Golda E. Webber
Funeral services for Golda E. Webber, 89, resident of Kaw City, who died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center, were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at the First Christian Church of Kaw City. Rev. Ronald H. Eldridge, pastor, officiated. Interment was in the Grandview Cemetery. Born July 10, 1914, in Kinta in the Kiamichee Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Bill and Posie (Carson) Oaks. Survivors include her two daughters, Jo Adell Keeler and Donna Lee Corlett of Kaw City, Okla., one daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Jesse Webber, Vern Richardson and Homer Webber; and sons, Haskell and Jerry.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Kaw City, P.O. Box 20, Kaw City, Okla. 74641. Arrangements are under the direction of the Grace Memorial Chapel, Ponca City.
Kenton Dwayne Engleking
Kenton Dwayne Engleking, 59, longtime Newkirk resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2004, at his home in Newkirk. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004,at the First Christian Church of Newkirk with Rev. Robert Ferris officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. The casket will not be open for viewing at any time. Born May 14, 1944, in Ponca City, he was the son of George H. and Dorothy M. (Law) Engelking. He grew up in Newkirk where he received his education, and he graduated from Newkirk High School with the class of 1962. Following graduation Kenton enlisted in the United States Navy as an aviation mechanic. He served aboard the USS Hancock in Hawaii from 1964-1968. After receiving an honorable discharge he began working for Cessna as a mechanic. Later he worked for Glenn Peel and then was employed by City Service. He ended his working career with the Williams Petroleum Company and retired in 1987. Kenton was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and the Newkirk Golf Association. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Engelking of Newkirk; one brother, Gary Engelking of Ponca City; three sisters, Sharon Waner of Guthrie, Okla., Janice Logsdon and Maryln Springer, both of Newkirk; three nephews and seven nieces; four great-nephews and four great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, and his grandparents, Herman and Sophia Engelking, Dewey Law and Alta (Goodno) Wilson. Those serving as casket bearers will be Mark Engelking, Curtis Ford, Mike Leaming, Ernest Engelking, Frank Engelking and Rae Engelking. Honorary bearers are Jim Patterson, Roger Bowser, Allan Ware, Bill Weber, Larry Seagraves, Larry Goodno, and the members of the Newkirk Golf Association.
A memorial fund has been established with the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made in lieu of flowers through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.
Earl William Hutchinson
Earl William Hutchinson, 79, Arkansas City died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Pastor Buddy Cook and Jesse Kindred will officiate. Cremation will follow. Born June 25, 1924, in Chandler, Okla., he was the son of Issac and Eliza Ellen (Johnson) Newton. He moved to Arkansas City from Chandler in the early 30's with his family and attended Arkansas City schools. Earl served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater. On October 8, 1945, he married Ella L. Sparks in Arkansas City where the couple has made their home since. Earl was a self employed mechanic, servicing VWs for many people. He was a member of the American Legion and affiliated with the First Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include his wife, Ella Hutchinson of the home; three sons, Raymond Hutchinson and his wife, Julie, Kenny Hutchinson and Michael Hutchinson and his wife, Kimberly, all of Arkansas City; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and great-granddaughter, Lisa Marie Kidd.

Wallace Monroe Lowery
Funeral services for Wallace Monroe Lowery, 81, Arkansas City, who died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lance Carrithers officiating. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Military honors were by Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW, Arkansas City with Commander Clyde H. Hatcher and Chaplain Alyce M. Harris. Color guards were Bob Baughman and Jimmy Simpson. Color bearers were Michael B. Holland and Gary Davis. Firing squad with Commander Gilbert Mills was Joe E. Harris, Leslie R. Block, Darrell Rolland, and Keith Crain. Bugler was Gilbert Mills.

William H. "Bill" Bergdall
William H. "Bill" Bergdall, 86, Winfield, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at William Newton Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at the Tisdale Methodist Church. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet friends from 6-7 p.m. Born April 3, 1921, in Meno, Okla., he was the son of Henry Ray and Maggie (Swartz) Bergdall. He worked at Jarvis Auto Supply as a salesman and later sales manager, where he worked until 1985, following 38 years of service. Survivors include his children, Brenton Bergdall, of Lenexa, Beverly Johnson, Winfield, Randy Bergdall, Redding, Calif., and Bonnie Unruh, Olathe; six grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Sympson, Winfield, and Nancy Bowman, Liberal; three stepgrandsons; six great-granchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Montra May (Roberts) Bergdall; and a sister, Sarah Jo Sympson.

Eugene Joe Vogele
Eugene Joe Vogele, 92, of Shidler, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at his son's residence in Shidler. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at the Webb City Church of God. The Rev. Charles Richey will officiate. Interment will follow in the Foraker Cemetery. The casket will be open at the church in Webb City, from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday. Eugene was born May 20, 1915, in Webb City, Okla., to Gus and Maggie (Webb) Vogele. He was reared and educated in Webb City. He attended Oklahoma State A&M College in Stillwater. He married Ruby Laura Brown on Oct. 10, 1938, in Stillwater. The couple made their home in rural Shidler, Okla. He was a farmer, but also took time to work for his son, working pipeline and taking up old railroad track. Eugene was a lifelong member of the Webb City Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Ruby of the home; five sons, Bobby and his wife, Cinthia Vogele, of Shidler, Joe and his wife, Linda Vogele, of Shidler, Justin and his wife, Judy Vogele, of Maple City, Austin and his wife, Teri, of Ponca City, Jackie and his, wife, Debbie, of Arkansas City; daughter, Janice Poulter, of Shidler; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Horace, Donnie and Bill; two sisters, Anna and Claira.

Francis Merryman "John" Dugan
Francis Merryman "John" Dugan, 71, longtime Newkirk resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Roberts officiating. Interment will take place later in the Newkirk Cemetery. The casket will be open the day of the service only. He was born Dec. 28, 1936, in Wellington, Kan., the son of John William and Elsie Ethel (Cornwall) Dugan. He had owned and operated a paint and body shop in Wellington until 1970. John was employed as a machinist for Micro Plastec in Flippin, Ark., from 1987 until 1994 when he retired. He then was employed at the Newkirk Nursing Center. Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret (Free) Dugan; three sons, John Daren, of Wellington, William R. Free, of Pampa, Texas, and John W. Palmer, of Washington state; one daughter, Rhonda Richards, of Miami, Okla.; a brother, Ronald Dugan, of Newton, Kan.; two sisters, Rosland Roth, of Snohomish, Wash. and Rositta, of Santa Monica, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard Dugan and Marvan Capps; and one sister, Ritas Thomas.

Shirley S. Brewer Bruner
Shirley S. Brewer Bruner, 72 of Geuda Springs died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 2, 2009 at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
Chapel. The Reverend Steve Chambers will officiate. Shirley was born March 19, 1936 to Harry Albert Simpson and Lura Dee (Nichols) in Arkansas City. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954 and later Arkansas City Junior College. Shirley worked for Southwestern Bell as an operator and later for Brown and Root Construction Company as a secretary. Her job with Brown and Root took her many places including San Francisco and Dallas. Shirley worked at the Denver Mint and other governmental agencies in the Denver area. Shirley married Robert Green in the couple had three daughters, Teresa, Tammy and Monica. She married Les Bruner and later Bud Bruner in December 2003. The couple married in Miami, OK and made their home in Geuda Springs. She is survived by her husband, Bud Brewer of the home; daughters, Tammy Campbell and husband, Steve of Ft. Collins, CO, Teresa Olsen and husband, Terry of Aurora, Co; two sisters, Nancy Woods and husband, Fred of Arkansas City, Vera Edershein of Auburn, NY and six grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Monica Green and brother, Gerald Simpson.

Carolyn A. Smith
Carolyn A. Smith, 77, of Oxford, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at her daughter's home in Oxford.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Oxford Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Danny Ginn officiating.
Carolyn was born on Dec. 26, 1931, in Winfield, the daughter of Clarence R. and Violet Mears. She worked at the state hospital and at Benny and Smith in Winfield. She also worked at the Bagot's Drug Store in Oxford.
Survivors include her daughters, Treva Doree Smith, of Oxford, and Vanessa Gardner, of Winfield; sister, Juanita Samples, of Oxford; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dalton Smith; and sister, Doris Faye Cole.
A memorial has been established with the Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Helen Utsler
Helen Utsler, 90, Newkirk resident and formerly of Arkansas City, died early Monday morning, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Ponca City Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held at 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
with Danny W. Cornish officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home until 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Helen Maxine Utsler was born Dec. 4, 1918, on the family farm near Arkansas City, the daughter of Lee Calvern and Vera L. (Arrnett) Shurtz. She worked for the Rodeo Meat Packing Plant in Arkansas City until her retirement in 1981.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie Stout, of Newkirk; one sister, Mildred Riley, of Arkansas City; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, William Thomas Utsler III, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one grandson.
A memorial fund has been established with the Salvation Army. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.

Angela Gene Watson
Angela Gene Watson, 35, of Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the St. James Church of God In Christ, 611 N. Sixth St., Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. The casket will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Angela was born Feb. 17, 1973, in Arkansas City, to Virgil E. Watson Jr. and Jacqueline Sue (Elston) Watson. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1991. She attended Cowley College and Independence Community College and was scheduled to graduate from Southwestern College of Winfield this May. Angela worked as an aide for Arkansas City Head Start and was currently employed as an English as a second language instructor for USD 470. Angela loved teaching children and she implemented Jackie's Jewels Dance Studio (1999-2004), she continued her love of children by working for USD 470. She was a lifelong member of the St. James Church of God in Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Monet, of the home; father, Virgil, of Arkansas City; brother, Virgil E. Watson III, "Trey," of Arkansas City; two sisters, Camela Watson, of Arkansas City, Shawna and her husband, Alvin Riley, of Kansas City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.

Edward Lee Duncan
Edward Lee Duncan died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Gardnerville, Nev. A memorial and Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the Carson Valley Christian Center, 1095 Stephanie Way, Minden, Nev., for family and friends. Lee was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Edward F. and Betty Mae (Lawton) Duncan. Upon graduation from high school in Arkansas City, Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. His senior year Lee was appointed KSU Air Force ROTC Cadet Wing Commander of 1200 cadets. Upon graduation from KSU, Lee was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served four years active duty as a weapons controller and a radar inputs countermeasures officer in the U.S. Air Force. Upon completion of his enlistment, Lee continued in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as an admission liaison officer to the U.S. Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC commissioning programs. Before his retirement from active reserve status in 1988 with the rank of major and two Air Force commendation medals, Lee was selected as one of five outstanding USAF Academy Admission Liaison Officers in the United States. In 1964, Lee married Cheryl Ann Sherrod in Arkansas City, Kan. They have a daughter, Cheri, of Dayton, Nev., and a son, Scot of Minden, Nev. Beginning in 1970, Lee worked as a commercial casualty underwriter with specialization in reinsurance, surplus lines and alternative risk transfer for insurance companies in Connecticut, Missouri, Illinois, and California. He was managing general underwriter and program manager for a general agency co-founded in Southern California before founding Innovative Insurance Solutions, Inc. in Minden, Nev., in 1994 as CEO, president and chief underwriting officer. Lee was an active member of the Carson Valley Lions Club since 1995 where he served terms as treasurer, president, lion tamer and director, and he received Lion of the Year awards in 2001 and 2007. He also was a trustee of the Advisory Council of the Lions Eye Foundation of California-Nevada, and served as Zone 1-C chairman for Lions District 46. Lee received the Abdul Award from the Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence and is a Harry J. Aslan Fellow of the District 4 Student Speakers Foundation. Survivors include his wife; son; daughter; grandchildren, Ashlee, Taylor and Nanami; and, twin brother, F. Dee Duncan, of Highlands Ranch, Colo. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Denise Duncan.
Memorial gifts in remembrance of E. Lee Duncan may be given either to the Carson Valley Lions Club, Minden, Nev., or to the Arkansas City Lions Club for the Ed Duncan Lions Park Fund, Arkansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of Capital City Cremation and Burial, Carson City, Nev.
Carmen Masterson
Carmen Masterson, 93, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, in Winfield. She was born Oct. 9, 1915, near Yellville, Ark., to Jeff and Rusha Davis Pulliam. At an early age the family moved to McClain County, Okla., where she spent most of her life. She attended school at Johnson and Washington where she graduated. In December of 1933, she married Ralph Masterson. They resided on a farm in the Johnson Community for many years until moving to Purcell in 1960. She was employed at McCurdy Memorial Hospital until the Purcell Municipal Hospital was established in 1970. She retired from there in October of 1982. After retiring, she was a volunteer at the hospital for many years. Carmen was an active member of Heartland Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons and wives, Nathan and Romana Masterson, of Arkansas City, Jerrald and Karen Masterson, of Purcell, Okla.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Carmen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph in 1976; five sisters; and a brother.

Lawrence Morris
Lawrence Morris, 81, of Reeds, Mo., formerly of Oxford, died Saturday, Jan. 24, in Reeds, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at the Oxford Christian Church, with the Rev. Danny Ginn officiating. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. Lawrence G. Morris was born April 12, 1927, in Oxford, to William Sims and Masie Edna Cone Morris. Survivors include children, Allen Lee, Wichita, Gerald Roy, Gainesville, Fla., Katharine Aileen, Claremore, Okla., Michael Warren, Smyrna, Tenn., Judy Gale, Mineral Bluff, Ga., and Connie Lorraine, Jackson, Ga.; brother, Lloyd Morris, Winfield; sister, Juanita Hall, Stover, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two half brothers, Jay, Paul, Kenneth, Wayne, Ashley, Gerald and Victor.
