Clarence Robert Cox
Clarence Robert Cox, 93, of St. Paul, KS died 12:05pm Sunday February 7, 2010 at Prairie Village Nursing Home in St. Paul, KS following a short illness. Clarence was born August 9, 19 16 in Pollock, MO to John Clarence and Helen Luverna (Holliday) Cox. He was a veteran of WWII and was a second draftee in Montgomery County, KS in 1941. He served as coastal artillery, tank corps, and later became an airplane mechanic on Piper Cub Spotter Planes for the field artillery fire. He was in Europe when the war ended and was discharged from the army at Ft. Leavenworth on November 5, 19 45. In 1943 Clarence married
Helen Muncy in Tulsa, OK; they later divorced. In 1981 he married
Joan Coates in Erie, KS; she survives in St. Paul, KS. As a civilian Clarence worked with his dad in the sawmill and logging business. He later worked in the earth moving and land clearing business. At the end of his working career he spent his time driving for Hardwood Products, Carter Sawmill, and Pallet Manufacturing Inc. He finally retired in 1995. He was a member of the Methodist Church in St. Paul, KS. Survivors include his wife, children Fred Cox and wife Abbie of Alma, AR, Steven Cox and wife Candice of Oklahoma City, OK; brother Jim D. Cox of Colorado Springs, CO; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Graveside Services will be 11am Tuesday February 16, 2010 at the Ft. Scott National cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS with Rev. James Fellers officiating. The Ft. Riley Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. Margaret Ann Hull
PITTSBURG — Margaret Ann Hull, 65, of Pittsburg, KS, died At 8:10 p.m. Wednesday February 10, 2010 at the Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg. She was born August 2, 1944 in Mulberry, KS the daughter of Earl and Pearl (Dodson) Hull. She was a convenience store manager for most of her life. She was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Pittsburg. Survivors include 2 nieces: Dianna Lucas of Frontenac and Nancy Smith of Nixa, MO. She was preceded in death by her Parents and sister Opal May Lucas. Memorial services will be 10:30 am Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Liberty Baptist Church in Pittsburg with Pastor Sandy Stallings officiating. Stephen (Steve) E. Merando
Stephen (Steve) E. Merando, 62, of Capaldo died at 5:40 p.m. Thursday February 18, 2010 surrounded by his family at his home in Capaldo after a six-month battle with cancer. He was born November 6, 1947 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Joe and Clara Mae (Morey) Merando. He was a lifetime resident of the Frontenac/Capaldo area; he attended Frontenac Schools and was a 1965 graduate of Frontenac High School and a 1976 graduate of PSU. Steve served in the National Guard from 1967 until 1973. He married
Marsha Hudson July 11, 1970 in Pittsburg; she survives at the home. Steve was a plumber by trade; working for himself; and the local plumbers & steamfitters union and most recently for the Parsons State Hospital. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church-Frontenac; the Frontenac Knights of Columbus; a 42 year member of the Frontenac American Legion and #441 the local plumbers & steamfitters union. Survivors include his wife Marsha of the home; 4 sons - Chris Merando and wife Jennifer of Pittsburg, Chad Merando and wife Melisa of Independence, Anthony Merando and wife Lacee of Frontenac, Adam Merando of Kansas City, KS; a brother Joe David (Jody) Merando; 3 sisters-Jolene Moriconi and husband Roy, Karen Doue, Rosann Chance and husband Roger; 4 Grandchildren Samantha, Hannah, Sophia and James Merando; aunts Rosez Kritzer, Lala Payne, Angeline Brunskill, June Morey, Pam Carpenter and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Zachary Merando. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday February 23, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Father Patrick York as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mount Carmel cemetery where the Frontenac American Legion will provide flag folding ceremonies. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Monday at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac where the family will receive friends following until 8 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Monday. Gayla Mae Kurtz
Gayla Mae Kurtz, 53 of Pittsburg died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday March 7, 2010 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO. She was born June 9, 1956 in Herington, KS the daughter of Bill and Carol (Brouhard) Humphreys. She has lived in the Pittsburg area for the past 10 years moving from Lacygne, KS. She was a homemaker. While living in the Kansas City area she was a member of the Antioch Hills Baptist Church in Overland Park. Gayla was also involved in helping with the local Special Olympics. Survivors include 3 sons-Pat Kurtz of Pilot Grove, MO, Phil Kurtz of Frontenac, KS, William Kurtz of Carl Junction, MO; her mother Carol Troop and husband Paul of Frontenac; a brother Terry Humphreys of Sedalia, MO; 2 sisters Brenda Deringer and Pamela Terry both of Pittsburg; 2 Grandchildren and a significant other Dan Lewis. She was preceded in death by her father. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday March 13th at the South Broadway Baptist Church in Pittsburg with Reverend Dan Moss officiating. James Henry Menghini
GIRARD — James Henry Menghini, 54, of Girard, passed away Monday March 8, 2010 at his home following a long illness. He was born July 15, 1954 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Henry “Hank” and Ruth (Zehr) Menghini. He is survived by his mother of the home in Girard. He was preceded in death by his father Hank Menghini. Graveside services will be 10:30 am, Saturday March 13, 2010 at the Mt. Carmel cemetery with Fr. Thomas Stroot officiating. The family will receive friends at the Friskel Funeral Home from 9:30 am until the procession leaves for the cemetery at 10:20 am. Julia A. Marlier
FRONTENAC — Julia A. Marlier, 83, of Frontenac, KS died at 6 am, Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg following a long illness. She was born October 18, 1926 in Franklin, KS the daughter of Frank and Julia (Ustar) Nolimal. On June 16, 1951 she was united in marriage to Walter Marlier in Franklin, KS. He survives of the home. Julia was a homemaker and also worked as a receptionist for Dr. Williams, Optometrist office. She was a member of the S.N.P.J. Lodge and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post # 43. Additional survivors include a daughter Leann Marlier of Frontenac, a son Mike Marlier and his wife Wendy of Frontenac; three grandchildren Jessica and Jeff Olson of Overland Park, KS, Brett Marlier of Pittsburg and Kelsy Marlier of Frontenac. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters Ann Zimmer and Mary Potorny, a brother Frank Nolimal, Jr. and a grandson Aaron Marlier. Graveside services will be 10 am, Monday, March 29, 2010 at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Burial will follow. Family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home and follow in the procession to the cemetery. The procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 am. Sharon S. Jones
Sharon S. Jones, 71, of Frontenac died at 5:07 a.m. Wednesday March 31, 2010 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. She was born September 5, 1938 in Ottawa, KS the daughter of Charley Adam and Minnie Marie (Sinclair) Nenno. She lived in the Frontenac/Pittsburg area her entire life. She was a graduate of Frontenac High School. Sharon worked as a cook for 28 years at Barney’s Drive Inn in Pittsburg and most recently she worked the past 13 years at Taco Bell. She was baptized into the Methodist Faith. Survivors include 2 sons-Charlie Jones of Frontenac, Jay William Jones of Webb City, MO; a brother Gene Nenno of Oklahoma City, OK; 2 sisters Charlene Smith of Frontenac and Bonnie Shepherd of Colorado; 2 Grandsons Jeremiah drift Skidmore Jones and Jacob talon Swope Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Wanda (Nenno) Cook Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday April 5, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac. Joan Cox, 88, of St. Paul, KS, died 4:00am Friday April 2, 2010 at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul, KS following an extended illness. Joan was born November 21, 19 21 in Sycamore, KS the daughter of Jesse Lee and Anna Louise ( Neptune ) Coates. In 1981 she married
Clarence R. Cox in Erie, KS; he preceded her in death on February 7, 2010. Joan worked as a Secretary, Medical Records Technician, Social Worker, an interviewer for the Census Department and Agricultural Department and wrote St. Paul news for 3 local papers for many years. She was a former member of the St. Paul School Board and Prairie Mission Retirement Village. She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul, KS. Survivors include 3 daughters Anna Helm of Portland, OR, Marie Ericson of Sacramento, CA, Evelyn Alsup and husband Cleve of Skiatook, OK, two stepsons Fred Cox and wife Abbie of Alma, AR, Steve Cox and wife Candice of Oklahoma City, OK; sister Ellen Henderson of Georgetown, TX; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter Iris Brewer and sister Comfort Haverstick. Graveside Services will be 12:30pm Thursday April 8, 2010 at the National cemetery in Ft. Lester Snyder
FRONTENAC — Lester Snyder, 84, of Frontenac, KS, went to be with the Lord, at 5:22pm, Friday, April 23, 2010 at his home after along illness. Lester was born July 3, 1925 in Wayne County, IN to Floyd and Flora (Harris) Snyder. He attended area schools. He married
Marjorie Frazier. She preceded him in death in the spring of 1977. He later married
Mary Bills on Sept. 30, 1977 in Haviland, KS. She survives of the home. Lester was an ordained Minister and Evangelist spreading the word of Lord, in various places in Indiana. Later he preached in Pratt, KS from 1972-1978, then North Branch, KS from 1979-1990 then finally in Olive Hill from 1990 until his retirement in 2002. Throughout all of his life he did lots of carpentry work for many people. Lester attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg, since coming here 2002. Lester collected bells, electric trains, little cars and trucks. He was also avid woodworker, making many toys for his grandchildren. While in the ministry Lester traveled with the Teen Ambassador Choir spreading the word of the Lord, and he was active with the youth at Camp Quaker Haven, Arkansas City, KS. Additional survivors include his daughters Sandra Harris (Roy) of Winchester, IN; Anita Thorne (Kim) of Lynn, IN; Debbie Baker of Mulvane, KS; Rhonda Smith (Brian) of Loveland, CO and Laura Handshy (Chad) of Frontenac, KS; brother Willis Snyder (Pat) of Delphi, IN; son-in-law Steve Hendrickson (Liz) of Winchester, IN and daughter-in-law Linda Snyder of Branson, MO; host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and numerous of nieces and nephews. Lester was preceded in death by his parents; son Paul Snyder; daughter Patricia Hendrickson; 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Celebration of life will be 1:00pm, Friday, April 30, 2010 at the First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Garden of Memories cemetery in rural Pittsburg. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the First Church of the Nazarene. Janis G. Buzard
FRONTENAC — Janis G. Buzard, 70, of Frontenac died Tuesday May 4, 2010, at the Freeman Hospital of complications from pneumonia. She was born January 6, 1940 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of Oberdon “Cogo” and Darlene (Rhoades) Bartelli. She attended Frontenac Schools and graduated from the Frontenac High School with the Class of 1958. On Nov. 12, 1992 she was united in marriage to Rick Buzard in Kansas City, KS; he survives her of the home. She was a lifetime area resident and a member of the Frontenac United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine. Additional survivors include two daughters: Yvette Bruenjes of Frontenac and Yvonne Bruenjes of Chicago, IL; five sons: Keith Mangile and wife Julie of Drexel, MO, David Mangile of Frontenac, Nathan Buzard and wife Angela of Wichita, KS, James Buzard and wife Julie of Great Bend, KS, Andrew Buzard of Pittsburg a brother Stephen Bartelli and wife Alice of Greenfield, IL; five grandchildren: Kacha Hendrix, Kelly McWhorter, Travis McWhorter, Natalie Coomes, Quintin Buzard; two great grandchildren: McKenzie and Destiny Hendrix. She was preceded in death by her Parents and a brother Gary Bartelli. Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Friskel Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Paschke officiating.
