Thomas B. Lynch 1926-2004
Thomas B. Lynch, 78, of Great Bend, died May 9 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born April 26, 1926, at Conception, Mo., the son of James C. and Iola V. Bauman Lynch. He married
Betty Middleton May 1, 1950, at Anchorage, Alaska. A resident of Great Bend since 1965, coming from Derby, he was a maintenance manager for Kansas Refined Helium Co. of Otis, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Blue Army, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 3111 and American Legion Post No. 180, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II with the 12th Cavalry.
Survivors include his wife Betty of the home; two sons, Thomas B. Lynch Jr. and wife Merrilee of Wichita, and Michael D. Lynch and wife Kathy of Medicine Lodge; four daughters, Sheryl A. Lynch, Christina M. Talbert and husband Larry, all of Great Bend, Mary K. Lynch of Oak Grove, Mo., and Elizabeth T. Lynch of Stillwater, Okla.; one brother, Julius Lynch of Arlington, Vt.; two sisters, Catherine Timmerman of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Wilma J. Hanna of Savannah, Mo.; five grandchildren, Christopher Lynch and wife Casey, Michael Lynch Jr., Karen Lynch, Mark Lynch and James Lynch; and one great-granddaughter, Madyson Lynch. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Jean Lynch, and seven brothers and sisters.
Vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home, followed by Knights of Columbus Rosary. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columbia cemetery in Conception with military honors conducted by Ft. Leavenworth Honor Guard. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Otto H. Niedens 1918-2004
HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — Otto H. Niedens, 85, died May 7 at Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, Mo. He was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Hodgeman County, the son of Henry J. and Bertha Bitter Niedens. He married
Rosie Boxberger Dec. 12, 1945, at Susank. A longtime resident of Hoisington, he was a retired mechanic for Spears-Lehning Buick in Hoisington for 18 years and for Dove Buick, Olds and Cadillac in Great Bend for 20 years.
Niedens was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428 and American Legion Post 286, all of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gerald Niedens and his wife, Cynthia, of Harrisonville, Mo., and Doyle Niedens and his wife, Sandy, of Macon Ga.; one brother, Albert Niedens of Great Bend; three sisters, Leona Karst of Great Bend, Viola Dumler of Milberger and Lola Wilks of Rose Hill; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Niedens of Columbia, Mo., Jeffrey Niedens of Peoria, Ill., and Jay Allen of Independence, Mo. He was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Niedens.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington, with Pastor Garry Dassow officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Tabea ‘Tabetha’ Karst 1907-2004
HOISINGTON — Tabea “Tabetha” Karst, 96, died May 9 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. She was born Oct. 28, 1907, in rural Milberger, the daughter of Reinhart and Anna Nuss Steinert. She married
Herman Karst Nov. 6, 1927, at Milberger. He died Oct. 2, 2000. Living on the farm in rural Galatia for 61 years, moving to Great Bend in 1988 and to Hoisington in 2000, she was a farm wife and homemaker.
Mrs. Karst was a member of United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger. She was baptized Nov. 24, 1907, and confirmed April 9, 1922, both at Milberger.
Survivors include two sons, Herman L. and wife Joyce Karst of Casper, Wyo., and Wayne and wife Karen Karst of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Nadine and husband Vernon Deutsch of Hoisington; one son-in-law, Lawrence Cuthrell of Great Bend; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Christabelle Cuthrell; one brother, Marvin R. Steinert; three sisters, Caroline Wasemiller, Rachel Karst and Esther M. Popp; and one granddaughter.
Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, with the Rev. Keith Kreitzer officiating. Burial will be at Milberger cemetery in Milberger. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home, and from 12:30 p.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. Darrell F. ‘D.F.’ Huffman 1924-2004
LYONS — Darrell F. “D.F.” Huffman, 80, died May 8 at Good Samaritan Center in Lyons. He was born Feb. 12, 1924, at Grant County, Okla., the son of Jerry Frank and Mildred Lamphere Huffman. He was the 1941 valedictorian of South Haven High School. He married
Betty J. Kirk in 1949. He married
LaVerna Schultz Schumacher Dec. 30, 1976, in Russell. A resident of Lyons since 1947, coming from South Haven, he was an aerial crop duster for 51 years in Rice and surrounding counties.
Huffman was a member of Community Presbyterian Church of Chase, Environmental Protection Agency, AOPA, and Federal Aeronautical Agency. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving as a lieutenant.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, David Huffman of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two daughters, Debra Ann Laessig of McKinney, Texas, and Vickie Jean Folck of Lyons; two stepdaughters, Lisa Ann Bruns of Bemidji, Minn., and Karla Greer Schumacher of Wichita; one sister, Eloise Neahring of Enid, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Chase with the Revs. Jesse and Arlene Patrick and Cindy Watson officiating. Military graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Springcreek cemetery in Deer Creek, Okla. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Marjorie Agnes Simonson Polson 1917-2004
Marjorie Agnes Simonson Polson, 86, of Great Bend, passed away May 6 at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, Neb. She was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Irene, S.D., the daughter of Oscar and Caroline Running Simonson. She graduated from Irene High School and from the Bethany School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kan., where she met and later married
Robert C. Polson. She worked at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. and entered the army in 1944 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She took basic training at Fort Lewis Washington and was stationed in Santa Barbara, Calif. There she married
Robert C. Polson on Sept. 15, 1945. They moved to Great Bend in 1947 from Kansas City when Dr. Polson started his ophthalmology practice.
Her husband, Robert C. Polson, died Dec. 26, 1992. Survivors include one son, David S. and his wife Jane Polson of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Nancy L. and her husband Dr. Perry Schuetz of Great Bend, and Annie M. Westfall of Plano, Texas; one brother, Alan Simonson of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Carmen Bossuyt of Sumner, Wash.; and six grandchildren, Amy Hurley and husband Geoff of San Diego, Calif.; Wendy Polson of Kansas City, Mo.; Andy Johnson of Dallas, Texas; Jennifer Polson of Overland Park; John Schuetz of Great Bend and Alex Johnson of Dallas. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Orvald Simonson and Kenneth Simonson.
Marge was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a dear friend. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Athenian Club, “Golden Girl” in PEO Chapter FS, Bloomer Girls, Bridge Club, Community volunteer in Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, and Blood Mobile, all of Great Bend.
The service to celebrate Marge’s life will be at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend on Friday, May 14, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Diana Coberly officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend.

Oneida Coleman Bell 1920-2004
There Has Been a New Arrival in Heaven! Oneida Bell, 83, left this earth on Friday to join her husband, True Balus Bell.
She was born June 6, 1920, at Dalhart, Texas, the daughter of James Alexander and Ella Fair Riddle Coleman.
As a loving wife and mother she followed True’s work making homes in Paris, Ark.; Alemeda, Calif.; Superior, Wyo.; and Great Bend, where True worked the Kansas oilfields. Her last years were spent in Hutchinson, Kan., with her daughter, Francis Everson.
She was a member of Colonial Heights Assembly of God in Wichita, Kan., where she served as a Sunday school teacher, newsletter volunteer and sang in the choir.
She married
True Balus Bell on Jan. 14, 1939. He preceded her in death in November of 1979. From their union three children were born: Francis Ann Everson, Hutchinson; James Ray Bell, Hutchinson; and Steven Wayne Bell, Fort Scott, Kan. Three daughters-in-law also survives her: Mary Lackrone Bell, Sharon McLaughlin and Paula Keene; 10 grandchildren: David Glen Everson, Michael Scott Bell, Christopher John Everson, Melissa Lynn Bell, Rebekah Hope Enke; Daniel John Bell, John Mark Bell, Stephen Josiah David Bell, Michelle Moore and Brian Messmer. Seven great-grandchildren: Timothy Everson, Larry Mendoza, Darin Tru Bell, Kari Andrene Everson, Amber Moore, Sara Moore and Alexis Messmer.
Oldest of 14 children, Harold Ray Coleman, Clynelle Gamble, Emogene Cox, Arthur Paul Coleman, Charles Ralph Coleman, Jerry Jack Coleman, Donald Bruce Coleman, Judy Sue Alexander, Joe Russell Coleman, and Sammy Lou Campbell survive her.
She was preceded in death by her brother, James Carl Coleman; and infant brother, Troy; and baby sister, Nancy Ruth.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 11 at the Resthaven Mortuary Chapel in Wichita. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Resthaven.
In appreciation of their services, Memorials may be sent to Reno County Hospice in care of the mortuary or Colonial Heights Assembly of God of Wichita.

Alvena Elaine “Red” Carpenter, 81, died May 7 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Radium, the daughter of Earl and Jesse Ballinger Carr. She married
Arnold Carpenter April 23, 1947, in South Berwick, Maine. A longtime resident of Otis, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Otis United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Chuck Carpenter of Great Bend and Curt Carpenter of Olathe; one daughter, Carol Schmidt of Salina; two sisters, Beulah Vratil and Maxine Heueisen, both of Great Bend; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Parker, Earl and Clair Carr.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Interment will be at Otis Methodist Cemetery.
