John G. McConnaughhay 1926-2004
LARNED — John G. McConnaughhay, 78, died Oct. 16, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born March 23, 1926, in Pawnee County, the son of S. G. and Faye Nelson McConnaughhay. He married
June M. Gilbert July 31, 1954, at Pawnee Rock. A lifetime Pawnee County resident, he was a retired teacher for over 40 years for Fort Larned USD 495 and was a farmer.
McConnaughhay was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ft. Larned Lions Club, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and past member of the Masonic Lodge, all of Larned. He was an Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Johnny McConnaughhay of Hastings, Neb., four daughters, Jayne Rucker of Burdett, Janet Norman of Adel, Iowa, Judy Sneath of Ellsworth, and Jill Milhon of Larned; one brother, David McConnaughhay of Kechi; three sisters, Leona Figgs of Sabetha, Bonnie D’Angelo of Topeka and Nancy Branstetter of St. James, Mo., and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert McConnaughhay.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Larned, with the Rev. Tim Ault-Duel officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery, with military graveside rights performed by Ft. Riley. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Educational Fund in Larned, in care of the funeral home.

W.B. “Jack” Cundiff 1910-2004
HOLYROOD — W.B. “Jack” Cundiff, 93, died Oct. 15 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Dec. 24, 1910, in Oklahoma, the son of Frank and Bessie Hartman Cundiff. He married
Gertrude Siemsen on Oct. 8, 1947, at Reno, Nev. He delivered furniture for Brueners Furniture in Oakland, Calif., for 20 years. He was a Holyrood resident since 1988, moving from Orinda, Calif.
Cundiff was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and American Legion Post 200, both of Holyrood.
Survivors include his wife and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery, Holyrood, with Pastor Deborah Rains officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Memorials are suggested to the church and the Siemsen Family Scholarship Fund.

Joann Parker 1929-2004
IUKA — Joann Parker, 75, died Oct. 14 at Friendship Manor of Pratt. She was born March 3, 1929, at Cullison, the daughter of Clarence Dale and Gertrude Ellen Rice Konkel. She married
S.D. Pat Parker on March 8, 1953, in Las Vegas, Nev. A resident of Iuka since 1967, moving from Macksville, she was a homemaker and church custodian.
Mrs. Parker was a member of Iuka United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Steve Parker, Wichita; one daughter, Diane Parker, Hutchinson; four brothers, Fay Konkel, Glendale, Calif., Eddie E. Konkel, Pratt, Frank D. Konkel, Pratt, and Wayne D. Konkel, Pratt; two sisters, Mabel Baker, Pratt, and Marthena DeGarmo, Elmwood, Neb.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Konkel and Johnnie Konkel, and three sisters, Gertrude Konkel, Margaret Davis and Marcheta Monaghan.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Billy Hughes and the Rev. Ken Keeling officiating. Burial will be at Iuka Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association in care of the mortuary.

Lucille Barbara Schneider 1916-2004
ELLINWOOD — Lucille Barbara Schneider, 88, died Oct. 14 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born April 29, 1916, at Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Helen Kienast Johnson. She was a 1933 graduate of East High School, and 1940 graduate of Morningside College, both of Sioux City. She married
Eugene Schneider on Jan. 1, 1946, at Sioux City. He died July 29, 1998. A longtime resident of Ellinwood, she was a retired teacher, piano teacher — Central Kansas Piano Teachers League, organist and accompanist. Schneider was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran’s Women Missionary League, and Twentieth Century Club, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Craig Paul Schneider of Great Bend; one daughter, Gwen Glidden of Augusta, Ga.; one sister, Loretta Lenz of Sioux City; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Merlyn Lorhke officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Albert G. ‘Al’ Bachman 1925-2004
CLAFLIN — Albert G. “Al” Bachman, 79, died Oct. 13 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 11, 1925, at Lead, S.D., the son of Leo and Adeline Curtis Bachman. He graduated from Live Oak High School, in Live Oak, Calif., Yuba College and Sacramento College and received a master’s degree in school administration from Wichita State University and a master’s of natural science from Arizona State University. He married
Peggy Maxine Churchman on Oct. 23, 1945, at Parkerville. A resident of Claflin since 1969, coming from Hutchinson, he taught school in California, Hutchinson and was a college professor for 18 years at Barton County Community College of Great Bend.
Bachman was a life member of National Education Association. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Albert Bruce Bachman of Hutchinson, Thomas G. Bachman of Lakin and Daniel L. Bachman of Susank; one daughter, Barbara F. Underwood of Tribune; one brother, Leo R. Bachman of Woodland, Calif.; three sisters, Blanche Gillespie of Live Oak, Hazel Chapman of Marysville, Calif., and Darlene Herring of Trout Lake, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Conrad Bachman; two half-brothers, Jacob Bachman and LeRoy Bachman; one sister, Dorothy Bachman; and two half-sisters, Myrtle Main and Alice Hullinger.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Mike Underwood officiating with assistance by Mrs. Peggy Bachman. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Parkerville cemetery in Parkerville, with military rites by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. MEDICINE LODGE — Dan Heinrich, 77, died Oct. 12 at Great Bend. He was born July 31, 1927, in Swissville, Pa., the son of Louis and Irene Nagy Heinrich. He married
Elsie Willan Dec. 9, 1963, in Las Vegas, Nev. A resident of La Crosse, coming from Seward, he was retired.
Heinrich was a member of the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of La Crosse; one step-daughter, Laura Johnson of Medicine Lodge; five step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at 9 a.m. today at Highland cemetery in Medicine Lodge. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church of Medicine Lodge, in care of the funeral home.

Shirley Turner
WHITTIER, Calif. — Shirley Smith Turner, 69, of Whittier, Calif., passed away Oct. 9, 2004, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier. She was born in Great Bend, the daughter of Ray and Edna Smith of Heizer.
She attended school in Hoisington and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1953. She married
Vince Turner July 1954, and moved to California where she worked for the U.S. Post Office.
Survivors include her husband; daughter, Dianne Naso of Whittier; two sons, Randy Turner of Whittier and Brad Turner of Idaho; four grandchildren; two brothers, John Smith and Gene Smith, both of Great Bend; three sisters, Carolyn Schulz of Pine Village, Ore., Delfreda Bateman of Hutchinson and Maxine Wilborn of Hoisington.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be given to the Cancer Fund.

Cheryl L. Tammen 1935-2004
GREENFIELD, Ind. — Cheryl L. (Foos) Tammen, age 69, of Greenfield, Ind., died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at her home in Greenfield. Born on Jan. 21, 1935, in Great Bend, Kan., she was the daughter of William H. and Melda W. (Wright) Foos. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1953 and received a nursing degree from the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend in 1955.
She married
M. Gene Tammen on Oct. 7, 1956. Mrs. Tammen was a Registered Nurse for 35 years. She worked at Hancock Memorial Hospital for 20 years of her career, retiring as the surgery supervisor in 1990.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband in their motor home for the past nine years.
Surviving her are her husband, M. Gene Tammen, of Greenfield; sons, Craig A. Tammen and J.D. Tammen, both of Greenfield; and four grandchildren, Michael J., Ryan C., Kevin W., and Kelsi D. Tammen, all of Greenfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Melda Foos.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Erlewein Mortuaries in Greenfield. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Darrel Hudson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Patty Cook, 426 Hamilton Street, Fortville, IN 46040.

Goldie Lee Gardner 1911-2004
Goldie Lee Gardner, age 93, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend.
Goldie Lee Gardner was born Sept. 7, 1911, between Skiatook and Sperry, Okla. She was the first child of Fred and Letha Kehler. While growing up, Goldie helped at her home and held jobs at the Barret Hotel and Walters Cafe. She graduated from Skiatook High School in 1930. She fell in love with Ted T. Gardner of Skiatook and they were married
on Apr. 2, 1934, in Pryor, Okla. The newlyweds pipelined for a number of years. Upon their return to Skiatook, Goldie worked for C & R Grocery and later went to work for the Tulsa County Treasurer, Clyde Winterwinger. Goldie retired after 20 years of service to Tulsa County. Goldie gave birth on Apr. 17, 1943, to the couple’s only child, Teddy Taft Gardner II.
Goldie was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Letha, her husband, Ted, as well as sisters Doris Hardesty, Dorothy Kehler, Mae Young, Opal Kehler and Marie Cartright. She is survived by brothers Fred Kehler Jr. of Foyil, Okla. and Bob Kehler of Skiatook, Okla., son, Ted Gardner and his wife Pauline of Great Bend. She is survived by three grandsons, Allan and Vicki Gardner of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Ryan and Nicole Gardner of Great Bend, and Scott and Patricia Blackwell of Tecumsch, Mo., five great-grandchildren, Taylor Gardner, Drexler Gardner, Mikayla, Ladmeier and Jebadiah Blackwell.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Sien-Shelton Funeral Home Chapel in Skiatook. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the building fund for the new Skiatook Christian Church.

Helen L. Urban 1916-2004
HUTCHINSON — Helen L. Urban, 88, died Oct. 11 at the Hospice House. She was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Charles and Theresa Werner Schich. She married
Jerome E. Urban on June 12, 1939, at Waterloo. He died July 1, 1991. A Hutchinson resident since 1974, moving from Pfeifer, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Urban was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Hutchinson, and St. Teresa’s Altar Society.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Urban of Victoria; two daughters, Darlene Schumacher and Geri Rome, both of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Parish Rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Stuart M. Smeltzer officiating. Burial will be at Fairlawn cemetery in Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.
