James K. Cavenee 1904-2004
James Kent Cavenee, age 99, died Sept. 23, 2004, at St. Joseph Village in Manhattan.
He was born Oct. 12, 1904, in Lyons, the son of James Doty and Anna Louise Clutter Cavenee. Mr. Cavenee lived in Great Bend until July 2002, when he moved to Tribune, and then to Manhattan about three weeks before his death.
Mr. Cavenee was a salesman of boats and motorcycles in Great Bend.
He enjoyed boating, his coffee group that met at Burger King in Great Bend and his daily walks.
In July 1925, in Hutchinson, he was married
to the former Cora Ellen Snodgrass. Mrs. Cavenee preceded him in death in April 1989. He was also preceded in death by three children: Joan Ryan, Gordon Cavenee and James F. Cavenee.
Survivors include one son: William “Bill” Cavenee of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Kelsey Rose of Longmont, Colo.; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Manhattan with Steve Graber officiating. Inurnment will be at Little River.

MARJORIE COFFMAN
OVERBROOK - Marjorie M. Coffman, 90, Overbrook, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at her home. Services were Monday at the Overbrook United Methodist Church, with burial at Overbrook Cemetery. She was born July 5, 1910, south of Overbrook to Ross Albert and Maudie Ethel (Radcliff) Coffman. She grew up in the area, graduating from Overbrook Rural High School in 1927. She attended Clark's Secretarial School, Topeka. She moved to Kansas City, Mo. in 1942 and worked as a secretary for Fitts Dry Goods Company, Roddis Lumber Company, and retired from Weyerhauser Lumber Company in 1975. She returned to Overbrook after retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Amaranth Club in Overbrook. She is survived by two sisters, Doris Marshall and Allene Hesseltine, both of Overbrook, and seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William G. Coffman and Albert W. Clara Elizabeth Galliart 1909-2004
RUSSELL — Clara Elizabeth Galliart, 95, died Sept. 27 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. She was born April 16, 1909, at Milberger, the daughter of Victor Emmanuel and Elizabeth Pope Keil. She married
Ernest George Herman Galliart Dec. 24, 1934, at Dubuque. He died June 9, 1992. A resident of Russell since 1991, coming from Beaver, she was a housewife.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.
Survivors include two sons, Vernon Dean Galliart of Folsom, Calif., and Kenneth Lee Galliart of Bunker Hill; one brother, Hubert Harry Keil of Milberger; one sister, Josephine Springer of Hoisington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Gene Ernest Galliart; six brothers, Ernest Keil, Waldomar Keil, Clifford Dean Keil, Julius Keil, Levin Melvin Keil and Gerhardt Keil; and two sisters, Florence Keil and Esther Keil.
Funeral was Saturday at the church in Dorrance, with the Rev. Jim Wagner officiating. Burial was at Dubuque cemetery south of Dorrance. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Pohlman-Heise Mortuary of Russell.

Mariah Lee Jantz Chestnut
WICHITA — Mariah Lee Jantz Chestnut, 28, Pet Haven vet technician and floral designer, died Thursday, Sept. 30. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East in Wichita.
Survivors include her husband of the home, Brian Chestnut; her father and stepmother, Michael and Cheryl Jantz of Arkansas City; her mother Julie Brosemer Jantz and fiancé Troy Moore of Florence; brother Tyler and Lindsey Jantz and nephew James Jantz, all of Marion; step-sister, Jennifer and Drue Ferry and niece Brynn Ferry, all of Wichita; grandmother, Helen Jantz of Marion; father- and mother-in-law, Lynn and Mary Chestnut; grandparents-in-law, Clarence and Leona Chestnut; brother-in-law, James and Cynthia Chestnut of Great Bend; beloved pets, Molly, Abby, Pepper, T.J. and Zipper.

Cloyde O. Laughlin 1917-2004
Cloyde O. Laughlin, 86, of Great Bend, died Oct. 1 at his residence. He was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Kirk, Colo., the son of Cloyde Earl and Berniece Porter Laughlin. He married
Lavella M. Kramer Jan. 29, 1949, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1949, he was a carpenter for Harper Builders, retiring in 1982.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Patria Johnson of Great Bend and Susan Gray of Radium; one sister, Marjorie Scott of Mountain Home, Ark.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Laughlin and Harold Laughlin; and two sisters, Marie Baker and Dorothy Harrison.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Golden Belt cemetery in Great Bend, with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Alvin G. Johnson 1929-2004
MACKSVILLE — Alvin G. Johnson, 75, died Sept. 30 at Leisure Homestead of St. John. He was born Jan. 10, 1929, at Hopewell, the son of Henry and Bertha Woods Johnson. He attended schools at Clear Creek, Pratt and St. John’s Military in Salina. A resident of St. John, he was an electrician working in Kansas and Texas, and was a farmer and pilot.
Johnson served with the Air National Guard.
Survivors include one son, Henry Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Nancy Hall of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Johnson; two half-brothers, Robert Wood and Otis Johnson; and four half-sisters, Jane Wilson, Blanche Clinton, Lola Hardy and Gladys Stambaugh.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Farmington cemetery in Macksville, with the Rev. Elaine Lord officiating. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Leisure Homestead in St. John, in care of Minnis Chapel Inc. of St. John.

Richard M. Pettijohn 1933 - 2004
EUCHA, Okla. — Richard M. Pettijohn, 71, died Sept. 29 at his home in Lakemount Shores. He was born May 9, 1933, in Inman, the son of Murel and Cecile Alberta Swan Pettijohn. He married
Thelma Louise Lowe. He owned and operated Dick’s Barber Shop in Great Bend for 40 years before retiring in 1994 and was associated with the Wichita Eagle Beacon for 20 years.
He was a member of First Church of God and later a member of Four Square Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Mark Pettijohn, Phillip Pettijohn and John Sutton; three daughters, Sue Joiner, Becky Ramirez and Barbara Palmer; two brothers, Charles Miller and Jim Pettijohn; two sisters, Lillian Walters and Erma Carmichael; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Pettijohn and Darrell Pettijohn; and one sister, Elsie Ferreria.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Worley-Luginbuel Chapel in Jay, Okla., and at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at Golden Belt cemetery in Great Bend.

HOLCOMB — Mary E. Patterson, 64, died Sept. 27 at her home in Holcomb. She was born Jan. 24, 1940, in Moore, Okla., the daughter of Charles and Alta Steffans Gibbons. She attended school in Pratt. She married
DeVon E. Patterson Jr. on Feb. 9, 1955, at Alva, Okla. She had lived in various places in Oklahoma and Kansas and moved to Holcomb in 1998.
She was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three sons, David Patterson and DeWayne Patterson, both of Great Bend, and DeVon Patterson of Holcomb; one brother, Wayne Steffans of Burlington; two sisters, Carolyn Owens of Langley, Okla., and Wanda Boone of Ocala, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with the Rev. Jon Becker officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. BELOIT — Jeanne E. Halfhide, 58, died Aug. 19 at her home in Beloit. She was born April 4, 1946, at Wichita. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, William H. Halfhide, McPherson; two daughters, Carrie J. Nelson and Sarah E. Halfhide, both of McPherson; brother Randy Oeser of Claflin; half-sister Mary Lynn Gould of Eureka; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Halfhide, in 1995.

ULYSSES — Edith Mae Taylor, 63, died Aug. 22 at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses. She was born May 25, 1941, at Aurora, Mo., the daughter of Timothy and Velma Ward Merritt. A homemaker, she married
Malcolm A. Taylor on July 21, 1960, at Dodge City. She moved to Ulysses from Missouri.
Survivors include her husband of Ulysses; one son, Timothy Taylor, Ulysses; three daughters, Patricia Ackley and Delana Kinslow, both of Ulysses, and Denell Conway, Great Bend; one brother, Richard Merritt, Ontario, Calf.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Peggy Conway.
