Harry Corneal "Bud" Peetoom
Harry Corneal "Bud" Peetoom, 86, of Arkansas City, died Saturday evening Jan. 10, 2009, at the Presbyterian Manor in Ark City, at the age of 86 years. Services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, in the Braman Cemetery. The Rev. Frank Tepe, of Christ's Church in Blackwell, Okla, will officiate. Harry Corneal "Bud" Peetoom was born on Aug. 13, 1922, in Catesby, Okla. He was the son of George and Alice (Hamilton) Peetoom. He worked in the oilfields and traveled throughout different states. Survivors include his wife, Velma Franks Collins Peetoom, of Ark City; one son, Gary Peetoom of Attica, Kan.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl J. Peetoom, of Ark City. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis Peetoom; one daughter, Norma Jean Peetoom; his first wife Dortha Peetoom Howard; one brother, Gilbert Peetoom; and one sister, Billie Thurman.

Verne Howard Woner
Verne Howard Woner, 83, of Rock, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Internment will be held at the Highland Cemetery
in Winfield. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, at Swisher-Taylor and Morris Funeral Home. The family will greet from 6-7 p.m. Verne was born in Winfield on June 16, 1925, to George Leland Woner and Edna (Vincent) Woner. He was a lifelong farmer. He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Casey; brother and sister-in-law, Martin D. and Lorice Ann Woner, of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Patrice I. Dobbins.

Mary Mae Crouse
Mary Mae Crouse slipped peacefully away on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, in Sacramento, Calif. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, in Folsom, Calif. Mary and her husband will be inurned at Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery
in Folsom. Born May 2, 1926 in Arkansas City, she was the daughter of Milton and Ethel Loyd. She is survived by her loving children, Larry Dorman and wife, Sandy, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Linda (Dorman) Martinez and husband, Antonio Martinez, of Rancho Cordova, Calif; sister, Barbara Martin, of Claremore, Okla., who is the lone survivor of the Loyd family brothers and sisters; sister-in-law, Mary Loyd and brother-in-law, Ted Jones, of Arkansas City; four sisters-in-law, Betty Crouse, of Derby, Jerry Crouse, of Arkansas City, Jean Crouse, of Texas, and Nelda Crouse, of Winfield. Her passing will be mourned by five loving grandchildren, Gregory (Sandy) Dorman, in Texas, Shari (Troy) Warr, in Folsom, Calif., Robert (Cheri) Engelke, in Las Vegas, Nev., Tracy (Rickee) Dorman, of Parker, Colo., and Susan Engelke, in Las Vegas, Nev. Her 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren will miss her so much. She leaves a legacy of kindness, caring, and family involvement as an example to us all. She has many nieces and nephews scattered everywhere. She was a treasure to them all and loved them dearly. Thank you to all of you who called her and visited her over the years. It meant everything to her. A special thanks to Justine Tomsche, of Arkansas City, for her devotion to her aunt and the many trips she made to visit her over the years. Also to her sister, Bobbie, who made a yearly visit to keep in touch with her sister. Forrest (Bob) and Mary moved extensively over their 45 years together, leaving behind a trail of wonderful memories and many friends who will miss them very much. Last, but not least, a very special thank you to the wonderful family of Antonio Martinez in California. They adopted her into their family and showered her with so much love, laughter and joy over the past four years. There are not enough words to express how much she loved all her family and friends. We will all miss her so much. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Forrest (Bob) W. Crouse; her parents; her brothers and sisters, Evelyn Sheldon, Georgia Bills, Lucille Jones, Jack Loyd, Bill Loyd, and Pat Bebout; and one tiny granddaughter, Alaina Engelke. Mary requested no flowers.

Jacquie Sue Zimmerman
Jacquie Sue Zimmerman, 59, of Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, in the Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Slaughter will officiate. Cremation has been effected. Jacquie was born April 16, 1949, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Floyd and Eleanor (Porter) Brown. She was reared and educated in Bakersfield. She met Larry Zimmerman in Bakersfield and the two were married Dec. 9, 1988, in Laughlin, Nev. The couple returned to Arkansas City where Jacquie worked as a waitress for Daisy Mae's and APCO East. Mom has always said, "Don't mourn my death, celebrate my life." Jacquie was a life member of the Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband Larry of the home; three daughters, Rhonda Hull, of Cleveland, Okla., Jeanette Harlander, of Odessa, Texas, Jill Harlander of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Candy Brown and Judy Hoobler, both of Montana; five grandchildren Brianna, Quinten, Justin, Patrick, and Amber; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

Ruth Anne Lyke
Ruth Anne Lyke, 91, Burden, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at the Dexter Care Center in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Cambridge Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m Friday. The family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m. that evening. Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Burden, she was one of the five children born to Ross and Hazel (Tredway) Sitton. Survivors include her son, Roger Lyke, of Cedar Vale; daughter, Karen Fouts, Costa Mesa, Calif.; sister, Marguerite Reece, Winfield; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Charles H. Lyke; her brothers, Jack, Claude and Ralph.

Eugene Joe Vogele
Eugene Joe Vogele, 92, of Shidler, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at his son's residence in Shidler. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at the Webb City Church of God. The Rev. Charles Richey will officiate. Interment will follow in the Foraker Cemetery. The casket will be open at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and at the church in Shidler from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday. Eugene was born May 20, 1915, in Webb City, Okla., to Gus and Maggie (Webb) Vogele. He was reared and educated in Webb City. He attended Oklahoma State A&M College in Stillwater. He married Ruby Laura Brown on Oct. 10, 1938, in Stillwater. The couple made their home in rural Shidler, Okla. He was a farmer, but also took time to work for his son, working pipeline and taking up old railroad track. Eugene was a lifelong member of the Webb City Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Ruby, of the home; five sons, Bobby and his wife, Cinthia Vogele, of Shidler, Joe and his wife, Linda Vogele, of Shidler, Justin and his wife, Judy Vogele, of Maple City, Austin and his wife, Teri, of Ponca City, Jackie and his wife, Debbie, of Arkansas City; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Horace, Donnie and Bill; two sisters, Anna and Claira.

Francis M. Dugan
Francis M. Dugan, 71, longtime Newkirk resident, died early this morning, Jan. 29, 2008, at his home. Survivors include his wife, Mary.

Thelma "Johnny" Kelly
Thelma "Johnny" Kelly, 77, of Caldwell, retired Corner Cafe cook, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at her daughter's home in Wellington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, in the chapel of the Day Funeral Home in Caldwell. Interment will follow in Caldwell City Cemetery, in Caldwell. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday. Thelma was born Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1930, in Grant County, Okla., the Daughter of Carl Foster and Millie (Falkenberg) Foster. On Feb. 25, 1949, Thelma married Fred Kelly in Caldwell. Fred died on March 23, 1979. Survivors include her children, Kathy Tuttle, of Wellington, Karen Singleton and her husband, Phil, of Granger, Ind., Karl Kelly, of Belle Plaine, Kay Dugan, of South Haven, Kris Kelly, of Caldwell; grandchildren, Lee Patterson, Michael Patterson, Michelle Hinkle, Taylor Kelly, Lenea Nicholson, Kari Clift, Kyle Tuttle, Kelly Brown, Krista Singleton, Sarah Pond, Tom Dugan, Tyler Dugan; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Nulik, of Arkansas City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Nadine Kelly; son-in-law, Terry Dugan; and a granddaughter, Jamie Dugan.

Jeanette Lucille Kilmer
Jeanette Lucille Kilmer, 97, longtime Newkirk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Integris Blackwell Regional Hospital. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Hollifield, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk, officiating. Jeanette Lucille Kilmer was born June 7, 1910, in Hastings, Colo., the daughter of James Dunsmure and Janet (Morris) Cameron. Her work history includes having a half interest in a hotel with her sister; she operated a rooming house and, in the same time period, owned and operated a restaurant while her daughter was young; and with her husband operated a U-Fill-It service station. She had also worked as an Avon representative, and she managed several apartment buildings. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jean Hensley, of Newkirk; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, Gordon Wilson Kilmer, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Shepard Robins, Sarah Davis, Anna Niccol and Edna Barnes; and one grandson.

Jack Turner
Jack Turner, 53, longtime Newkirk area resident, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at his home. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Christ's Church of Newkirk, with the Rev. Stephen Harshman officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon on Wednesday. Jack was born Aug. 6, 1954, in Guthrie, Okla., the son of Jack Annis and Betty Joan (Hasselbring) Turner. In Newkirk he worked as a pipe fitter. He had worked all over the country and had just finished a job in Richmond, Calif., and returned home. Survivors include his wife, Diana Pauline (Meeks) Turner; three sons, Nicholas Alan Turner, Jack Annis Turner and Max Montana Turner, all of the home; two brothers, David Turner, of Newkirk, and Rick Turner, of Wichita; one sister, Barbara Lower, of Mustang; and a number of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joseph E. Whitehead
Joseph E. Whitehead, 86, of Arkansas City, was found dead in his home on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Joe was born March 13, 1921, in Webb City, Okla., to Jep and Nora (Moore) Whitehead. He was reared and educated in Webb City, Arkansas City, and Winfield. Joe served in the United States Army during WWII as a tank driver under the command of General George Patton. He married Betty Percival on April 24, 1941, in Newkirk. The couple made their home in California, where Joe worked as a bus driver for Grey Hound Bus Lines. The couple returned to Arkansas City in 1977. He was a member of the IXL Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Shelton Beaty Post 18 American Legion. Survivors include his brother, Bill, and his wife, Laverne Whitehead, of Wichita; a half sister, Roberta Lora, of Sacramento, Calif.; one great-grandson, Joseph Hornbeck, of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; son, Wayne; a grandson; a brother, Allen Whitehead; two sisters, Jettie Mae Ellison and Wanda Mason.

Lucy M. Mora
Lucy M. Mora, 87, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Lucy was born May 12, 1920, in Mexico, to Ambrocio and Petra (Padilla) Ramirez. She moved with her family to Arkansas City, and gained U.S. citizenship. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. She married Edward Mora on Sept. 17, 1942. The couple lived in Arkansas City, all of their married lives. Lucy and Edward owned and operated the Greendoor Restaurant. Lucy was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was also a cub scout leader for the church. Survivors include a son, Michael and his wife, Cathy Mora, of Arkansas City; four sisters, Josephine Rodiguez, Mary and her husband, Miguel Contrerras, all of Arkansas City, Rita Gonzales, of Hutchinson, Frances and her husband, John Murellio, of Arkansas City; sister-in-law, Nati Ramirez, of Arkansas City; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; son, Thomas Mora; an infant daughter; a stepdaughter, Saundra Wargin; great-grandson, Spencer Mora Lord; and six brothers.

William "Bill" Carson
William "Bill" Carson, 88, of Oxford, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at the Oxford First Baptist Church with Pastor Glendon Epp officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Born Feb. 14, 1919, on the family farm east of Oxford, he was the son of William and Frances Rowe Carson. Bill farmed and also worked at Boeing for four years. Survivors include his wife, Lola (Green) Carson of the home; son, Bill Carson Jr. and wife, Mary, of Oxford; daughters, Fran Donley and husband, Robert, of Greeley, Colo., and Pam Houk Cofer and husband, Lonnie, of Fairview, Okla.; brother, John Carson, of Oxford; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Carson; sisters, Rosie Johnson and Maggie Tharp; and one grandson.

Donald L. Wacker
Donald L. Wacker, 77, Winfield, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Born Aug. 20, 1930, in Argonia, he was the son of Samuel and Mabel (Meridith) Wacker. He ran his own construction company for 35 years, building over 40 new homes. Survivors include his wife, Connie Wacker; daughter, Donna Homan; two granddaughters; sisters, Wilma Forrest and Joann Wayman. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and five sisters.

Lea Maupin Meyer, 46, longtime Newkirk resident, died Saturday in the Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

James Haven Kerr, A.K.A. "JK"
James Haven Kerr, A.K.A. "JK," 55, Arkansas City, died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at the Trinity Baptist Church, at 1301 South A St., Arkansas City. Pastor James "Babe" Standerfer will officiate. Full military honors will be held in the Veterans Cemetery, Winfield, immediately following services. Cremation has been affected. He was born Jan. 23, 1952, in Arkansas City, the son of Dick and Flavia Kerr, of the Kerr Drug Company. He grew up in Arkansas City, where he attended local schools, graduating from Cowley County Community College. He served a tour in Germany with the U.S. Army. JK spent his entire life in the Arkansas City area. He was employed with the Santa Fe Railroad and was a self-employed landscaper. His hobbies included scuba diving and racing and riding motorcycles. He also enjoyed barbequing for family and friends. He was united in marriage to Pat Watson in Arkansas City. JK was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Arkansas City. Survivors include his wife, Pat; two sons, Jamie Richard Kerr, Watertown, S.D., and Michael Bryan Byers, Sedan; three daughters, Jennifer Odom, Crystal Carpenter and Jerri Stone, all of Arkansas City; a sister, Jean Tidwell, Emporia; eight local grandchildren of the Arkansas City area; two grandchildren, Taylor Mathew Kerr and Dylan Haven Kerr, of South Dakota; five nephews and nieces, Missy Stevens, Wichita, Jennifer Petersen, Knoxville, Tenn., Clint Gottlob, Tulsa, Krissie Wiggins, Fairway, Kan., and Matt Tidwell, Shawnee, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Frank and Zoe Lemert and James and Grace Kerr; and a grandson, Cameron Odom.
