Pat Dellinger, Fairdealing, Mo., and Teresa Cunningham, Poplar Bluff; three nephews and two cousins. GLEN EARL MOWRY
OSAWATOMIE - Glenn Earl Mowry, 86, Osawatomie, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Spring Hill. Funeral services were this afternoon at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, Osawatomie. He was born July 6, 1914, in Kansas City, Mo., to Leo and Grace Omer Mowry. He lived in Colorado and Arkansas before moving to Osawatomie where he graduated from high school in 1934. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad on the bridge gang. He left the railroad and went to work at the Osawatomie State Hospital in the laundry in 1963. He retired in 1979. He was a member of the Beagle United Methodist Church, the Odd Fellows and the Rebekahs. He was one of the original members of the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers Association. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Lindsay, Beagle, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Burial was at Mound Creek Cemetery. Memorials to the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers Association.
JACK EDWARD SERENE
SPARKS, Nev. - Jack Edward Serene, 65, formerly of Garnett, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Washoe Progressive Care Center, Sparks, Nev. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Welda cemetery with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. He was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Welda to Floyd I. and Bonnie Gilman (Drybread) Serene. He graduated from Ottawa High school in 1953. He attended Ottawa University. He moved to San Francisco in 1965 and was employed by Crocker Paper Cutting Company where he worked for 25 years. He transferred to Sparks, Nev., to work for the same company until he retired due to his health. He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Gilman, Garnett; stepfather, Marvin Gilman, Garnett; uncle Jack Serene, Garnett, and several cousins. LAFAYETTE, La. - John Stratton Page, 89, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at Lafayette, La., General Medical Center. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Highland cemetery with Rev. Jerry Harnden officiating. He was born Oct. 16, 1911, in Ottawa, to Ralph E. and Marion (Stratton) Page. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1931 and the University of Kansas in 1939 with a degree in mining engineering, and began working for Magnolia Oil Company in Alliance, Ohio. On Sept. 4, 1939, he married
Rose Marie Stiller. She died in 1972. He married
Lorrel Darlene Brown in July 1973. She survives. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946, and served in the European Theater. He returned to his job at Magnolia Oil Company working as a geophysicist in numerous towns in central and southern United States. He made his home in New Orleans until his retirement from Mobil Oil Company in 1974. Following his retirement, he lived in Hide-A-Way Lake, Texas, and moved to Lafayette to be near his son and family in 1997. He is survived by a son, Donald N. Page, Lafayette; two daughters, Donna Marie Glackman of Thornton, Colo., and Judith Anne York, Pasadena, Texas; a brother, Randolph Page, Dublin, N.H.; two sisters, Eloise Pasco, Essex, Mass., and Ruth Behl, Springvale, Kan.; and four granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a son, John Stratton Page II, and three sisters. Family will receive friends 8 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, which is in charge of local arrangements.

LYNDON - Maurice Cooper, 79, Lyndon, died Saturday, April 21, 2001. at Osage Nursing and Rehabilitation, Lyndon. Funeral services will be graveside 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lyndon Cemetery. He was born April 7, 1922, at Emporia to John and Edna Roletta Metcalfe Cooper. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1940 to 1942, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 with the 886th Chemical Air Operations in the Phillipines and New Guinea. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1950 with the 307th Maintenance Supply Squadron. He married
Maudie Williams; they divorced. He married
Wilma Evelyn Schmitendorf Glenn on June 16, 1968, in Emporia. She survives. He moved to Lyndon from Emporia in 1968. He worked for Montgomery Wards for 20 years, was custodian for the Lyndon schools for 2 years, and worked for Graphic Promotions as a truck driver and shrink machine operator. He was a member of the American Legion Post #125 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars #6406, both of Lyndon. He is survived by a son, John Cooper, Wichita; stepson, Stan Glenn, McMurray, Pa.; daughter, Chris, Burns, address unavailable; stepdaughter, Judith Hill, Ocean Springs, Miss.; two sisters, Lila Thornton, Rosehill, and Loretta Smith, Wichita, and five grandchildren. His body will lie in state 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Feltner Chapel, Lyndon. Cremation will follow. LAWRENCE - John Steve Garrett, 74, Lawrence, died Friday April 20, 2001 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence. He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Ottawa to Steve S. and Irene (Bartelson) Garrett. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1947. He married
Clara Belle Dulin in October 1948. She survives. He worked for Bennett Creamery for several years then worked for the City of Lawrence as a tree surgeon for several years, and for Lawrence Paper Co. He moved to Portland, Ore., and worked for the Portland Steel Mill until his retirement. Survivors include five sons, John S. Garrett, Lawrence, Phillip D. Garrett, Topeka, Tommy Brown, Ottawa, James Brown, Lawrence, and Michael Brown, Jackson, Tenn.; five daughters, Sandra Garrett, Debra Garrett, Cheryl Garrett, Rose Garrett, all of Lawrence, and Beatrice Scott, Ottawa; brother Dale Garrett, Portland, Ore.; sister, Gwendolyn Acres, Inglewood, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. His body will lie in state 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation.
