Billy R. Smith
FRONTENAC, KS – Billy R. Smith, 56, of Frontenac, KS, died at 5:17 am, Monday, June 23, 2014 at his home of a long illness. He was born March 10, 1958 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Finis Billy Ray and Frankie Delores Perona Smith. He had been a lifelong resident of the Pittsburg and Frontenac area. He was a graduate of Frontenac High School and attended vocational technical school for two years. He married
Rose Ann Albers on July 6, 1984 in Frontenac, KS and she survives at the home in Frontenac. Mr. Smith was the owner and operator of Albers Marine in Arma, KS and also worked for the Unified School District #249 in Frontenac, KS for several years. Membership was held in the Frontenac United Methodist Church, the Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg where he also served as President of the Mirza Shrine Arab Patrol, Pittsburg Masonic Lodge, and the Rollin Nostalgia Car Club. Survivors include his wife Rose Ann Smith of the home, two sons Billy Ray Smith Jr of KC, KS, Glenn Harrison of Arma, KS, one daughter Michela Fry and her husband Brandon of Olathe, his mother Frankie Stotler of Frontenac, two sisters Rose Mary Weber and husband Joe of Franklin, KS and Terri Merando of Pittsburg, mother in law Kathern Albers of Frontenac, brother in law Carl Albers of Colorado, nieces and nephews Jimmy Weber, Derek Merando, Francesca Fleming, Sharde’ Albers, and Taylor Albers. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial services will be 10 am Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay in Frontenac, with the Rev. Daryl Gaddy, officiating. The family will receive their friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the Friskel Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to the Mirza Shrine or Hospice Compassus in care of the funeral home.
John Joseph Tocci
John Joseph Tocci, 57, of Frontenac, KS died Friday July 4, 2014 at his home following an illness. John was born November 14, 1956 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Joseph and Ruby (Dickinson) Tocci. John has lived in the area most all of his life graduating from Frontenac High School in 1974. He later received training in heating and air conditioning repair and later Harley Davidson Motorcycle School. John was a Veteran of the Navy. John worked for Masonite in Pittsburg, KS for many years. On November 13, 1979 John married
Debbie Ann Pardee in Scammon, KS at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church; she survives at the home. John was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS; was involved in Perpetual Adoration at the church; Precious Blood Group at the church; was a member of the American Legion; was known to be an expert on WWII History; loved animals; Harley Davidson Motorcyles and donated blood every chance he got. Survivors include his wife; sons John Anthony Tocci and wife Crystal of Springfield, MO and Daniel Joseph Tocci of Frontenac, KS; sisters Paula Teats and husband James of Frontenac, KS and Nancy Russell and husband Warren of Frontenac, KS; grandchildren Adrienne Alexis Tocci and Piper Judy; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother Rex Boling. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Friday July 11, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Mt. Carmel cemetery in Frontenac, KS. Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm Thursday July 10, 2014 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, KS; family will receive friends following the rosary. Friends may call the funeral home after 1:00pm Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Ellen Lorrine Vasquez
Ellen Lorrine Vasquez, 85, of Hepler, KS died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday July 17, 2014 at the Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. According to her wishes she has been taken for cremation. Tony Albert Kennedy
Tony Albert Kennedy, 56, of St. Paul, KS died 8:55pm Monday July 21, 2014 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul, KS following a long illness. Tony was born January 9, 1958 in Chanute, KS the son of Emil Albert Sr. and Nina Pauline (Noe) Kennedy. Tony was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of St. Paul High School. On June 9, 1984 Tony married
Candace Sue Lundblade in St. Paul, KS; she survives at the home. Tony worked as an Electrician for Local Union 226. Tony was of the Christian Faith; in his free time he enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. Survivors include his father and stepmother Era Alyene Kennedy of St. Paul, KS; a son Dustin Allen Kennedy of St. Paul, KS; siblings Tom Kennedy and wife Helen, Paulana Hopkins and husband Joe, Nancy Threlfall and husband Terry, Ed Kennedy, Joan LaForte and husband Mark, Lean Kennedy, Jack Kennedy and wife Teresa and Jerry Kennedy and wife Melissa and many nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his mother; sons Brandon Lee Kennedy and Robert Arven Kennedy; brother Jim Kennedy and a great niece Aurora Geier. Memorial Services will be 10am Saturday July 26, 2014 at the Methodist Church in St. Paul, KS with Pastor Curt Zachary officiating. Josephine Barton
Josephine Barton, 87, of the Girard/Franklin area died at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday July 29, 2014 at the Girard Medical Center in Girard, KS. She had been a resident of Medical Lodge of Frontenac (Sunset Manor Nursing Home) for the past 8 years. She was born May 22, 1927 in Franklin, KS the daughter of Frank and Mary (Cukjati) Lipasek. She attended elementary school in Franklin and was a graduate of Arma High School. She was a lifetime resident of the Franklin/Girard area. Josephine married
Edward Polchlopek on September 16, 1950; he preceded her in death on November 25, 1953. She then married
Virgil Barton on December 22, 1956 in Girard, KS; they were later divorced. She worked for Va-co-hy and was a homemaker. Josephine was a member of the Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Girard. Survivors include two sons Ed Polchlopek and wife Donna of Girard, Chuck Barton and wife Regina of Farlington; two daughters Betty Giefer and husband Danny of Emporia, Della Hohl and husband Melvin of Pittsburg; 5 grandchildren Jeff Giefer and wife Mandy, Stefanie Beesley and husband Greg, Sara Hanson and husband Adam, Kacey Schick and husband Dallas, Scott Polchlopek; 4 Great-grandchildren Peyton Beesley, Kennedy Schick, Briley Hanson and Arrington Giefer and 1 sister Jenny Fontaine of Peculiar, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers Frank, Tony, John, Augi and Joe Lipasek and 4 sisters Rose Lepoglow, Mary Maxwell, Fanny Lepo and Louise Leroy. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday August 1, 2014 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with Father Thomas Stroot officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Carmel cemetery in Frontenac. Troy Dale Waggoner
Troy Dale Waggoner, 49, of Pittsburg, KS died 3:10am Sunday August 3, 2014 at the Medicalodge in Pittsburg, KS following an illness. Troy was born April 4, 1965 in Joplin, MO the son of Wayne and Virla (Waggoner) Slaggar. Troy has lived in the area most of his life and attended area schools. Troy was of the Christian Faith. Survivors include his mother Virla Waggoner and stepfather James Zimmerman of Pittsburg, KS. Troy was preceded in death by his father. Private burial will take place at Frontenac City cemetery with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Arrangements are by Friskel Funeral Home of Frontenac, KS.
Esther Mayme Kuhel
Esther Mayme Kuhel, 93, of Girard, KS passed peacefully away the morning of Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in the presence of her daughter and granddaughter. Esther was born August 4, 1921 to Andrew and Sarah Odom in Augusta, Arkansas. She was their fourth child and only daughter. Esther moved to the DeSoto, Kansas area in early in childhood where she attended school up to the eighth grade, leaving school to care for her dying mother. Esther then moved to Arma, Kansas where she met and married
Tony Kuhel in 1942. When he was drafted into the Air Force, she followed him around the country working various jobs in support of the war effort. Her travels took her from Arlington, Virginia to Huntington Beach, California. After his discharge in 1946, they moved back to the Girard, Kansas area. They eventually purchased farmland, in the area. She lived in the same location for nearly 60 years. In addition, Esther worked at the Kansas Ammunitions Plant in Parsons for many years before retirement. Esther was a strong woman, with a tremendous amount of heart and courage. She could handle almost anything with love, faith, and elbow grease. Not everyone is lucky enough to have this kind of strong, beautiful example in their lives, and we feel truly blessed to have had Esther in ours. Esther is survived by her daughter Eileen Hoover of Prairie Village, KS; granddaughter Sherry Nero and husband John Nero of Prairie Village, KS; Brant Hoover and family of Ozark, MO; Robert Hoover and family of Monroe City, MO; Sister-in-law, Marie Murnane and husband, Joe of Girard. Esther was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers; her husband Tony; two infant children; and son-in-law Larry Hoover. Funeral services will be held 1pm Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and/or the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Estelle J. Crosetto
Estelle J. Crosetto, 94, of Girard formerly of Radley, died at 6:20 pm, Sunday August 10, 2014 at the Heritage Nursing Home in Girard. She was born January 24, 1920 in Breezy Hill, KS the daughter of John and Katherine (Yaler) Janezic. On June 19, 1937 she was united in marriage to Alphonso Crosetto in Girard. She was a homemaker and also worked for Annshire Garment Company for 30 years, she also worked at the Kansas Ammunition Plant in Parsons. Survivors include a daughter Sharon Adamson and husband Richard of Girard; two grandchildren: Terry Adamson of Girard and Mary Kay Alumbaugh of Owasso, OK; three great grandchildren: Garrett and Christian Alumbaugh both of Owasso and Calvin Alumbaugh of Joplin, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Frank, John and Fred Janezic; four sisters: Mary Doppke, Rose Kotar, Emma White and Josephine Terrebroadt. Graveside services will be 10 am, Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Friskel Funeral Home from 9:30 am until the procession leaves for the cemetery. Mary Ginardi
Mary Ginardi, 101, died on August 13, 2014 at Via Christi Medical Center. She was a resident of Frontenac, Kansas, making her home at 306 North Cayuga, where she spent most of her life. Mary was born May 24, 1913 in Breezy Hill, KS, the daughter of John and Ellena Mattivi. She lived her entire life in the Frontenac area and was a graduate of Frontenac High School. Throughout Mary’s life she worked at a variety of jobs, including Peter Pan Ice Cream, making deserts for Frontenac Schools, and putting hems in the pants of soldier’s uniforms. While living in Kansas City she worked for Hallmark and made cards and lastly, she worked for Montgomery Ward. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved her family and her church, and was an incredible lifelong homemaker. Mary enjoyed meeting people. She was a skilled conversationalist and took great delight in “just sitting around talking”. Mary was an exceptional cook, always excited to try new recipes. She took pride in preparing food that her family requested and relished. Some of her most “famous” dishes included pecan pie, chocolate éclairs, and her holiday treat plates, which were as appealing on the outside as they were tasty on the inside! Family members and friends were benefactors of her knitting and crocheting hobbies. She created masterful sweaters and afghans, along with hand towels and collars. If something could be knitted or crocheted, Mary could make it! She made heirloom sweater and bootie sets for babies born to members of her circle of friends and family, and occasionally sold some of her creations to members of the community who appreciated her handiwork. Mary was a marathon shopper! She could window shop and browse for hours without becoming fatigued. She always appreciated a good joke because she loved to laugh and was quite the storyteller. Her ability to remember details was enviable. Mary never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or special event that involved a loved one, and she always searched for “just the right” card that expressed her sentiments. Mary was a unique and precious soul who will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her son, Ronald Ginardi of the home, and many devoted nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jules Ginardi, her sister, Isabel Beitzinger, her parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday August 16, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Father Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday the 15th at the Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac where the family will receive friends following the rosary until 7 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac. Zita Ann Nicolas
Zita Ann Nicolas, 84, of Parsons, KS, died at 3:05 am, at the Medicalodge in Columbus, KS where she had been a resident for several months. She was born August 9, 1930 in Greenbush, KS the daughter of Albert and Rose (Monahan) Nicolas. She was a longtime resident of Parsons and a member of the St. Patrick Perish. Zita worked for Kansas Power and Light Company, (now known as Westar Energy) for 40+ years. She worked in the front office and later became an office assistant. Zita was very family oriented and was close to her sisters and was a doting aunt to her nieces and nephews. Survivors include a sister Margaret Hill of Ontario, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters: Loretta Nicolas, Mary Farrell, Alberta Engelman and Ruth Watson; two brothers: Philip and Hugh Nicolas. Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 pm Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Greenbush Catholic Church in Greenbush, KS. Burial will follow in the Greenbush Cemetery. The rosary will be recited just before the service at 1:30 pm, family will receive friends at the church from 1pm until the rosary begins.
